apparently it would be a total pull out and wash their hands of F1.

I guess with all he money and resources they have put into f1 and beeing one of the oldest brands still in the sport not getting the same deal as rbr/mcl/fer must feel like a kick in the teeth

It's all just bluster to get a better deal out of Bernie in the new Concorde. There's more chance of Curiosity finding Marvin the Martian than them completely pulling out.

Schumacher is delaying his choice because he's trying to figure out if it's worth him carrying on. His second career has been akin to a cat thats been run over by a car yet isn't quite dead, dragging itself aimlessly up the garden path.

For what its worth, ive heard that as a company [in name ] Mercedes are trying to distance themselves from the current setup. Passing the day-to-day running and name to AMG.

Why do Mercedes think they have anywhere near the same stake in F1 as Ferrari or McLaren? Ferrari have been in F1 since the begining, and McLaren since ages ago. Merc have been in it for 3 years and hardly sparkled.

Sounds like they are looking for excuses to pull out that won't mean they have to admit they didn't perform as expected.

Merc sold 40% of mclaren shares back to mclaren.
martin whitmarsh believed merc still owned a further 11%
its not like they only supplied engines they have had a substantial investment in f1 for a very long time
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/mar/18/mercedes-mclaren-shares-formula-one

I'ts not like they have only been involved in f1 for 3 years.

why do RBR get a seat with ferrari and mclaren when there involvement in f1 is far shorter than mercedes ? it makes no sense

Double world champions and backing 4 cars, plus been in F1 for something like 15 years. Car manufacturers [not including Ferrari] come and go in F1, have done for years.
Mercedes seem to think buying a World championship winning team gets them preferential treatment from Bernie, Bernie is a little bit sharper than that. Yes Merc have been supplying engines but not for free, they have made money on it with very little risk to themselves.

who will be suppyling engines in 2014 if mercedes leave?

ferrari and renault? PURE dont seem like they will make it , i cant imagine cosworth wanting the expense?

i guess its a step closer to the single spec series f1 is edging towards anyway

I've always thought that once Mercedes decided to set up their own team (OK, buy Brawn F1 out) and eventually leave McLaren that they'd do a Ferrari/Renault (of the past) and Mercedes and make their own engines. I think Ron and Martin would love to elevate McLaren to the Ferrari/Renault/Mercedes level of a team making its own cars AND engines.

Either that or tempt VW/Porsche into F1 with the new engine rules. Considering Chevrolet's recent deal with Manchester United to sponsor the shirts in a few years could we see Chevrolet, or some other GM subsidiary, come into F1 as a way of promoting their cars in Europe and Asia?

The fact that McLaren have yet to even hint at a future engine supplier once their Mercedes deal ends makes me think they might try and develop their own engines. McLaren wouldn't want to have to pay for Mercedes engines, which I think they would have to do if they wanted to keep running Mercedes engines in their cars. That and McLaren's road car operations mean the boys from Woking have some experience of making engines. Yes it is a big leap from road car engines to F1 engines but it might be enough for McLaren to have a go. :)

Still trying to quantify your statement that Red Bull have been involved for less time than Mercedes.

which was still jaguar in 2004? which is not something like 15 years?

mercedes supplying engines since 1995
owned a 51% stake in mclaren for 10 years
Bought the brawn team in 2009

I doubt mercedes have made any money from F1 and mclaren and force india dont even pay for their engines? (force india definitely dont)

with FI's money troubles Its probably helping them stay in f1

Red Bull were backing Sauber in 1995, we continued putting money into F1 until we bought our own team. Red Bull were not getting paid for engines etc, just putting money in. That is why we get a better slice of the pie.

how are mercedes making money on engines?

mclaren get them for free for over 10 years?
force india dont pay for engines for awhile now

they have made just as much investment into f1 as redbull have

Very few people have got rich from F1 and i wouldnt see mercedes as one of them
