*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

Just had this appear, don't know whether to update now or wait a bit.

I got the same today, think I'll hold off until the new year though.

Had a couple of strange crashes where it just reboots itself. I still get issues with my display, which is caused by the Samsung 4K TV I use instead of a monitor I suspect. After being on all night, when I switch on the screen in the morning, I cannot get it into 4k unless I reinstall the display driver. Highest it will go is 1080p. I did have this with Ten too but it stopped happening after a while. Now on 11 and it is back.

Anybody know how I can add the clock back to non primary monitors in Win11? In Win10 you could see the time\date on secondary screens when you had something in full screen on your primary screen. I can't find the option in 11. It's really annoying.

From what I can see/find you cant do it, without a third party app. I found this one recommended in my searches. I have not tried it as I decided to live without it for now.

I’ve had two of these in the month I have been running Windows. The screen goes black then shortly after the system reboots. Both times it happened at the desktop whilst doing undemanding stuff. Absolutely nothing in the event logs other than the unexpected shutdown. The blank screen makes me think display driver and desktop composition. I may try disabling GPU acceleration in my browsers if it happens again.

May or may not be related but there seems to be some kind of strange memory leak in more WDM in more recent versions of 10 and 11 - mostly with Intel IGP but also can happen with other configs. It just sits there eating memory until after about 8 hours it uses it all available memory and Windows just dies - though I've not seen it result in a reboot - just screen goes blank and nothing.

Hmm, interesting. On both occasions it was after fairly long desktop sessions but perhaps not 8 hours. Never had it on Windows 10 and I don't have an Intel IGP.
I found a Reddit thread describing the exact same issue, although they were experiencing much more frequent reboots. Two folks had an MSI Z390 board (similar, but different model to me), one had an Asus Z390.

Just done a fresh install from 10 > 11, nothing odd to report. Just a few irritating customisation things. Like the network icon being glued to the volume icon and being unable to hide them, just a minor niggle.

But in general, seems to be fine :) The start menu doesn't bother me.

I use rainmeter to re-add a clock on the 2nd monitor. It works for me, even if it's not perfect.

Thanks guys. It's the only thing I don't like about Windows 11 but it's really bugging me. :p

I regret updating. Having audio issues. Windows 11 on my laptop does not seem to like the Realtek audio drivers, had to revert to the default windows ones.

The audio on the realtek was awful and I think I'm still having problems with sound just cutting out when changing source, or even for example when one Netflix episode ends and a new ones starts. Boom, no audio :/

Microsoft are useless and there does not appear to be windows 11 specific drivers yet.

@Stumble Bum what driver revision did you use for the Realtek ones..?

I had a look on HP's website (my laptop make) and they only had the following available of which I tried:

Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver 6.0.1.8110 Rev.A 275.1 MB May 2, 2017

Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver (Windows 10 v1709) 6.0.1.8437 Rev.C Jun 7, 2018

I can't currently see what the Realtek version it was as I had to uninstall / disable it. But the above two seem the only ones available?

I use Gigabyte hosted Realtek drivers, noted above in my screenshot for the revision and date. I have, in the past, used others hosted from other manufacturers, and they seemed ok. Maybe these could help you as they are Windows 11 noted......

I do have a Gigabyte motherboard, being a desktop PC, with a Realtek ALC1220 sound chip.

Also these two threads can be useful.....

Hi, thanks but these drivers don't seem to be supported by my fairly bog standard motherboard it would seem. Hopefully HP get some updated drivers at some point.

Updated to W11 earlier and now, no matter what I do, any external HDD or flashdrive I plug in won't automatically open to file explorer despite me having that option set as the default in settings.

And where's the weather app gone too, now if I open the weather widget it opens up Edge and takes me to a MSN page rather than the dedicated weather app.

An interesting little article on Forbes

7 Quick Ways To Make Windows 11 Better (forbes.com)

Stuff in there I never knew - installing Power Toys (an old favourite of mine which I didn't realise even existed these days) allows you to do a search by pressing ALT + Spacebar.

Start > Settings > System > Clipboard allows you to turn on clipboard history so you can see previous copy/pastes by pressing WINDOWS + V

I had similar issues on an old machine and Win10. I eventually just bought a USB sound card for that machine. The USB sound card has been handy to fix audio for online classes etc. Haven't had driver issues since XP. Very nostalgic.
