Military coup in Turkey?

I'm not sure we really know that for sure either way... sure there are various statements by people in power etc.. however that hasn't seemed to have changed the situation on the ground yet

the more interesting bit of information are the jet shooting the helicopter for example, whether that was another part of the military opposing the coup or something else... the PM has made statements re: all planes currently flying over Ankara will be shot down which implies that they're all pro-coup

You are correct. Like I said before, there is much information and misinformation flying around.

It's going to be quite telling where Erdogan pops up.

Not sure what dowie is going on about.

It is pretty obvious the coup has failed. Civilians have taken control of significant parts of Istanbul.

There have been many pictures of soldiers backing off.

My head hurts. I don't know what to think / believe. This is totally nuts.

Time to hit the Canadian Club...

it isn't obvious at all - it might well fail but it is clearly still ongoing - unless you've got a crystal ball...

I mean they've just bombed parliament!

Not really - well, to me, it sounds more like the Erdogan side is the one which shot the helicopter down. Saying we'll shoot down anything over Ankara doesn't mean they themselves won't fly there to carry out the threat/enforce the no fly zone.

well given the bombing of the parliament building I'd say it isn't clear at all

it doesn't... point is the coup clearly isn't over and it is rather premature to call it one way or the other at this point

There is no coup anymore. It has obviously failed.

If some of the remaining soldiers want to commit terrorism, it won't help them achieve a coup.

More pictures coming out with armed police on the streets now.

it might have failed, it really hasn't 'obviously' failed yet given that it is quite clearly still going... stating 'there is no coup anymore' right after the military has just bombed the parliament building is being rather premature to say the least!
