Mistakes of this console generation

Where did you get that incorrect fact from? DVD reading rate is actually faster than blu-ray.
Neither are are fast as the HDD.

Incorrect again. Wii consoles sell fast meaning there is much bigger userbase which developers can not ignore. Around 18.5 millions Wii were sold after just 1 year and it won't be long before it passes Gamecube's lifetime sale of just 21 millions! Like PS2 - More consoles sold equals more publishers.

My opinion on that comes from chats I have had with a friend who works as a buyer for a publisher (not sure that is the correct term, he evaluates games coming from developers then presents to managers the case of why they should pick up/fund/publish the title). He has yet to have one of the Wii games he has selected picked up because they cannot compete with the big guns like Mario Galaxy, Zelda etc unless it is an existing title being published for other formats as well.

Maybe you need to read up some facts before posting each consoles' pros and cons!
Maybe you need to calm down :p These are my opinions, not facts.

I only had to do that to charge the controllers.
I just press the button in the middle and it syncs.
I think initially I had to connect the pad with a cable to the PS3, also with early updates a cable was needed after updating but now that is solved and they keep working wireless.

The only time a cable is needed is when the batteries are empty.

See another thing that bugs me in current console 'wars' is people going on about the speeds of the two different disc formats.

Sure currently the DVD at x16 speed outdoes Blu-ray at x2 speed. But the 360 using the DVD-ROM at its full speed is half the reason the blooming thing is so loud when you play a game.
I cannot play on the 360 in the middle of the night unless I wish to put on headphones. Reason I obviously say that is because in order to hear the sound from something like Bioshock, which is most of the time a relatively quiet game with spurts of high audio volumes, you have to keep the TV on high volumes, and in the middle of the night that just doesn't work.

Blu-ray on the other hand, currently has data reading speeds of more than half than that of DVD and it doesn't have to spin up as fast = quieter.

I could very well, within reason too! say that Blu-ray reading speeds will get faster and out do DVD with x4 speed (effectively the next step), they're bound to, just like with every other optical media we've had to date.

Yet sadly even though if the PS3 adopts the faster drives in their later revisions of the console, we early adopters will still be stuck with the x2 speed drives so effectively rendering this rant pointless. Although.. PS3 will still be (much) quieter, regardless ;)

But hey, if corporate marketing is anything to go by, I'm sure we'll see a 250GB Super Elite Premium PS3 soon-ish ;)

OK, fair enough, not used PSN as much as Live,

It isn't a "sweeping generalization"

Taken from here

I can find more if you like ;)[/I]

Yep, some interesting comments in that link if you care to read it more thoroughly, here's one from someone who knows what they're talking about...

A 12x CAV drive like the one in the 360 will be 12x speed for around 15% of the outer disc, that figure is peak performance. The closer to the inner ring it gets the slower accesses get (5x speed on the inner ring) - probable average: around 8x speed. Another interesting thing seems to escape everyone is that the 12x DVD drive in the 360 only reads dual layer discs at a maximum of 8x speed. As it was in single layer, the 8x speed is peak performance. The 2x speed BD drive performs quite well in this case: a BD25 on PS3 fares better than a DVD9 on the 360. The great majority of 360 games are and will be pressed on DVD9s. Another interesting point with existing CLV BD drives is that they do not have the dual layer penalization with DVD dics. If a BD drive is rated to read DVDs at 8x, it will read dual layer DVDs at 8x as well. This is why Sony is comfortable with its choice and knows it will hold its own against MS's choice in the DVD format.

Caching thankfully minimizes either DVD or BD's shortcomings, and careful authoring on either format will help minimize speed issues. These technicalities shouldn't matter to a true gamer and any advantages in either format will in all likelyhood go unnoticed in any regard to the untrained.

the bit i've made italic I suspect is a typo.

both formats have their pros and cons, developers may need to cache some things to HD on PS3 but at the same time on 360 they'll need to arrange all the "streamed" data to the outer edge of the disc where access is fastest.

360: Reliability or peripherals and console (dodgy wireless headsets, controllers and wireless wheel recalls)
360: Noise
360: XBArcade should have been so much more

PS3: Pathetic controllers
PS3: Stupid price, they included far more than people were willing to pay for
PS3: Insane amount of heat, it's ridiculous

Wii: Underpowered
Wii: Needs better online support, I hate the Wii code system
Wii: Stock issues holding back sales

Quicktime events. I know it's a game issue and not a console issue but goddamit stop putting this stupid silly thing into games! It's a crutch for an incompetent lack of interactivity.

Anyways, consoleslol:

PS3:

Advertising campaign, what a load of pretentious pompous hubris-soaked nonsense. Not a single smidgeon of gameplay in sight, except for the very recent Saliva adverts, which are still taking a backseat to the Entertainers adverts. Sony being Sony here, by never actually showing their products in action in advertising.

