Medieval 2 total war thread

I plan to leave at least a half stack in each frontier city. Going to be a slow methodical conquest of middle eart...err... Europe :D

I am impressed with how good archers and longbow men are when defending a city. When I took Caernarfon I lost nearly 2/3rds of my army because they had about 100 longbowmen on their walls. Madness. They paid for it dearly though :p

Argh i've now been dragged into a massive war which is wearing me down. Basically Me(Scotland) against Denmark, Hungary and Spain.

Denmark is tiny as I wiped most of them out but dammit this war is lasting ages and it's getting expensive.

You ought to try and get a ceasefire with some of your enemies. It can be tough fighting one enemy, let alone several!

Ceasefire probably wont last long but perhaps long enough for you to get some reinforcements and/or fortify your cities.

Muahaha France is going down the toilet!

Milan decided they wanted Paris, so I attacked Angers. That was a tough battle! Full blown castle and I didn't have many units that could scale walls. Didn't fancy moving my ram forward as most of their troops were archers.

After my longbowmen had ran out of ammo I sent them up the ladders with a few other stuff. Sent the ram in while everyone was distracted and stormed the castle with 240 Mailed Knight :D

Just a few more cities and the French will be gone. I currently control Bordeux, Angers, Antwerp, Brouges [sp?], Rennes, Caen, all the UK and I will be turning my attention to the Danish next - they only have 4 regions so shouldn't take long to bump them off!

I had a Pope from England too! Woo! Annoyingly he got bumped off or something after a couple of turns. The new Pope has sent the bloody Inquisition, I have one roaming around Scotland and another lurking near Caen - the git has taken out THREE diplomats and I can't recruit any Assassins.... what do I need to make them available? Shame I can't just send a general to chop his legs off. Are units safe within cities?

Underestimate the Danish at your peril. You might look at their army listing and think - I'll just throw in a couple of cavalry charges (they're very infantry-heavy) but once those infantry get stuck in, they're a nightmare to rout - and they'll cut your infantry into itty-bitty pieces. Some of my most epic battles have been against the Danes...

Guys need help here, you know when you recruit a merchant, how do you pick up those raw resources on the map like wool etc?

And how the hell do you actually earn tons of money, Im always broke due to upgrades n stuff Lol

Hover over a resource when the merchant is selected until you see 'worth x florins' in the tooltip, then just right click.

Focus on ports, markets and trade improvement buildings, get trade rights, use the free upkeep militia as much as possible. Taking over other merchants ususally nets 1 or 2k as a lump sum. I wouldn't recommend being too aggressive financially in diplomacy, it just annoys other nations.

for assasins

i use the following:
mass produce assasint.. about 5-10, then sent them to surround a rebel stack..
have each assasint take turn trying to assasinate the captain.. expect to lose a couple before they gain points.. after that.. keep on assasinating the captains till they get 4-5 points before moving on to diplomats and low level princesses to get them to 6-7.. after that consolidate the retinues until you get 1-2 at max level..

be prepared for plenty of losses..

for sieges i prefer to let *** comp do the assault as they somehow manage to win a battle with only 10 losses against an enemy of 350.. no idea how

Right... so I have to buy ports, I chose spain lol. They should remove that bloody fog tbh, when they gave me a mission saying to take over Bordeaux, I actually moved the wrong way, but luckily I made it back in time with 3 turns left.

And when I highlighted the merchant, I tried right clicking on the raw materials, but still unable to gather it.

I'm having a fantastic campaign as the Egyptians - I'm at 1350 (ish) and have just ceased fire with the Moors after a hundred year war! It was their idea too - just to prove that diplomacy does work to a degree.

I'm not doing too bad considering I'm struggling with the old finances somewhat - unfortunately due to an incredibly long and expensive war with Turkey I have got citadels and castles to protect my northern flanks - which dont bring in much income. They are certainly keeping the pressure on however, laying seige to one or the other from time to time. I am also fighting the Sicilians and have Parma ( I think it is?) as a strong citadel that keeps pumping out good quality troops. Interestingly Parma is a swordsmans master guild so I get certain bonuses now - worth keeping on to at any cost!

I love the heavy armourers and buildings that offer the armour upgrades they are superb! The graphics are excellent especially in the battle, I can now tell which unit has the best armour by looks alone.

Just leave the merchant there and he will make money each turn (until he dies or a rival takes over his business). If you double click on him, it will say on his page something like "Trading gold, making 20 florins a turn" or something similar.

He can also be moved off his square by armies and other agents, so check him often if he is in a busy area of the map.

I see I see, thanks a lot Lol, I thought my fat bloke was just standing there and doing nothing, *** a waste of 550 gold ;p

Damn those French! They only have Tolouse left and TWO assaults have failed. They had bloody catapults which scare the crap out of my units. You know things aren't going well when half your army routes within a few minutes of starting the battle :(

So far the Danes haven't been much in the way of challenging. They tried to assault Antwerp for a second time, and I had only 4 under-manned units of spearmen... not a single Danish soldier made it into the city :D

Then after all their infantry routed the Danish only had a unit of Mailed Knights... I just waited them out, won the battle then sent in a full stack to mop up!

Starting to struggle with money now. I want to stand down some of my military but I have towns rioting all over the show and I do not trust the Danes and the French even though we have ceasefires. So far I have had to stop all building and recruiting just so I can get back in the black. Sent out a few diplomats to the middle east regions to get some more trading rights agreements.

Got my first assassin earlier and he managed to bump off an Inquisitor. Since I lost a few diplomats the Inquisitors have been doing me a favour by taking out a bunch of Heretics that sprung up around southern France.

The computer seems to do that a lot, it happened to me vs france also. And just happened to me (Sicily) against the Moors, pushed them back to Marakesh and they threw 3 small armies of siege equipment at me. I beat them but took some real punishment, even with my cavalry heavy army.

Just went to the far far south west of northern africa also, I had to go way east, then south, then west again, circling the desert there thats impassable. Damn! Theres a lot of trade to be had there, found 4 ivory a gold mine and a small rebel village with port access from the west of africa, each of the ivory is bringing me in 50 florins per turn with no roads and bad merchants, once I start getting setup there with mines and paved roads the money is gonna start piling in.

OOooh, I have an alliance with the Moors, the Spanish and the Portugese, so I could probably send quite a few Merchants into Africa.

Fog of war is getting on my nerves at the moment as I don't what the lay of the land to the east is like - I have only just bumped into Russia! Having a mooch around there to see if there are any rebel cities to be nicked :D

Only worry I have about pushing east is bumping into the Mongols. So far I haven't had contact and I am not eager for it to happen either!

Not been able to play for days - getting twitchy ;)
And tonight I'll barely have a chance either.

Bah humbug! I'd just squashed the French too, playing as the HRE. I't gonne be a teary moment when I crush England into the dirt, but you gotta do what you gotta do :D
