MOT fail thread

A long weekend for a good job. Repeat every 5 to 7 years if your keeping the car.

Not so much an MOT failure but certainly a failure of some sorts but not sure it’s worth it’s own thread. Got a phone call the other day from my partner who was quite stressed out telling me her car would not start. I asked her exactly what it was doing and imitated the noise of the starter trying to but failing to crank the engine. Upon asking if any other electrics in the car were working such as lights the answer was no. Culprit.. identified. I explained I would need to check the battery when I got home as I presumed it to be some level of failure there. She said oh, I thought it was my oil so I filled that up. I at the time laughed it off with her and hung up until a few minutes later when the shock of what she had said actually hit me. I phoned her back asking when you said you filled the oil up…. What do you mean.. filled.

That’s right boys, the oil was a good 3” up the dipstick beyond where it should be… This has fortunately now been resolved by a swift battery change and a trip albeit a white Smokey exhaust pipe trip to the very local garage. A laugh with the mechanic and £15 later to drain it.

Corrosion appears to be my enemy at the moment on my 2001 Focus. Had new sills welded last year as although it passed last year's MOT the tester said it will likely fail on it next time round.

Passed the next MOT a few weeks ago with a different bit of corrosion at the rear somewhere as an advisory but other than that and rusty brake pipes the tester said it was a decent solid car. I've gone round the car and spotted a few bits underneath and edge of doors that look suitable for the Kurust route so ordered some the other to try.

This gonna fail MOT? I'm getting tracking done, but tyre is good, looks a little worse as its filled the tread in a bit (I obviously have half turn on steering wheel in photo, my toe isn't out that far).

This also only reared it's head because I did a lot of straight motorway driving recently.

My edge's are worse than that but still has plenty of wear in the middle so just had them swapped with the rear ones to get the most out of them. Rear ones are still very good, these tyres will be changed because of their age not the wear( 2018 manufactured) they are beginning to crack on the side walls .

Will be fine. The outer bit is classed as additional tread which isn't as deep as primary tread. Primary tread is where the tread wear indicators are, and is the only part of the tyre that can be measured for wear.
