Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

I've been using my Starling card in USA recently and it's been a pretty great experience. Bank transfers are literally instant to the point I've actually did some at the checkout and then used the card. Exchange rate is great and it's much cheaper than doing a currency conversion at the till or ATM.

Only downside is that I have my Starling card linked to Google Pay on my phone and whilst most transactions have been seamless, there are a couple of vendors that just seem to decline for no reason (see images in spoiler).

I'm amused by all the high street banks now offering the ability to freeze your card. It looks like they're sitting up and taking notice of all these new disruptive banks.

Starling offering cash deposits at the post office now, https://www.starlingbank.com/blog/post-office-deposits/

You need one of their new portrait debit cards to use the service though, so you may need to request one to use the feature. Handy service as i've only HSBC within a 15 mile radius and i don't bank with them.

Very handy. I wonder why they've opted for only allow this for their new cards though. What difference does it make?

Yep, exactly what I thought. Saw an ad the other day and thought "Really? This is a feature?" It has kind of become the norm for me. I'm also amused at how Halifax are currently advertising the fact that they have contactless cards.

Got email about Post Office deposits yesterday. Should come in handy, in fact it's better than most banks that allow Post Office deposits as most usually require you have a personalised paying in slip where as Starling you can just rock up with the cash.

Also wondering why it only works on the new teal card, wonder if it's something to do with the chip not being compatible in the old card or something.

Which banks? I’ve paid cash into both First Direct and NatWest by just rocking up with cash :)

TSB, Lloyds, RBS, Barclays, to name a few. I had cash to deposit a few weeks ago and had to travel to a Lloyds branch to deposit it into my old Lloyds account. Couldn't even use the local Post Office as I had no personalised slips. Whatever they are.

Anyway I'll have to request a new card from Starling before I can use this new feature.

Got my metal card through last week. Man, it's such a simple thing, but it's really nice. People look weirdly at me when I hand it over, since it's just black metal with a nice R in the corner and since my name is Ross it's like it's my initial :D

Used Revolut in Italy last week, flawless and easy.

I really want to move to Starling though, for the direct debits, but I am finding having 2 cards with Revolut so useful for the joint house account with the missus. If only they did that.

Interested on that, do you have two Revolut accounts? One in £ and one in € with a debit card each?

no, you have one account with multiple balances (so some in gbp, some in euros etc etc)
However, i only kept balances in gbp, and they'd just convert and deduct from the gbp balance if you used abroad. Very very simple.
I moved to Starling in the end, which is the superior product IMO.

Some caution to be heeded with Revolut, apparently. Backed by a Lithuanian bank with questionable protection.

Won't be keeping any real amount of money in it. Think I currently only have 1p in them left over from the £10 I had to deposit to open the account.

I was one of the Icesave savers and I got my money back from the UK government. If it happened again with Revolut I'm sure the UK gov will step in again if they want to win votes.
