Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Pretty good?

It's the best there is. From cold and dark to preflight to SID to STAR to post-flight to cold and dark it's as nigh on perfect a simulation as you can get. All done in glorious 2560x1024 virtual cockpit :)

The MD-11 is gonna have to be spectacular to beat it.
It is truly excellent but I give the edge to the LevelD 767. Just awesome.

Autoland flare is far far too soft and floaty.
Flight Director is a tad slow and inaccurate.
Slightly iffy FDE.
Poor VC ambient lighting.
No AIRAC SID STAR support.

And the unforgivable biggy - No virtual cockpit FMC.

I do fly the LDS every now and then for those wonderful transatlantic 10 hour Aeroflot marathons from CYYZ to UUEE but for me it always ends up a relief to fire up the PMDG 737/747 - it just feels so much better.

LDS deserve credit for their 767 - they've created something worth paying for - but personally I feel it's not a patch on the PMDG series.

And probably more detailed :D

I'd also argue its easily worth twice that for the systems programming and the way its almost real. Theres a reason real 747 pilots us it to help with procedure training!

Thread revival. :)

I have just installed the Mega Airport London Heathrow addon and cannot for the life in me get the gates to move and attach to the plane.

I have tried the usual CTR+J which did work on the gates before installing this but will not now. :(

Do the gates actually move on this addon?

Ta.

Just wondering if anyone knows how I can install aircraft?

I've downloaded a few but cant for the life of me get them installed - some tutorials say place in Aircrafts folder, some say extract to FSX directory and they will extract themselves and some say place in SimObjects !?

I've tried all three and I'm still not able to add an aircraft - I did somehow add one yesterday, however I cant remember how I did it because I was getting really annoyed and trying all sorts of combinations - Then I went to load the aircraft and begin flight and a FSX.EXE memory erorr appeared and FSX quit after pressing 'ok'.

Just wondering if theres an easy, simple way of adding aircraft (some come as Installers, some as .Rar files).

Help appreciated greatly!

Instead of starting a new thread and having to read through this big thread.

What mods should I be looking for to use with FSX? I heard about some real weather one not so long ago.

What's your thing, craft or scenery?

Since you mention weather you simply must get Flight Environment X. It's by far the best cloud, sky, water effects package on the market. Add to that the Ultimate Terrain series of products such as Ultimate Terrain X - Europe and for the elite in terms of photo-real scenery, get Horizons VFR Gen X. When working together, the results are jaw-dropping.

I know FSX doesn't take advantage of SLi, but does anyone know how the GTX295 fairs in FSX?
It won't even begin to tax that graphics card. Because everything in FSX is distant and animations are slow, the GPU does little work. It's the CPU that takes all the pain.

Others have already mentioned some good ones there, however, I cannot recommend Real Environment Xtreme enough. It is one of the newest add ons of it's type and is simply stunning. This add on alone has transformed my FSX experience beyond words. It's also worth adding that I don't get much of a performance hit from it as well, despite it changing so much within the program. The best add on I've ever used with a flight sim. ;)

Here's a few screens I took when I first got it. I'm still playing with all the options to get more out of it though.

I imagine MS still own the rights/IP? to the game, and when the economy picks up again I am sure they'll draft people in to make a new engine.

Agreed. I just can't see them canning the flight sim completely. I can't help but feel that some heads did need to roll after FSX was released though. Multi-core support should have been there from the start. I'm not sure what system they were testing it on when they plucked the system requirements out of the air but it was well beyond a joke.

I am only now able to play it with a decent frame rate and that's a couple of years since buying the thing. I am all for the sim pushing the limits of what can be done, and especially for longevity, although it could have been coded to make use of multi core systems so much better. It's not like they weren't around at the time or knew that they weren't becoming more common.

Are there any decent free addons? Dont fancy paying another 30quid out to get addons for it.
All the very best add-ons are payware. For freeware head on over to AVSIM and register. Once in, go to the file library and you'll find plenty of scenery, objects and craft to choose from. It's probably the largest collection there is.
