May be in trouble at work

No you wont get fired, but don't expect them to offer you any extra shifts or give you the nice shifts in future, i personally would take a pee in the coffee machine and leave.

Thats how I left my job in a wetherspoons pub, but the coffee machine was the ice machine :D

I'd have just done it and if its something that is a regular occurence, speak to your manager and explain that you are always working an extra "x amount of hours' can you [be paid overtime]/[have a day in leu]/[have the hours ammended] etc..

This will also show the manager that cleaning up the store is obviously not being started early enough and therfore he/she needs to talk to the supervisor/sub-manager to get things changed. That way, you look like a good employee and may get paid for the work you have done.

so what time did everyone end up leaving? 8:15pm? you will probably get a warning. It may affect your relationship with fellow colleagues, assuming you like them anyway. lol

let us know your fate. :P

He has already said when asked he did the work. It is when the manager is a moron he refuses to work over, and rightly so imo.

I'm totally going to get fired aren't I? :( I know I probably can't get fired for this but they'll most likely pin something else on me, that the way it works isn't it?

Unfortunately it is the way some establishments work, the way you have portrayed the situation suggests there is no "team spirit" and if you have put your manager in an awkward position you can bet money they will drop you in it to save their own neck.

However I'd like to think if they do not sack you on the spot, there will be an opportunity for you to at least express your dis-satisfaction in the way it was handled and you can grovel as much as you dare if you want to keep the job, only you will know the best way to deal with the persons and circumstances.

Been there, done it myself in the past. it's a personal choice ultimately how much you value the job. It's always easier to move from one job to another than finding a decent one if unemployed in my experience.

heh. I have worked for a supermarket and a couple or retail stores. A couple of them tried to make me stay after to do other peoples work etc. I normally clean, make things are tidy as I am doing something so I'm always finished ahead of time. I had to catch a bus and there have been a couple of times I have missed it because they have made me stay 10 minutes later, then I need to run to get my stuff from the changing rooms etc. One time I had to wait 3 hours for the next bus. Was not fun.

Anyway I learnt from that. All they are trying to do is cash in on some free work from you. There is no "being a team player" in the retail industry. At the end of the day if you know you have done your job and done it right then when the shop clock hits 8:00, get your ass out of there. It's what I do now. Sure doesn't win you any awards or put you in your managers good books but it's a crappy retail job. The only reason you're doing it is for money I assume?

They can't fire you for it so don't even worry about it.

Ah Sla..Student labour abuse!

- You did not have to work past your contract if you did not agree the extra time
- You clearly showed you are not part of a team and just want to get your money and do your job, which means they probably will be happy to see you leave/make your life hell (if they have that sort of attitude)
- The fact the doors were locked and you had no way of unlocking them is illegal, unless the fire escape was readily available but even then it was an unneccesary move by the company.

Imo, you are both in the wrong. The company for not agreeing the time and locking the doors and you for not doing the work and letting your co-workers do it instead, either way you were in there until the doors were unlocked so should have made use of the time.

You won't be in trouble if you understand your contract but I am sure there will be some words of disappointment.

When I used to work in retail this did niggle me a little, I was only part time 1.30pm - 5.30pm. The shop would shut at 5.30pm and you would try and do as much end of day stuff before closing that you could, but of course you can't do emptying of tills etc till your closed, so you wouldn't leave till 5.45 or 5.50pm fair enough, but you would only get paid till 5.30pm.

It can seem churlish to moan about 15 minutes but when its every day and you're only being paid minimum wage for 4 hours (from a corporation making massive profits), its a fair chunk of your time that your working for nothing. 3/4 of a month each year unpaid I think I worked it out once.

I was always happy to work paid overtime, even at very short notice but just thought it was taking the mickey a bit expecting me to do so every day unpaid. The job was advertised as 20 hours a week but was in fact 21.5 or more hours a week, so either pay 21.5hrs or tell me to come in at 1.45 each day.

so you punished the customers because you where ****** off with your job?

Yeah, I can see this being blown up to an actual matter. I would move to a different job but every job is the same really. I really have lost hope :(

You're a student, you just have to do things that may seem unfair sometimes. You could easily argue workers rights, health and safety, etc but would it be the correct move?

No need to lose hope you won't be there forever, student jobs are nothing but a small element in the bridge to success :)

They used to do this in the supermarket I worked in. Doors close at 10pm and you get paid until 10pm. However if 10 people came in at 1 min to 10 you would ahve to wait and serve them all before being let out. I think it's a disgrace because your essentially working extra time every day for free. 10 minutes may not be a lot but over the course of a year for a 5 days a week job it adds up to 43 hours unpaid work.

Luckily I worked day shift most of the time though so as soon as 5pm came I was out the door like a flash :)

so you punished the customers because you where ****** off with your job?

Yeah, mainly due to the amount of abuse I got off those "customers" for the year I worked there.

Also I wasn't ****** off with my job, I like working in bars.

even I'm saying thats not a good attitude :p Customers are individuals.

Meh I dont care :D also if you saw the state of the ice machine what I did probably cleaned it, I was there for a yr and only saw it get cleaned once, that was when it broke.

And reading this thread explains exactly why many employers/managers are harsh, or seem that way, some of the attitudes expressed are pretty bad.

Am I one of the few who understands that employment is a two way street, and if you treat your mangement/job like crap, they'll return the favour, but likewise if you work with them, everything will be much better all around...

And if it isn't, then get a better job.

I hate supervisors! I have two supervisors, which contradict each other a lot also they are big fat ugly women, who think they are better than me, because I'm still in education :(
