more PC garbage

Lionesses welcomed home

what a load of *******s - how is this sexist or patronising even if taken out of context, cut and paste, painted splattered stated whatever?

Let's replace that exact sentence with the male equivalents:

Our lions go back to being fathers, partners and sons but they have taken on another title: heroes...

Is that sexist to any of you? Do any fella's here feel their rights have been compromised? Any of us feel patronised by this?

It's garbage like this that mocks the real struggles faced by women in gender equality - so how is it that this tosh is given the light of day? Honestly makes me furious
What's sexist is that such a thing would never be said about the men's team - because they are considered to be full-time professional footballers first and foremost. The women's team, from the tweet, seem to be considered mothers, partners, daughters ahead of being professional footballers. In their private life, that may be the case, but this was a comment on their professional life.

But the women aren't professional footballers. They're part time players. They do all those things that are described. How is telling the truth sexist?
Telling the truth makes it even worse!
It's not the truth: they're actually full time professionals. Presumably, with that being the basis of your contention, you now change your opinion (?)

It's not an opinion. Women's football even at the top tier in the UK is still classed as semi pro. None of the teams are standalone in their own right and are parented by male clubs.

I'm sure someone thought it was a great idea to tweet that, but these days people are so easily offended that it's unreal.

Still, one thing is clear - it'd be nice if the england lad's squad got on this par; I'd say the big difference is that the ladies squad are playing the game with passion, instead of a passion for their wallets and endorsement deals.

I don't know about all of them(I can't even name them all), but I know off-hand that Bristol Academy aren't parented by a men's team.

As for the "professional" side, all the England players (whom the tweet was referring to) are Professionals. And around half the teams in the Women's super league are too.

And it was an opinion: you opined that it wasn't sexist because it was true, and the non-pro status was part of that (and, as I've pointed out, was factually incorrect). My question was: since you have now been informed the pillar of your opinion was incorrect, has your opinion changed?

You're wrong again. They're supported by bristol city fc who provide sponsorship to allow them to exist at all. Go do some research and come back.

The tweet was massively sexist. It frames their achievements against supporting men. It's utterly patronising.

Of course, we're never going to find out whether the FA would write such a tweet about the men's team as our men are unlikely to finish third at a World Cup any time soon.

So, like, Man Utd are parented by Chevrolet, yeah?

it's a ****ing shirt sponsorship deal - a commercial agreement.

I suggest you look more in to it. It's not merely a shirt sponsorship deal. Also look at the origins of the club. They were originally an offshoot of i think bristol rovers. Where they started as a female youth team. They then amalgamated with another local clubs female team. Which also wouldn't have existed without the male parent club.

Having fact-checked, it's not even a shirt-sponsorship deal :)

It is, however, merely a sponsorship and some mutual commercial promotion.

Besides all that, do you feel any differently on the tweet now that you know the England players are all Professional players?

No. Because as I've said, the whole wfa is classed as semi professional at best. It could not exist without the input of the male parent clubs. Look at the premiership. It's full of the female counterparts of male clubs which exist purely because of the backing of the male clubs.
As far as I can tell it does not yet have the ability to stand on its own two feet without the support of the parent clubs both financially and training wise.

First of all, storm in a teacup. Obviously wasn't meant to offend and had it said Fathers, partners and Sons then no one would have batted an eyelid.

Also, you can be heroic in defeat you know! No shame in getting beaten if you give it your all. If you want to snigger at them having that term being applied then ask yourself what have you achieved in your life that's comparable? Third best in a competition that's the pinnacle of your sport... you haven't? Then maybe don't be so smug. If the men's team managed that and were also unlucky in getting knocked out in the semi you'd never hear the end of it.

Yeah, but the tweet you were ok with was talking about the professionals in the England team. You thought it was ok because they weren't professionals.

Most male football players, throughout the tiers, aren't professionals - it's not exactly relevant when discussing the guys at the top.

Smug? The hell are you on about? They aren't heroes, you don't have to accomplished very meaningful things in life to make the factually correct statement that they aren't heroes.

No one is sniggering, where have you even got that from? I'm surprised you haven't accused people of jealousy.

I know you like a bit of precision, Spoffle, so perhaps we need to define "hero"

Over to the Oxford English:
A person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities

3rd place in a competition where a last-8 appearance would have been classed as superb is objectively an outstanding achievement, and their spirit in doing so is, for many, an admirable trait.

The men's team in 1990 and 1996 were also referred to as heroes. It's pretty standard for a semi-final appearance.

The issue there is it seems a bit of a stretch to consider players of a game who get paid obscene amounts of money (though I assume the women don't get anywhere near the male play pay) as courageous, noble or it being an outstanding achievement.

It probably doesn't help that I put extremely little value in football, however.
