Surely Merc will cut Lewis out from a lot of technical development meetings this year and will prioritise George for the 2024 season?

Yes. If the Merc is sub par again I think it will be a rubbish season to be a Hamilton fan/a write off which is a shame.

If it's still only the third or fourth fastest car and Lewis and Merc know he is moving to Ferrari in 25 I imagine himself and his side of the garage will be mentally checked out this season.

As you say, he might get cut out of a lot of the technical/dev stuff as well and be left in the dark.

They'll be some phasing out, sure, but we've not seen other cases of leaving teammates result in an obvious lack of support. Ultimately Merc want to get the best results and the best package on track. They may shift focus to George but Lewis and George don't seem to have particularly different preferences.

I thought he was going to end his career at Merc and had missed the boat of his dream of joining Ferrari given his age. Going to be strange seeing him in red.

Can't see this helping either of them really, very unlikely Ferrari will win Lewis another championship and can't see Lewis improving the team greatly in what will probably be a couple of seasons with them before he retires?

I think this move is for Lewis and only Lewis. He's mentioned before he'd like to drive for Ferrari, the odds of beating Max/RBR this and next year are low, he's not got that many good years left (From his own personal standard, not us mortals)

Why not go and enjoy it for what it is, I hope it caps a wonderful career for him. Only thing that might sour the experience is whether Ferrari and Lewis can successfully work together. It could go all sorts of wrong very quicky.

When this is likely officially confirmed this evening, I'm really going to struggle with my allegiances!
Ever since the late 90s I have been a McLaren fan so always regarded Ferrari as 'the enemy', and now Lewis will be driving for them

Yep. I think he knows RB will likely be the fastest car for 24 and 25. They really nailed the regs and have arguably one of (if not the )fastest driver(s) as well. Winning a championship whilst not being in a Red Bull will likely be very difficult before the regs change again.

Staying with Merc is no more of a guarantee of getting a championship winning car than going to Ferrari is. Like most racing drivers, driving for the Ferrari F1 team is likely on his list of things to do/dreams so he probably thought why not fulfill that and have a change.

I'd love to see Lewis have a go at Lemans too in a 499. How epic would that be?

He's spoke about Ferrari before in his younger days, now is definitely the time really if they are willing to pay him.

Lewis will almost certainly be paying them in terms of net return after all the **** his name will sell and all the sponsorship and ad revenue that comes with his name.

When you think about this; its a fairly stunning indictment of how Hamilton feels about Mercedes chances of returning to the top if he's willing to gamble on joining a team that haven't won a title in 17 years and have all the strategic inclination of a chicken in a minefield
