Mantle Feedback/Bugs

In the process of making a benchmark time demo video that we can all copy. Will be ready in an hour or two. Might ask Stulid/Mod/Dons if i should make a new thread as this one has been ruined again i see with the same crap as the other one.
 
I can't believe the childish squabbles i have read on here, i think more of you need to get out more, it's only a graphics card driver :rolleyes:

After this update 14.1 i have had no problems with BF4 up to now, touch wood, i had many before mantle, the game runs and looks sweet now.
 
Personally i dont think a new thread will be any different LT
people have there interpretation and get frustrated when other assume its wrong happens on both sides tbh
 
Good start for an alpha, need to remember this is an entirely new graphics API brought to the table.

I would reserve judgement on performance until we can be sure IQ is identical/better than DX

No but perhaps we can have a Mantle benchmarking BF4 thread and a Mantle user feedback/discussion thread and never the two shall meet. This is supposed to be for benchmark results and i can't see any apart from a few at the start.

I don't want to read through a load of theory and opinions before I get to the useful numbers.
 
Uploading a BF4 time demo that we can all use and copy when benching. Its going to help us get more consistent results i think. Its a very demanding sequence from the single player campaign. It will be ready in about 30 minutes.
 
Morning, again the same plea! :)

Anyone with a 4770k + 290p? if so would you mind doing the following.

Put the CPU and GPU to stock clocks, run Lockers on 64man, Preset ULTRA (4xMSAA etc)

Run around outside up and down from the US side towards the door where the stairwell is and post your findings on FPS? i average around high 50's low 60's here on Mantle and only marginally worse by prob 1 or 2 fps in DX if at all.

Wondering if its my rig thats at fault or if im not getting much out of Mantle on those settings.

The improvements seen in BF4 and Star Swarm look awesome, I can't wait for Mantle to be implemented in an actual game so I can give my R290's a proper workout :D

And lol at people complaining about free software in alpha being buggy :P


The reason for this massive difference between DX9 and Mantle in Star Swarm is explained by Oxide in this video.

Is the D3D render on SS just DX9 or does it have DX11 too? considering you can get around a 20-30% performance boost in a DX9 engine just by rewriting it in DX11 that's a bit naughty of them stacking the deck like that.

Well to be fair it was the Dons who instructed people to bring that crap here when they closed the other one :P
 
HAd a go last night with my 7990 even after reading the issues listed by AMD. I was interested myself as some with Xfire 7 series seemed to be fairing well.

Full clean of drivers with DDU in safemode and drivers installed without error. I had to disable by SPU graphics in device manager because trying to select mantle in OPTIONS in BF4 made BF4 crash. I closed afterburner too.

OK so the game did crash after 20 mins playing with BF4 has stopped working error but this is beta and I understood that 7 series GCN isnt yet supported fully.

Played Siege of shanghai with nearly full 64 player and I can notice the difference. I had no stutter or frame drops as advertised for xfire users. Gameplay was smooth and I scored well. MMy previous averages on SofS was aveargae around 70fps droping to ~50's when busy.

Mantle - Average was a constant +90fps and only dropping to 70's for minimum. I'm running 1920x1200 with 160% Resolution Scaling (1440). All ultra +4xMSAA - motion blur off and post processing low.

Whilst the game did crash it was perfectly playable until then and the difference was noticable not just measurable. Maybe I didn't have long enough before stutter started and because I had shutdown AB I couldnt tell if the issue was reaching VRAM limit to invoke the crash.

Thanks to all those that don't have an AMD card but are posting everything negative they can find around the net in a 'MAntle Benchmarking' thread as their own knowledge. You don't own an AMD card and consequently cannot use mantle and really apart from reading the thread to find out what AMD users are experiencing, bring nothing useful from the thread. We know what the issues are in the beta - thanks.

All Mantle eligible users can always switch back to Direct X. We have the best of both worlds.
 
I will play some more games today but.
I had only one crash on mantle last night. With all this alt tab out and stuff going off.
Once in 10 minutes i get 1s cpu spike. Does not bother me.

CPU temperature is 10c lower than b4 and that is veeeery good thing for semi stable 5ghz. On DX11 it does crash more as temperatures are in 69c range.

Gpu still stays around 52-54c.


I just hope more games will support it. I hope them games will have 3D option since There is where Mantle should shine ---> 3D gaming

I dunno about bug free but um CUDA, the various game work libraries, even PhysX are pretty robust and were so from beta releases onwards - albeit PhysX isn't their original work, you can also probably throw 3D Vision/W&B, OptiX, etc. APIs in there.

While some of those aren't rendering APIs in the vein of mantle, you can compare stuff like game works and their open gl extensions which are generally pretty much working out the box without major issues.

Physx is garbage, you are "concerned" about Mantle and any potential performance issues it may create, then you say Physx is a"good api," even though it usually causes large performance and lag spikes in every game its in.
 
Not really a good point to bring up as nVidia have a good track record with developing APIs in general and some of them are as ground breaking for rendering as Mantle just in different ways (i.e. look at some of the videos about game works especially stuff like OptiX).

Yes but nVidia would charge you extra to use any new API these days, or require you to buy the very latest HW. nVidia is FAR from a perfect example for flawless releases (look at tegra 4, it has been almost a non launch)

Anyone complaining or saying "I told you so" without both :-

A) Looking at this as an playable alpha/beta launch
B) Actually trying BF4 or Swarm for yourself

Should not really be commenting on how well mantle is working ;)

Iv tested BF4 on my 8350 + R9 290 and it feels a lot smoother (probably less dips in FPS) But i will try get some numbers later :D (I got distracted by KSP)
 
I don't have BF4 but from the posts I am reading it's a mixed bag.

+Definite average FPS boost
+Better frametimes
+Higher minimums

-Fogging
-Stutters
-Crashing

So it looks like more work is required on what is already a beta. Dice have acknowledged the fogging is a bug, but the rest is going to be down to AMD I think.

From my perspective Mantle as a proof of concept has been a success. Not resounding or flawless of course, but a success none the less.
 
The game crashes just after the map loading splash screen for me on my 7990, any ideas on how to fix it?

I have installed the AMD beta drivers and the BF4 Mantle patch and while I can play the game, if I attempt to access the game settings, the client crashes. Gone back to DX for now, too much hassle.
