Mini keyring-sized digital camera/camcorder

Took a test clip on mine, the quality is far better than that posted on YouTube, are there any secrets to getting a nice conversion? (pre-convert maybe?).

Anyone successfully managed to use a different battery to extend the life? Just seen it mentioned that it only lasts for 30 mins? :(

I will be ordering a few bits AA or AAA battery box+switch and some kind housing. Hopefully for only a few pounds this will be a huge improvement for trackday use.

Well, super secret spy cam lives up to it's nickname.

This evening - I quite clearly picked up a big candle from a table, turned it upside down, and put the camera on top, pointed directly at a friend who was on a bean bag about 2ft away from it. He hadn't seen it before, and paid absolutely no attention to it for 30 mins.

And baited him into revealing his conquests this year, who he's after, and then just nugget after nugget of bribe worthy scandals were unveiled.

Sound is perfect, it was a dark-ish room but can lighten.
This thing is golden.

With great power comes great responsibility (or maybe not in this case!) :D

Another sample clip, attached it to the front of my KA by sliding it between the bumper and the Ford badge. Then looped a cable tie through the grill and the chain itself so when the camera fell out it stayed attached to the car rather than the road. :p
Its nothing great but you can see how the camera handles motion.

Not bad quality, thats compressed aswel, raw would be better.

Did you drag it along the tarmac? or just hover above it? That would be a good build quality test if its still working and in one piece

Nah, after it fell out of place it just dangled about 2cm below the badge and got smacked about abit on the bumper due to the wind. Still works fine though.

What is everyone doing for compression for uploading the videos to youtube?
Program and codec.

I've been using Any Video Converter.
x264 Codec (1 Encode Pass) / 720x480 / 2000kbps Bitrate / 30fps

Edit : The original file weighs in at 1.22Gb, 24 minutes 12 seconds, then it begun recording to a new file.

Nice one, let me know how it goes. I think I'll do the same thing as i have loads of AA batteries.

Not sure how ambitious you guys are but this guy took nasa quality photos of earth with a homebuilt £500 Satellite using parts off ebay -

I think I might give it ago, ive been looking into it since ordering the camera.

Ive found suitable balloons and where to get helium from. Next is keeping track of it, and since I dont have 20 miles or so of string, a GPS tracker it is. This seems like its going to be the most expensive part so far so any good links to cheaper trackers would be great.

Problems so far:

1. 30 min record time, Ive read the ascent can take 2 hours, so several cameras on delay circuits may be needed.
2. The above will add weight and so a bigger balloon needed, adding to the cost.
3. How will the batteries perform under cold temperatures.

Plus many more...

But I like a challenge and ive been looking for a new project. Its looking like this initial £9 camera might cost me abit more lol.

Take a look at the TK201 on this page: http://www.mr-lee-catcam.de/pe_cc_o2_en.htm

It's designed for tracking pets but if you spend 10 minutes reading through the PDF on the site you'll see that it has many features and talks over the GSM network via SMS. I don't have any idea how far up you can get GSM coverage but on the way up and as it falls down you can track it.

It's about £90 which seems quite good for the features it has to offer.

Is this due to the SD card, batteries or a limit of the camera? If it's the batteries then you should be able to rig an external power supply.
