Malaysia Grand Prix 2012, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/20

I don't think anyone on here thinks Vettel is a 'donkey', far from it, but I think there are plenty who are yet to be convinced that he is somehow the world's greatest gift to driving off the back of a season where his car was clearly very very good and allowed him to cruise to a championship unpressured and unchallenged.

Ok, lets forget about last year. That was luck/coincidence, etc.
And last week was again luck and coincidence (with the safety car).
What's the excuse when he won in the Torro Rosso?

Nothing, i've said time and again on this forum that I think his time at Toro Rosso was when he's best demonstrated his abilities, though the many many times i've said such thing goes seemingly unnoticed next to my lack of acknowledgement that he is the undisputed best driver in F1. You seem to tune that out and just focus on anything negative anyone might have to say, much like you've just done with that post.

He completely embarrassed Sebastian Bourdais in that car in 2008 and his win was impressive in the wet at Monza (though Bourdais put his car on 4th on the grid that race too, so the car was clearly very competitive, hardly the mid field runner it is today). I don't think what he has done since then has shown anything deserving of the title of the best driver though. Not necessarily his fault, after all, he can only climb the mountains put in front of him but IMO, those mountains haven't been particularly big just yet. This season is shaping up well to see how he'll manage when he's really fighting amongst the pack.

Here are the speed traps from qualifying:

Mercedes only 2kph faster than the Lotus, clearly enough grunt in the Renault engine.

RBR still favouring downforce rather than matching others for straight line speed, 2nd bottom in a straight line. Could be an Achilles heel in KL's big start/finish DRS straight.

Weren't Merc upset not too long ago that Renault had used the 'catching up' in the engine dept to continue to develop and exploit more power from their unit? Something that F1 had tried to stop by the engine freeze.

Clearly the cheating philosophy of the RBR boys rubbing off on their engine supplier - oops did I say that out loud :)

they need the reliability init bra!
i wouldnt want standardised engines but the regs could be a little less forgiven so people dont claim they need to make changes for reliability when its blatantly a lie

I think the same thing was stated at Monza last year with RBR being relatively slow in a straight line. Didn't seem to hurt them at all though.

RBR were the fastest car last year, Vettel sprinted off from pole nearly every race to get ahead of the DRS window after the opening 2 laps. They do still have very good race pace though.

Besides I said it could be a problem rather than it will be. :p

PDLR outqualifies Karthikeyan by 7 tenths. Not bad for an old man who spent the bulk of the last 6 seasons in testing duties.

Now that HRT have some track time, they might even catch up to Marussia again :p

Just goes to show how good Karthikeyan is tbh, i.e. completely useless :D

Yeah.

Then again, you could put Vettel in the HRT and he wouldn't be able to do anything of note.

It's not as bad as the likes of Andrea Moda though. F1 has seen much worse. The testing restrictions don't exactly help newer teams in that regard either.

Doubt it, it will be very difficult for him compared to vettel who had the benefit of a car fast enough to get pole in reverse with the handbrake on.

it seems he only has to beat his team mate at the moment, the mclaren seems on the next level compared to the rest.

I agree Vettel would be useless in an HRT too.

Try putting Kimi in an HRT and watch him drag it to the front of the grid ;)

It's looking like the real Schumacher is back, fiddling with brake balance between corners was always his party trick. It's a pity the Merc isn't quite there yet, but I won't be surprised to see him podium or even win.

Lewis has returned to qualifying form, and the McLaren seems mighty. Red Bull have some pace to find somewhere, and very interesting tactics from Vettel.

I predict another McLaren 1-2, with Kimi taking 3rd ahead of Vettel in 4th.

Caterham doesn't seem to have much in the way of issues. They're moving forwards. Not as rapidly as they'd like, but the car is showing moments of speed.

It may help if they can stick with a single chassis supplier for more than a year, not chop and change staff/management/locations almost at will and build the car before the first free practice session of the year.

Kind of like all the other teams *except Marussia obviously* do. ;)

Prediction for tommorows result then?

I used my free sky bet last night for Lewis to get pole. Got £9.09 out of that, then used the £9.09 to bet on McLaren as the winning team tommorow.
