Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

Probably about as liked on here as on Reddit but swapped my C class estate 220d for CLA 220d yesterday much to the missus disappointment! Ive got to say the new 2L diesel and the 8 speed auto is a major improvement, the lighter car also probably make it feel so much nippier, sport mode now makes it feel sporty have yet to give it a big push as ive been driving on the M25 to work, first drive home i got 70mpg so im happy with the diesel choice rather than the 250 (would have got the 220 4-matic but it wasn't on the list)
The seats are pretty bad and Mbux is taking some getting used to, im not regretting it yet, its just a shame the that i couldn't get another C Class (i could have but such a **** spec and engine for the cost of a prem plus CLA)

I love the car but the dealerships really are proving to be first rate clowns.

It's because you've got a relatively new one. Go in with a ten year old one like I used to and they don't bother trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

The majority of their customers wouldn't question it like you did so it's an easy way to make money. Same in any customer facing business.

Collected my 2017 E220d AMG Line Premium Plus Estate this week. Had a 5 hour drive home from Stevenage, really pleased with it. The Driving Assistance Plus Package is absolutely brilliant. 5 minutes in stop-start traffic on the M6 is plenty for it to show its worth. The salesman said hardly anyone specs it because of the cost but I'd have it way before any of the other options. Fortunately this car has most of the other options too :) Remote Parking Assistance is of questionable use in reality but it's great fun for messing around with - you can move the car into a parallel park, bay, or move it straight forwards and back stood outside the car with your phone.

Could you sort the pic?

I've got the driving assistance plus in my S213 and agree it's superb. On good roads you can go for miles with just the occasional nudge of the steering wheel with your knee.

Interesting experience today as my C43 went in for it's first MOT with the local dealer (there's my first mistake - why didn't I just take it to a council testing station like I usually would?!)

Snip......

Did they log the failure on the MOT system ? That would annoy me if they had as a lot of buyers will check the history if selling the car privately. If they have I would put a complaint in.

Very good point. Yes, it was logged. I have a copy of the "fail" certificate. I'll be logging a formal complaint with MBUK anyway but thanks for pointing that one out.

Brakes are an easy one to go after. People rarely challenge it and it's difficult to know whether there is a problem so you have to trust the word of the dealer. After all, safety is important!

Out of curiosity what did they put down as the failure reason ?

Folks, does anyone know what kind of price range would one off 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year services cost a C300?
Trying to weigh up service plan vs going in ad hoc.

Your advise would be appreciated, thanks folks.

I don't know but there is a pricing list for servicing on the mercedes site somewhere as i bumped into it a while back whilst wondering how much it was to service mine

If you are buying a service plan, they normally do a decent black Friday if you are buying a main dealer service pack. I think we got £150 knocked off, still a complete and utter rip off however, being a main dealer.

Today I noticed that my SatNav was being really optimistic with timings, so whilst sat in traffic not moving for ages I took a look at the settings to see if I had disabled something somewhere. Turns out that my TomTom traffic requires a new subscription. I have looked online and its £50 for a year which is fine by me, but then further searches online show that it can be a nightmare to actually have updated and for many it takes phone calls to Mercedes to put right.

Has anyone got any experience in this process? It seems pretty clear to me, but would like to know before I start.

Have a look at the published pricing. Worth thinking about how long your planning on keeping it and see if it makes sense eg. A big (B) service then A then B might be good value but perhaps not so much if you're having a A, B, A. Also check if there is anything else that is need to be done as part of the service eg. For my C63 it needed a transmission fluid change at 30,000 miles. This costs £400 but is included in a service plan if active when it goes in at the following service.

Folks, what am I doing wrong? It seems that every time I do something inside my car without the engine running I always come out to a flat battery the next morning. It's done it twice to me now almost exactly 1 year apart.

The first time I was vacuuming out the car the night before a road trip. I spent maybe 30mins - 1hr removing kids car seats and generally cleaning the interior of the car. The next morning the car wouldn't start, jumped it and it was fine. It's keyless go so I assumed I'd knocked the ignition when I was vacuuming or hadn't shut a door properly.

Jump to last night. I had bought some new side marker lights to replace the awful orange things that US law requires and some interior LED lights. I needed to turn the wheels to try and fit these side lights. This is what I did:

1. Get in car
2. Turn on ignition to position 2 (push button twice) to see if it turned on the power steering pump
3. That didn’t work so I started the engine
4. Turned the wheels full lock
5. Turned engine off (was running for 5-10secs)
6. Couldn’t get my hand in to get the lights off
7. Jacked car up a bit
8. Decided that messing around with stuff like this at 10pm was a bad idea so lowered the car back down
9. Went around and fitted interior lights everywhere. Opening doors turned the lights on so didn’t need the ignition on
10. Closed all doors
11. Went to bed

I came out this morning to a dead battery. Nothing was left on in the car when I closed it all up, I even made sure because I didn't want to come out to a dead battery.

When I say dead it had enough juice to turn on interior bits and pieces but not enough to start the engine, it just clicked. Oh, it had enough to blow the horn non-stop too which was a nice addition to my problem just what I need at 7am...

Anyway, is there some sort of occupancy sensor that could be duff? Am I not turning off the ignition correctly (press the button 3 times to turn everything off)? When you open a door you can hear what sounds like all the suspension system (Airmatic) starting up so I can only think that something isn't shutting back off again with that system.

I dont know what era your car is, but i have had a fair few Mercs, including a couple (R230s) with Keyless locking/go.

The only possible thing that you could be doing wrong on a user level is not locking it? The R230 you lock either on the button on the handle, or on the key fob, but you do need to lock it, just walking away will leave the car unlocked (and presumably still powered).

Sorry, that would probably be helpful information - it's a 2012 CLS550 (W218).

It could be that but it's parked in my garage so it's never locked. Maybe going back to it after it's been parked unlocked for a while makes it behave differently, I don't know.

I'm looking for opinions on a C43 - specifically an estate.

I've got a shortlist of M340i touring, S4 Avant and the C43 Estate (And a Macan as a wild card because Porsche)

Good and bad opinions welcome. MPG or the lack thereof :)

I prefer the looks of the BM, the interior of the Audi and the noise of the Merc. :)

Collected a new GLA 200 AMG on Monday. Had a great deal on the lease, however i was a little shocked at the quality of the interior (lots of plastic). I returned a 67 plate Audi A4 S line, that was far superior.

The P11d book price on this GLA was £39,000. I was a little sad it does not come with electric mirrors, or even sensor wipers. The entertainment system is also shocking, its majorly outdated. Can anyone confirm how you get the bluetooth to sync my phone contacts etc. The only way i can get my contact up is for me to plug in the supplied USB.

The GLA is an A class based SUV which is now a generation behind the current A Class. It is obviously not going to be as nice inside as a current model Audi A4.

The lease was a good deal for a reason. It's a life expired dinosaur.

Love mine, don't love the Mercedes dealers .

Is it thirsty? Yes. You can get 30+ MPG on a motorway run though. Great car, spacious enough for my needs, lovely engine without any artificial sound. Get the performance exhaust if you can for extra pops and crackles. I haven't got it but that lovely 3.0 V6 still sounds much better than any 4-pot.

Almost 18 months into ownership and I still don't get car envy. I'd normally be thinking "what next" by now.

Is the M340i touring out yet? That would probably be a good shout. I've got no experience of the S4 but it wouldn't be my first choice out of those three.
