It is very serious, even worse is double pneumonia.

Four years ago, I had chickenpox for the third time, & got pneumonia as well, spent a week in ICU,very frightening experience, it was Sunday when I didn't feel well, next thing I remember being told it was Wednesday morning,four days no memory of those days, took another four months recovering.

Got rather too close to those Pearly Gates.

Whilst serious. Its pretty common for those in his situation. And his Dr's would have caught it very early

My OH's Uncle has been in a coma since March 2011. And has had it a number of times.
 
I've read that his family have been told only a Miracle will bring him back out of this coma. :(

Doctors treating Michael Schumacher and other medical experts have told his family that "only a miracle" can save him, sources have claimed.
The seven-time Formula One world champion suffered serious brain injuries after hitting a rock during a skiing accident in the French Alpine ski resort of Meribel in late December.
He is being treated in hospital in Grenoble where he has been in an artificially induced coma for a total of 69 days.
Sources close to his family say the 45-year-old driver's wife Corinna and his brother, Ralf Schumacher, have been consulting brain specialists throughout Europe and have been told that his chances of recovery are minimal.
The family is said to be concerned that the French doctors treating Schumacher have little hope that he will recover and now assume that he will remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.

There was a suggestion recently regarding Schumacher, and his helmet. It stipulated that while having the helmet camera attached, it might have directly hit the rock, and then formed a penetrative object, which projected through his safety helmet, causing the injuries directly.
Suggestions were that a bump would have otherwise occurred, and his helmet would have protected him.

I haven't heard anything further on the matter, but it is certainly something people should consider when wearing such devices.

Is he still on a ventilator?

If he's breathing on his own then he's keeping himself alive and all the hospital will be doing is feeding (via a bag) and monitoring.

The issue with being in a coma for so long isn't the actual injury itself its secondary infections etc.
In my OH's uncle's case they estimate he will stay in a coma between 3-7 yrs before he passes away.

This could be a long long wait for significant news on Schumi

Although Pneumonia is very common in coma patients though. So he may have had it but by the time the story surfaced it had been treated. Either that or because its common the press took a punt
 
Poor Schumi. I really hope he pulls through and makes a full recovery, but you have to be realistic about these things.

Such a shame :(

Pneumonia is very common with ventilated patients and endemic on ICU wards, so its highly likely he either had it or has it currently. Its the depth of his blood clots thats causing issues though as they cannot be removed without turning him into a vegetable, so a lose lose situation in that regard.

Being on ICU also massively raises the risk of acquiring a nosocomial infection, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, which is a rather nasty bacterium that causes pneumonia like symptoms and is a nightmare to treat due to resistance strains becoming relatively more common due to antibiotic abuse over the last few decades.

His prognosis doesn't look good at all from the limited information we know as the general public so far though.
