Mechwarrior Online. Yes, really :)

sounds interesting - how obvious is it youre in a different mech or are you just buying loadouts with prettier cases? Is there much to do or is just DM?

Very, I've been using the light one with jet packs and its fun for out manoeuvring the big mechs that take a lot of hits but obviously if you take a bad hit you can die quickly.

Got sent an email this morning from them :

"Your receiving this email because we made a piloting error. You have just recently received an email that was meant to go out to only all our great Closed Beta testers. So we really apologize for making this mistake and hope you will forgive us.

In order to help with that forgiveness, we have decided to grant you beta access as of this email!

Please enjoy the game and help us make an even better product as Closed Beta continues, as after we have fixed our error we are closing the door again.

We look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!"

I don't recall getting any emails from them, anyone else get this?

Either way, downloading now :)

I got that email aswell, downloading now :)

Never played a mechwarrior game before so not sure what to expect, although from what I've seen its a awesome series of games.

I got a prior email saying I had recently been accepted into the closed beta. Oh well looks this is now a "closed open" beta.

MechWarrior Online MWOMercs

So the NDA was lifted today meaning anyone in the MWO beta can freely talk about it and post pics (which I will do later).

It is still in closed beta so it's a bit rough round the edges and not all the features are in yet, but so far it's shaping up pretty well.

It's launching as free to play, however they are currently doing founders packs that come with premium time, in game money and none, 1 or 4 mechs that come with a lifetime 25% cbill (in game money) bonus every match.

The "grind" is a little harsh on starting non-paying players, but to be honest at <$10 a month you'd have to be crazy not to buy premium time.
You can also buy mechs and new mech bays with real money to avoid some of the grind if you choose to, but XP is only gained by playing (which again is quicker with a premium account).

Unlike many previous mechwarrior games, they are working hard to make sure each class has a role in the game, rather than just bigger is better. Which can be attested to by how many times my atlas has been cored from behind by a Jenner.

Don't get me wrong, there is still a hell of a lot of work to be done on this title before full release, but it's also very enjoyable in it's current state... they are being pretty free with beta invites recently and you can always pay $30-120 to get access to the beta if you want to get in quickly.

Imo the $60 pack is the best value as you get 2 months premium, a mech and $80 of in game money which totals about $120 of value if you were to buy the same when the game goes live. $80 of in game money is enough to buy a year of premium, or a boat load of mechs of different sizes (only maybe 4-6 of the biggest by the time you customise them).

Surprisingly the most sold pack is actually the $120 one, which includes 4 mechs all with the 25% lifetime cbill bonus, and your name in the credits.

Anyone else playing the beta?

I played it pretty playable on a q6600 at 3.2ghz with a 460 ti 1gb. It did help a little with the 460 being overclocked to 800mhz tho but still nice without it being oc.

There is probably 1 setting or 2 that if lowered a little would help fps a bit, like aa or shadows or somit but i cant recall if i needed to do that.

About the game, if indeed the nda is lifted now.

The front end of the UI when the game starts is very confusing to get even started in a match. Took me awhile to figure what things were and even now i still dunno really how to config mechs, what i need what i dont need and all the stats are hard to get to in a easy manor.

The battles are nice enough but make sure you group your weapons so you dont fire em all at once otherwise you will be like me and overheat after every 3rd shot or somit. The arrow keys and i think right ctrl is how u do it when ur playing.

Imo the ui and the menus etc need a total redesign to be more friendly. Their isnt a lot of stuff to do so its pretty early beta which i hope their is still a heck of a lot more to come and is no where near finished.

I know it's early days, but so far I have to confess a slight case of regret that I bought the top Founders package without having played the game first.

I'm a big fan of the Mechwarrior series and really thought that MWO would blow me away, but so far it just hasn't been as much fun as I'd hoped.

It's still very early days though; I can see that the game has potential, I just hope that as it becomes more polished something "clicks" and it offers the experience that I'm looking for.

Agreed, to say it is clumsy would be being generous; it's a mess and not intuitive even for players with both previous MMO and Mechwarrior experience.

As you said, it needs to be totally redesigned or they will lose a lot of free-to-play customers who download the game just to try it out and become frustrated and the level of knowledge required just to get a match started.

Enjoying this more and more, really getting used to the Jenner now too which is a lot of fun.

Needs a good team who stick together and flank or use a bit of tactics.

So will this have new made up mechs or the same original mechs from the earlier games, like the Timberwolf and Mad Dog etc?

Some old like Atlas, Awesome and hunchback. Some new like the Jenner and dragon and i think a few more mechs to come too.

It doesnt have any of the clan mechs like what you have mentioned above due to the time setting in the battletech universe. They will come but not any time soon. At the moment its only inner sphere mechs

To the MechWarrior™ Online® Community:

We are pleased to announce the latest engine drop of CryENGINE 3.4.1. This was a large undertaking and has helped us address many of the game’s issues and bump up performance and rendering capabilities.

What does this mean to you? The game looks significantly better. All of the maps have had their lighting tuned and you’ll now see a lot more detail in the environment. Minimum spec PC players should notice a fairly good improvement in performance with tuning still on-going and will be coming down the pipe as we optimize the game on our way to Open Beta.

DirectX 11 and 3D Vision support are currently disabled while we resolve the remaining few issues. These will come on-line in an upcoming patch.

We have also taken this opportunity to add some new pathing in River City for you to explore which adds some more gameplay strategies when approaching enemy bases.