Public relations.
If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1200 bucks for it.
If you look at the adoption rate of the DS over the first 17 months, not only does it trail the PSP but it also trails their other platforms ... They're potentially losing some of their core audience and they're not really expanding beyond that.
Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology.
With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.

All talk and no walk. The lack of meeting up to the hype and self-generated bull****. I bought a PS3 for 425 pounds at release, expecting a console that knows itself, and has a library to absolutely stomp on God's face and stick a baton up his pooper. That never happened. Almost a year on, I'm finally playing something with real substance (Uncharted and Warhawk), but still waiting for my 'last-gen' rumble pad and integrated XMB. I didn't even get a HDMI cable with it, that had to be bought separately, piling the cost up some more. One of the worst console launches in history. They couldn't sack Kutaragi fast enough, and did another clanger by putting 'RIDGE RACEEER' Hirai in his spot. The PS3 still struggles and flounders to this day. Stop sucking, Sony, and start eating humble pie while taking a step back and using your brains like you did when you made and released the PS1 and PS2. The PS3 is a total brain-fart, a train-wreck of epic proportions when compared to its two illustrious predecessors.

Xbox 360
Microtransactions. Or, as I like to call it, microrape-me-up-the-butt-with-my-wallet. Microsoft has absolutely no shame in reminding everyone of its greedy capitalist pig roots and charges left and right for even the tiniest of additions that hardly warrant more than a passing glance in the first place. They were the ones who forced Epic to charge gamers for Gears of War additional content even though Epic vowed never to price them. Another example of Microsoft's exceptional greed would be the new Halo map-pack, which is one of the most slated and overpriced additions I've seen in a long time. The three maps alone cannot possibly justify the price. With the excellent PSN service now looming over the XBL service and still being absolutely free, Microsoft are simply not budging on their stance. They are resting on their laurels on this case, and it will cost them more than they ever costed gamers, the greedy gets.

Broken consoles - in a rush to get the console out the door so that Microsoft can cement being first place and secure a decent installed base, they neglected one very important element: does this thing even work? No says thousands upon thousands of gamers, as they tear their hairs out in frustration. The 3RROD is one of the biggest issues we saw this year, and we even saw an appearance of the issue on the TV show Watchdog. Microsoft eventually pledged 1 billion dollars towards solving the issue, of which they still haven't. New falcon sets with the altered heatsinks and such are still 3RROD'ing.

Wii

Don't get me started. Shovelware, crap graphics, a threat to hardcore gaming, etc. I'm happy it got me 300 pounds though, people just can't get enough of shallow waggle.

xbox 360 : poor thermal design - throws out a ton of heat and is very noisy
xbox 360 : ms points are useless, couldve just used real world currency
xbox 360 : £40 for xbox live, its a great service but it could be cheaper ;)

PS3 : i find the controller uncomfortable, although dual shock 3 might change this
PS3 : the price is high
PS3 : its a dust magnet and gives off a lot of heat

wii : lack of decent 3rd party games
wii : it sucks. ;)

I would say, Any Launch or Early built consoles have a VERY VERY high chance of dying. Newly built Consoles on the other hand. Not so much

Any built before November 2006 has an extremely high chance of failing. The rest, as the wise man above me said, not so much, but it's still there. Microsoft recognizes this by having a lifetime 3RROD warranty. People will use this to say 'oh it won't matter then' - they clearly haven't gone through the experience of waiting a month or even longer for a replacement. Like I have. Twice.

edit: I love this thread. It lets me bash the consoles and vent my seething Kratosesque anger. They need to make me head of Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo and I'll show them how to make a good console :p The big overall issue is that we simply want to play games, yes? But we have so many issues standing in the way of that. I certainly can't remember so many issues in the last generation, save for dodgy lens on so and so PS2s.

Is it also a case of the amount of use and where the 360 is kept?

e.g. A casually used 360 compared to one used 24/7? or The 360 being in the open in a large room downstairs compared to a small stuffy bedroom on someones floor/under other equipment/monitors ect?

How do the launch day consoles differ?

Those can help to ease or exacerbate what is already a fragile situation.

:D Hmmmm most of my online gaming is done on my PC leading me to ponder trading in the 360 for the PS3 if it really is a ticking timebomb (surely it only gets better for the PS3 from here and I like the idea of silence)

Guys, can you stop turning this into a 360 vs PS3 debate and answer in the format I asked for in the OP, or I'll asked the thread to be closed as there are 50 bjillion other threads that debate this issue at length.
Then you should have made a 'you must own all consoles' format in the original post. How people can possibly comment on a console they don't own is asking for trouble. You get such statements like..
PS3 is overpriced and Fugly as hell, plus the controllers are naff and you can't use rechargables in them.
He obviously doesn't own one and there lies the problem. The thread is full of people rattling on about something they don't own and getting things wrong, then arguing about them and so on.

/close thread, start a new one with strict rules/format and you might get some decent user feedback.
