Mantle Feedback/Bugs

I'm glad I'm too busy down t'pit to deal with this grief. :D

I'm glad AMD backed themselves into a corner, they would never release anything if the pressure wasn't on. They would just keep delaying and telling us to "hang in there". Now that it's out they will be forced to light a fire under the right people's arses and get it working quickly.

I can see the usual suspects are tearing lumps out of AMD but before we all get to excited this a beta driver on running a brand new api thats bleeding edge. I wouldn't pass judgement until the first WHQL driver is released.

I would love it if AMD could make this compatible with vliw cards it could give my 5770 a new lease of life.

What about this performance Gain? :p Plus the frame rate and I know I not alone on this just feels better. think it fast frame times.

DirectX - 85fps Ultra 1080p no MSAA

Mantle - 120fps Ultra 1080p No MSAA

Horrible result mate :( we didnt play good at all West Brom were all over us.

It was the fog that brought the FPS up :)

Maybe I am being harsh but seriously, stutter and crashing and fogging are unacceptable and for such a hyped up launch. Nice gains but give me 60 fps average and no crashing and I would be far happier. What I don't get is that they have said 7 series is currently unsupported and will see optimizations in a later driver, so is it the fogging giving those gains?

Well, had hoped finally we got some real facts about mantle but the saga continues with questionable IQ and the concerns surrounding it.

SOON we might have some real data!

Might I suggest you set up some ground rules regarding benching? Otherwise the forums is just going to end up with a crapload of trash data. Back to Back Benching on the SAME driver. Not compare new driver using Mantle render path with DirectX results you got 5 driver revisions ago. That helps nobody.

From the limited, flawed, data I have seen so far it appears as if Mantle has little, if any, improvements in performance where CPU constraints are not present. Mantle does appear to shine when a persons CPU is not up to the task though.

As for the Oxide demo, separate thread for that maybe? It's a staged, unrealistic tech demo scenario which cannot reliably produce a stable benchmarking environment.

Most sensible post yet.

Mantle is a massive achievement, to completely replace directx which has evolved over many years is a huge achievement. A bit of fog and some crashing is pretty small compare to what's been achieved.

Also forgot to mention; if mantle gets widely adopted (which is does look like will be the case from the large list of devs), this has a further impact to cheap gaming PCs.

Since the largest gains are in CPU-bound situations, in a mantle game you could potentially have an i3 4130 with an R9 290 running the same as an i7 4770k with an R9 290.

This means if you're just interested in gaming you could 'skimp' on the CPU and focus most of your money into the GPU. And this could also mean AMD based Steamboxes could be more attractive than Nvidia based ones.

So this certainly is good for the consumer indeed.

I should get my 42 year old eyes down to specsavers then :)

But it's not like we being forced to run it? Mantle is there for testing getting involved posting results. etc

For people that just want to play BF4 they can with DirectX.. The results are there and its showing very good.
I dont get any stutter, I do get a crash every odd game like they had couple weeks ago "AppCrash"

And how is Mantle working out for you?

Mines an out of memory crash :D

FPS is massively improved, a bit like buying a 4770K from my i7 920 :p

This and some....

I've spent the whole day comparing (in between the crashes in Mantle mode) and there is no difference in iQ.

Smoothness and FPS? just :D

I've gone back to DX11 for now due to the driver problems.

But using the same settings and it's running like a dog again :D

Aha!

Memory leak then.

I'm getting the same mate, seems like my HDD starts thrashing then it crashes 'Bf4 has stopped working'

Memory leak?

Am I the only one getting crashes with 7970/7970 crossfire?

Matt you couldn't tweet AMD about the issue please mate.

In between the crashing, i've just jumped on a siege of shanghai server 64 players and the lowest FPS I got was 100 (full Ultra, FOV 90 and 4x AA).

Which is pretty awesome considering I couldn't run the game with the Mesh setting on any higher than medium even then my FPS would have dropped to 45 FPS.

Anybody else crashing?

i7 920 @ 4.05.
2 7970s.

I've got big gains but it's crashing all the time.

I am to put simply blown away by Mantle.

I've gained about 50 FPS :D

Exactly the same settings as last night/same clock speeds.

The only issue i've got is all of a sudden my FPS drops to 30 (hitching) but I'm sure it will get fixed with a future driver update.

Edit.

My 7970s are working harder too, the fans are going crazy :)

Edit again,

IT'S BEAUTIFUL

Edit:

I am out but seriously, I wish mantle was doing well but all I see is a failed launch :(

Seriously guys, this is a massive fail of a launch. The one chance AMD get to showcase and they release a fogged/crashing/broken driver for the one game they have had 2 years? to get right. What a let down.

Not sure if serious?

It runs fine, I have used it myself.. Looks great. No crashes for us here.

I don't understand why the negativity.. Mantle is great, and will only get better..

Mantle is ALPHA, not beta, Beta is due March/April time, final is due end of year. But don't let those who insist something has "launched" just so they can tear it down in what we can deem to be the most predictable posts of the year.

Funny because Rroff is supposedly sensible, should know what Alpha is, is buying into the hype and nonsense(can someone point me to the huge "launch" AMD have been hyping... outside of the predicted dates for the Beta and final version to be available?). He also made statements about BF4 not being representative of Mantle... but is now having a go at AMD for doing what..... letting Dev's play around with the Alpha, and there being teething issues with an alpha, really?

The performance advantages are clear as day, the potential for completely different game development route with bottlenecks/overheads removed is showcased very well by Oxide.

Non perfect BF4 patch on an alpha, who could have predicted that.... except absolutely everyone.

It's funny because after months of BS the general consensus say 2 weeks ago from Nvidia and AMD people was... BF4, bit of a joke, Mantle shouldn't be judged on BF4, chances of Dice getting it right out of the gates are sub 2%. But now it's out, these low expectations disappear and we're back to "Mantle was LAUNCHED, it's a failure, doom, apocalypse, boooo".......

Imagine my surprise at this turn of events......

In my eyes this is great..I noticed what i would call a huge increase on my 7990 straight away and it feels very smooth and since these drivers arn't even optimized for the 7000 series i can't wait to see how much better it will get.

At the end of the day this is a FREE performance boost..how can you complain about that in any shape or form? It clearly works and its in Beta right now so its only going to get better.

I don't even play BF4 anymore so i couldn't care less about that game but its nice to see the kind of boost you can get with Mantle and look forward to it in future games that i actually want to play.
