Motorsport Off Topic Thread

Oh believe me I don't disagree with the rule, I think it is a great idea, but I think they needed a better way to monitor it like a standardised fuel rail, or a better method of calibrating rather than some fubar offset decided the day before the race.

There is unlikely a better way to measure it. That's why they went with it gill is hugely experienced and its got to be based on weight not volume.

Does anyone know if the F1 engine's energy store use the same kind of battery they are talking about in this article that i saw in the missing Malaysia plane thread? http://www.airtrafficmanagement.net/2014/04/lithium-cargo-facing-outright-ban/

If they do ban the kind of batteries that F1 uses from being flown altogether then it could give the people in charge of ferrying the batteries from one place to another a major headache, because each driver can only use 5 of the energy stores throughout the season before getting a penalty. Each car needs a minimum of two energy stores available at each race in case one fails, which means that, as far as I can tell, there will be at least one energy store that has to be transported to the race after the next one as soon as the current race has finished, which could be as little as 2 1/2 weeks (or 1 1/2 weeks if there are three races in a row, I haven't checked though). Obviously this wouldn't be a problem when the European races are happening, but am I right in thinking that it could be a bit tight for time during the flyaway races where the team's only option would probably be to send the batteries by boat?

F1 uses their own cargo freight - rather than passenger flights as per the article you linked to. So I doubt this will effect F1 even if they are the same type of battery (and even then F1 can always use private planes which again wouldnt be covered by the ban if it goes ahead).

No, as that is about non-rechargeable Lithium batteries. F1 batteries are rechargeable Lithium-ion, which are not a concern.

The article says they are going to have a meeting next week where they will decide if they want lithium batteries to be baned in cargo planes too

Oh OK, I just remembered that the F1 energy store used some kind of lithium batteries, and that a similar thermal runaway could happen to them.

Looked a bit lighter than Damon's colours, like his sons, but could just be the photo. Would make more sense to be Damon I guess :o

He's not a complete novice. He came joint 4th out of 24 in the 2013 Radical SR1 Cup.

We camped next to him at Cadwell. That's about as close to fame I reckon I'll get. :D

Doesn't mix with the other teams like most do, but I suppose that's expected given he'd be mobbed a lot of the time.

I don't think they can change the name mid-season (though I'm sure if it meant a change of ownership would guarantee the future of a team, the other teams would agree), but it probably means they're up for sale. Probably a viable option for any team which doesn't get entry in this round of applicants (read: something half-hearted from the States).

Well that's completely random.

Sir Chris Hoy to race in british GT

Hopefully it'll give British GT more of a profile as I think it's great. Will try to make the Brands round again this year.

He will get his ass handed to him... oh well Hoy... ahoyhoy.

He's a pretty handy driver and think it's in advance of him racing at Le Mans in 2016. Not sure if it was shown south of the Border, but I really enjoyed his tribute to Colin McRae:
