How awful for the family. Imagine being in their position.

Despite the lack of official announcements, it really is looking bleak for poor Schumi. There are brain specialists out there throwing words around like miracle, then my guess is that its really going to take a miracle. It's no longer, well we'll wake him after the brain swelling is down.... It's now they've probably tried waking him, and he's not.. So chances are that's it for the poor man.

Very sad news.

Family says "small, encouraging signs" in his fight for recovery:

PARIS (AP) — Michael Schumacher's agent says there are small signs that the Formula One champion will wake from the coma he has been in for more than two months.

Still, Wednesday's statement from Sabine Kehm tempered optimism with caution.

"We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up. There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient," Kehm said.

Schumacher was hospitalized with severe head injuries after a December ski crash. His family has released few details about his condition. Doctors operated to remove blood clots from his brain, but some were too deeply embedded. Neurologists not involved in his treatment say full recovery appears increasingly unlikely, given the coma's duration and the extent of his injuries.

Whenever you read it in the news, get the distinct impression they think its litterally a matter of turning off the drugs and he'll wake up.

Not even close...

Surely though (and I'm not a medical professional), the longer you are in a coma the less likely it is that if and when you do come out of it, you will be the same person. The longer you are "away", the more muscle and brain wastage there will be. Perhaps someone can comment on this.

some people have been in comas for decades and woke seemingly fine just trapped in time

Wondering how the medics induse someone into a coma?

Morphine, midazolam, with paralysis to extent you need artificial ventilation with rapid cooling of the central core body temperature. You can do it with other drugs but that is arguably the best - eg phenobarb causes profound agitation.

I swear the next bit of news (positive I hope) is that he is wide awake and concious. None of this he moved his little toe nonsense or his eye twitched.

No need to be so negative. I would very much like to believe that there are significant signs of improvement. Lets all hope for the best.

He's right though; The family mention small, encouraging signs and released this and I quote:

On Wednesday, Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, released a statement on behalf of his family because of "an increasing interest in [his] condition in light of the start of the Formula 1 season"

There's no further detail what these signs are, and there's increased talk due to the F1 weekend this coming weekend.
