Microsoft Flight Simulator X

I bought a 2nd hand Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feeback 2 to replace my old Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro.

Had to switch off the force feedback while taxi-ing (not sure how to spell that one :D ) as the stick was going mental but in the air it works like a dream.

I wouldn't bother with force feedback if you want to play combat flight sims online though as it makes it harder to aim but for FSX it's certainly something to consider.

great patch (mostly) getting much better frame rates - and both cores now used at 90% :)

BUT get frequent severe stutters between the periods of time with decent frame rates now - which is almost more annoying than before LOL !

can anyone help me with a few Vista problems I'm having with this game too please ?

(1) I can't uninstall FSX to be able to reinstall it clean - FSX doesn't show up in my Programs list from "Programs, Control Panel". Checked game directory and does not have a uninstall program that I can see

(2) Alt-tabbing doesn't seem to work for me - ie play FSX for 30 mins -get an email - alt-tab out check email - fine - but then only about 25% of the time can I get back into FSX. It shows up as a process - using RAM etc - fine - but alt-tabbing doesn't work, go into task manager - and select switch to or bring to front - and it doesn't work - normally it just hangs task manager. Sometimes (about 1/4 of the time) -it switches back fine - but if it doesn't the only option is to "kill" the process and start again - which is rather frustrating.

(3) Windowed mode isn't liked by Vista much - in that I mean - it works fine - but wheras in XP - it didn't effect the frame rate - its far worse frame rate in any window size from small to large- almost as if its not 3d accelerated or Vista is trying to do some sort of resize or something.

thanks for any help,

When I try to alt tab back in I just get a blank screen but if you then press shift+F10 to bring up the in game menu the picture comes back.

Obviously not a fix but it works for me.

thanks Meths - that works :)

ps - if anyone is getting the major stutters with SP1 - reset

TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT

back to equaling 40 if you've tweaked it - makes a big difference

They do recommend a clean install of FSX before applying SP1. Only then can addons be applied. I've got a huge amount of scenery addons and tweaks and a complete reinstall of FSX, SP1, VFR 1, 2, 3 and MyTrafficX took me about 2 and a half hours :(

Works great though. No stutters, runs smoothly and autogen makes a huge difference to the VFR Scenery. :D A big improvement here.

spinner - would if I could - see post above !

I have no way of uninstalling FSX - doesn't show up in Vista's Programs to uninstall :(

tried deleting the FSX folder - but all the CFG, registery settings etc are still on the computer - so when I go to reinstall - it only alows me to "rebuild"

:(

Mark.

Can you not reinstall? I'm sure the option appears to uninstall, repair or reinstall appears. Let us know how you get on. I'm running Vista Business and it's listed here in add/remove.

A quick scout about some of the Flight Sim forums seems to indicate that SP1 is a success and that 20%-40% was a very conservative estimate. I guess they were looking to set and then exceed expectations. Some guys are getting twice the performance in airports with mid-high autogen (100% increase in performance ). The winners also appear to be Intel Core2Duo owners though, many of which are seeing most of the BIG gains.

It may of helped that an Intel memory threading guy spent considerable time working with the Aces Team on developing SP1.

Currently at work now and can't wait to get home to start really testing this out and measuring the impact this has had. I may defrag too since there's been a huge amount of uninstall/reinstall going on.

yep overclocked E6600 and substantial gains.

OK - at the moment only running @ 30fps average - BUT

almost everything (apart from bloom) is maxed out - whole new experience when you have full 3d clouds, all AI ground vehicles aircraft etc etc

big difference I notice too is the detail mesh wise on far off mountains - they actually look like mountains in the distance now - even if like 70 miles away.

Good stuff

Yay finally! Shame I'm at work though. :(

Will have to wait until tonight to do a fresh install of FSX and then patch, can't wait.

Being at work has it's benefits though. :D

I installed without removing my VFR scenery and doing a fresh FSX install..I only added it the other day on a pristine FSX and really didn't want to do all again.

Anyway dispite that, this update is the DB's..perfomance up by at least 40% - both cores at 90% load or more..a really fansastic effort from ACES - though you could argue this it how it should have been released to start with, but I'm not going to complain.

:D :D :D

Pre-SP1 I had autogen turned off. Now I'm on SP1 it's turned on and running well with it too, but the popup is BRUTAL. It was mentioned in this post but he didn't mention how close it was. I may have to spend a bit more time to refine the settings and apply the tweaks.

Overall though, superb.

Edit: 2km (6500ft) batching of autogen objects :-/
