Mantle Feedback/Bugs

I found that by tweaking some settings - frame pacing off, ulps off I got a very smooth and crash free crossfire experience on Guilin - my fab map. No stutter. Though I've yet to check if these tweaks did anything in shanghai.

Once a few things have been ironed out these will be great. Looking forward to failing my CPU clock back a bit as well

Intrigued by the smoothing, is it an overall game smoothness or the effect of higher minimums?

I don't recall smoothing being something talked about much either? Strange as I would take smooth frames over high ones all day long.

When I had a quick go I really didn't notice it to be crazy smooth or anything (but I don't play much BF4 so I dunno :D). But I'm guessing the more consistent framerate and lower ms frame rendering would make the game feel somewhat smoother for someone who has played a lot of DX with the odd frame hiccup every few minutes.

played it as soon as the driver came out, very impressed, very smooth and better all round frame rates.

Then went on before bed, it took me 4 attempts to even get into the game, when i did it was at 30 fps and the gun was hovering infront of my FOV like the arm was missing, very strange, didnt have time to investigate so hopefully whwn i get back home all will be fixed again :D

on 8350 and 290 x

It feels very different but in a good way. It's like I have higher mouse dpi. They us defo something going on on the frame timing and I can't wait for it to be tested.

I saw the fogging, but didn't notice any stutter or any out of the ordinary (for BF4 crashes). What GFX card you running it with ? and is it crossfire ?

As I said in my post I don't have BF4. My card is an R9 290X.

The point I am making is that these are issues that are reported by a lot of people. The fact that some don't get the problem is a sign that it can and will be fixed.

The AMD 14.1 drivers page does state that older drivers MUST be uninstalled prior to 14.1 installation. They do also state they are BETA and even give a long list of Known Issues,

Known Issues (among others). I selected only the issues which seem to crop up here with regularity as proof that Mantle is a failure.

  • Mantle performance for the AMD Radeon™ HD 7000/HD 8000 Series GPUs and AMD Radeon™ R9 280X and R9 270X GPUs will be optimized for BattleField 4™ in future AMD Catalyst™ releases. These products will see limited gains in BattleField 4™ and AMD is currently investigating optimizations for them.
  • Intermittent stuttering or stability issues may occur when utilizing Mantle with AMD CrossFire™ technology in BattleField 4™ - AMD recommends using the DirectX code path when playing Battlefield 4 with multiple GPUs. A future AMD Catalyst release will resolve these issues.
  • AMD testing for the AMD Catalyst™ 14.1 Beta Mantle driver has been concentrated on the following products: AMD Radeon™ R9 290X, R9 290, R9 280, R9 270, R7 260X, R7 260, HD 7000 Series, HD 8000 Series, A10-7850K and A10-7700K. Future AMD Catalyst™ releases will include full test coverage for all AMD products supported by Mantle.
  • Graphics hardware in the AMD A10-7850K and A10-7700K may override the presence of a discrete GPU under the Mantle code path in Battlefield 4™

Mantle works better for me than DX.
The main issue is cpu spikes but I take Mantle any day over DX for my machine.
smoother, better hitbox reg less bubble effect.

BF4 is crap but Mantle works.

For me the mantle drivers are an odd thing, in Starswarm demo i get clear gains, in BF4 i get zero gains, so to me it says the BF4 side of things something is amiss, not sure if its settings or what but somethings not right.

Dat placebo :p.

I'd say it's probably just higher minimum FPS. Or more consistent FPS giving the feeling of it being smoother.

Just look at the gpu rendering line. Then you'll know why we say its like playing a different game.

Rusty, have a look at some videos of BF4 on Mantle with the overlays, you will see what people are saying about smooth, under DX the graphs show spikes all over the shop, high and low, under Mantle the spikes are a lot smaller both high and low, effectively the game runs smoother

I have installed the AMD beta drivers and the BF4 Mantle patch and while I can play the game, if I attempt to access the game settings, the client crashes. Gone back to DX for now, too much hassle.

Disable your CPU graphics via control panel and then you can get at Mantle. Had same problem with my 7990.

it behaves like a dog using my Crossfire setup, stuttering all over the place.

Mantle in BF4 not for me at the moment, certainly not liking the Crossfire 7950's. I'm not that bothered really, I don't call getting between 90fps and 150fps using 130% res scale and 4xmsaa on BF4 a big problem that makes Mantle a must have over D3D.

BF4 is 100% running nicer for me. Or at least I think so. I'm on 7970/7950 crossfire and do get the odd stutter though to be fair.

I'd run a fraps benchmark to see fps differences but I can't load the game with fraps running, crashes right away.

Matt, any chance you can update the op with BF 4 console commands?

I have the overlay and csv one, what about the screenshot one and the fps counter.

When I tried the mantle API I found that I had lower minimums in the FPS down to 43 at times, whereas with DX it never drops below 70 as a minimum with everything turned up.
Will give it another whirl but although I do get higher FPS at times, the spikes and the lower Minimums means I will most likely wait for the non betas.

oh and then there is the extra `fog` which I know they have acknowledged as a bug.

Sure.

FPS Monitor type - PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1

Cpu+Gpu performance overlay type - PerfOverlay.DrawGraph 1

To take a screenshot type - Render.Screenshot

To enable a FPS log type at start of bench - PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable 1

To stop FPS log at end of bench type - PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable 0

A little tip. Whilst the level/map is loading you can type in PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable 0 and press enter. Then when you need to start logging just bring up the console, press down arrow key on your keyboard or S and that last written command comes up. Saves you retyping it each time. Just change the 0 to 1 and hit enter to start recording.
