if it gets rid of erdogan this can only be a good thing - he is a nutcase with strong ties to IS.

the turkish military has strong links to the US so wouldn't be surprised at a bit of encouragement there.

Always the same with coups like this - at first the BBC barely say anything beyond parroting official lines until its clear one side or the other has won out then they jump full on it :S

You mean rather than speculate for viewership?

BBC news is currently discussing it and has been for the last few minutes.

On which continents does Istanbul sit?

Istanbul sits on two continents. Europe and Asia. 95% of Turkey is in Asia.

FYI, the middle east isn't a continent, it's a region. Turkey is on the middle east region.

World Service is discussing why it happened and providing some back story rather than "quick, an unverified video from Twitter, get it up there".

Agree in sentiment but in practise could be temporary anarchy or long term civil war in long term.

I doubt there'll be a civil war, but if one does occur I'll be supporting to secular forces of the Ataturk military. That said, there have been purged of the military recently so it may be there are forces loyal to the Islamist president.

More than that though - its often barely mentioned with other less consequential news pushed to the top at first. Its rarely a "breaking headline" until much later compared to other types of news.

Isn't it a military coup in a Democratic country?
Turkey has recently been clamping down on free media, social media and other things we consider rights whilst concentrating power with the president. They were never going to get into the EU with Erdogan in charge. Past recent coups have always re-established secular democracy, if the same happens again then it returns them onto the path towards EU membership.

you do have to wonder how much the US/UK knew about this in advance (if at all) - while it would be rather too dodgy/risky for them to explicitly encourage said coup (especially if it went wrong and they were found out!) it wouldn't be surprising at all for them to know in advance and chose not to do anything about it

Terrible from Erdogan. I know he's desperate but you don't go imploring people to go and protest in places where the military are at a time like this.

Also, just thinking, what happened to Erdogans ban on street protests? He appears to be having second thoughts on that one.
