****MASS EFFECT : ANDROMEDA****

Didn't they say that Shepherd WOULDN'T be the main character in the new series? Glad they're using Femshep though. I have no idea who that dude they insisted on putting on the cover is!

I'm guessing we'll start ME:Andromeda with Sheperds farewell message ringing in our ears, as for who the main character in the new series is going to be, I can't make out the name on the dog tag, but there's loads of speculation on BSN that is says "Ryder", which would kinda tie in with the music used in the first ME:A teaser trailer back in June ( Johnny Cash - Ghost riders in the sky ).

Very good little trailer.

The theme of ME:A is exactly what I'm looking forward to - exploration, curiosity, expanding our horizons, the wonder of space.

Much better than the dull/monotone war story of ME3 and daddy issues/superfluous characters of ME2.

Bloody annoyed at the insistence on using a new plot, but I suppose there were too many variables after ME3 to continue the story as it was without the cop-out indoctrination theory, which would annoy a lot of people as their "decisions would not have had any consequence". It's a no-win scenario.

I got the "perfect" ME3 ending though so pardon me for being aggrieved at hearing that gasp and thinking I'd get some closure...

Would love to see that theme pulled off properly.

No game has ever pulled me in like me1. Everything about it was pure perfection to me, sadly that epic sense of exploration coupled with the rpg decisions and loot finding had completely vanished for me in me2 and me3.

Maybe Conrad will be lead character in me4 lol.

They probably tried to keep the series going by making it more mainstream, no? ME2 and ME3 both felt like rail shooters to me. ME1 is the only game that I was was more than happy to pay for all the DLCs that came out for it because it actually added more to the richness of the story.

Me too - I really want things to go back to the way ME1 felt. Landing on that first planet felt, well, haunting. More of that please.

ME1 had a feeling of being right on the edge of something, ME2/3 just didn't have the same feel.

I agree with you lot on ME1.

Ok sure there were "arcadey" mechanics (scanning, unlocking things and so on), but that can be accepted given it was an xbox 360 exclusive for 6 months on release. And yes some of the game design for things like uncharted worlds could be refined (those 89* mountain slopes... :D) but I can accept the slightly clunky mechanics for being the first in the series.

ME2 had an appalling main story led by a pantomime villain (Harbinger), stupid things like "Mission Complete" screens (my god those were awful), loading screens instead of elevators, almost entirely a corridor shooter, the introduction of bulky armour ruining that sleek retro futuristic theme of ME1, closer "over the shoulder camera" to aid in shooting (forcing our vision down the crosshairs), the split between "non-combat zones" and "combat zones" adding to the corridor shooter feel as well as not being able to holster your weapon. It totally devolved into style over substance.

I find it funny when ME2 is praised as being the best because people tend to forget the huge negative outcry and criticism from the playerbase on release at what Bioware/EA had done with the game given the expectations from ME1. I think it took several months to settle down. The whole Bladerunner vibe was lost and replaced by a Halo style.

In my opinion ME2 is the worst game of the three and the weak link because of the jarring change in style and lack of substance. It's only saving graces were that the combat mechanics were actually very good and fun to play, and the creation of some of the best characters in the series (Mordin, Legion).

The entire main story of ME2 was a waste of time and left too many unfinished plot points for ME3 to be able to wrap up decently in one game. They could have easily merged and reduced some of the characters and focused more on progressing and adding depth to the reaper plot rather than running errands and solving daddy issues the entire game, most of which didn't add much to a broader understanding of the game universe and cultures anyway.

And so ME3 ended up feeling rushed for things like the Krogan situation, the Crucible (wtf DEM device...), Rachni, and so on, nevermind that being a war story painted in one colour (thematically) it was pretty tedious. Despite having bought the DLC for ME3, I can't force myself to play through that game again because of this.

In the end I only played ME3 for the multiplayer, which is pretty damn good.

I don't hold out much hope for it being anything like ME1 - seeing as this is going to be another EA cash cow I think we all know deep down what we are going to get, just look at what happened to the Battlefield series and Medal of Honour lol

And the new Star Wars Battlefront - they are not interested in making deep open world games. They prefer easy access blockbusters on rails for the masses.

Ashe (Lady Insanity) has done a good break down of the trailer with some tantalising theories about how the plots will be linked rather than broken...

The evolution of Dragon Age to the Frostbite Engine brought massive expansion to the playable area and therefore exploration. I have no doubt that ME:ANDROMEDA will offer the same if not more!!!

I loved wandering across unknown planets in my trusty if not always well behaved MAKO!!:o:D

Isn't GTA a deep open world game? I'm pretty sure that sold rather well.

Bit of a factoid. The first US man in space was Alan Shepherd. The first US woman in space was Sally Ride.

Yes it is but ME1 isn't looking good these days, it's got to be nearly ten years old. ME2 doesn't look too bad and ME3 better but still suffers from some very poor textures. Anyway you're not playing them for thee looks. ME1 is quite a stats heavy RPG, ME2 less so and ME3 even less than that.

This is where the 4k texture packs come in.

Agree. Mass Effect 1 and KOTOR are my favorite games of all time
