Monaco Grand Prix 2010, Monte Carlo - Race 6/19

I think there's going to be a bit of a backlash against the ex-drivers as steward assistants now. Especially as the one this weekend was Damon Hill... and look who got punished.

At worst they should have just put MS back into the position he was, rather than actually dropping him down further. Crazy stuff.

They can' do that. It's either a 20s pen or a grid penalty in the next race.

As a Schumacher fan I wanted him to keep the place, but I think it could have went either way and it went against him.

Looks like he was done under article 40.13
"if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pitlane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking,"

although that does seem to counter the new rule that you can overtake after the first safety car line, plus all the green flags that were being waved.

I doubt Hill had much input tbh. Hill was there to give a drivers input where as this about the way a rule should be interpreted.

Ridiculous decision, why bother bringing the SC in then saying the race was still under SC. What's the point in watching F1 if they're going to make random decisions on who to punish and who not to.

I never believed the whole Ferrari International Assist thing before, but am starting to now. First Alonso gets off the dangerous overtaking move on Massa into the pits, then gets handed this at Monaco - very fishy.

Edit: The SC car came in, there were green flags, he overtook after the SC line. Seems everyone knew it was ok to race to the finish line.

The pass was legitimate. The mistake lies with the FIA bringing the safety car in with lights off and green flags. I would expect that in a situation where the race finishes under safety car, the lights should remain on, and yellow flags with SC boards should be displayed to the finish line, despite the car pulling into the pits.

The case here was that the race was technically resumed, and so due to the new rules this year, the pass was legitimate.

You have to admire the tact of Schumacher, he's ultra competitive and has his brain engaged even at the very end. I know a lot of people don't like him, but you still have to admire how well he knows this game. He never fails to impress me and cause controversy at the same time!

What I don't dispute is that the pass is almost against the spirit of the rules. I'm not sure how much weight that carries, but rules are there to be pushed and bent, that's for sure.

I think this is the wrong decision. I’d be interested to know on what grounds this is based, as my interpretation (a literal interpretation) would say the pass was legitimate.
At worst they should have swapped the places back, not a 20sec penalty. It was the race directors fault for bringing in the car and not finishing under SC, I don’t know why Schumacher is punished for that. He drove a solid race and doesn’t deserve to be demoted to 12th. Harsh, I wonder how much Damon Hill had to do with the decision.

My respect for the race stewards (who've been pretty good this year) is now lost. I can understand ruling against, but such a harsh penalty was unnecessary.

It's all a bit of a mess really, why bring in the safety car for the end of a lap if your going to be ending the race under safety car conditions, and if so why pass the message that the safety car is coming in on this lap if the race is ending under the safety car.

Teflonso proves his worth again ;)

That's four people I know who fell asleep during this race.
I didn't fall asleep but I did record and watch it on fast forward - the best way to watch the Monaco Grand Procession ;)

I had to laugh at Schumacher's bit of cheek and then cheer for joy when he got 20s added to his time :D
