Mountain Biking

Regarding Dropper Post sizes - I've worked out what diameter I need (just read the specs of the frame / stock post from the Boardman site) however I'm unsure on the height.

I can't think of any reason to buy the shorter travel 100mm version over the 125mm. Is it just there for someone relatively short / or a tall bike frame where the full height of the 125mm would be too much for a base position even if the post was in the frame as low as possible?

Begbie, I feel sorry for you. When are you moving back to MTB mecca?

The plan is to move back after my stint in Cyprus if I get my way. I really miss it up there, it just feels like home.

Whenever I'm in Cornwall I'm amazed at some of the coast footpaths, they must be heaving with tourists in Summer but the rest of the year...

They can be good for a bit of x-country. They descents are shorter than they seem when walking it though, also it can be busy at times and it causes it to be a bit dangerous. Also the weather, if the weather is crap multiply it on the cliff side. Also you're not allowed bikes there, altough some old dear has only mentioned it to me once. And I just kicked her off the cliff....so.

All the new 11 speed XT is out to buy now I seen.

Finally get rid of my gxp bb. When i get the moolah going 11 speed coutesy of xt. Not bothered shimano dont do a narrow wide, lost faith in narrow wide :-p

Really tempted by the new Shimano XT groupset.

Just seen that photo Ichabod. Is that the Shan 27?

Looking good Juggy! From my understanding it lowers the BB and alters the rest of the geo then..

Is anyone with a Rockshox Reverb 125mm able to do me the kind favour of confirming the length between the bottom of the collar (ie as low as it could possibly be mounted in the frame) to the rails? Thanks!

Can't find the exact measurement anywhere, it looks like it would be about 175mm? But I don't want to just guess, order the 125mm and then realise it's a little tall. I want to end up in the situation described in that Team Robot blog where I can actually move the whole post up and down rather than having to have it jammed as low as possible.

Tested my current saddle at full height like I'd want it for flat riding, currently have about 200mm between the collar and the seat rails. So I think I've got plenty of wiggle room, just want to play it safe.

I've got a 125mm reverb, cant be arsed to measure it but on trail days i have it around 2 inch out the frame, on uplift days i have it so the collars around 1/2-3/4 inch from frame.

Due to not being that good on a bike i prefer to have my seat well out the way on uplift days so i can get my arse over the rear tyre easier when im on steeper terrain than comfortable with! Though its only happened on a handful of occasions where i've felt im going over the bars. Mainly rock n roll at bike park wales!

To get maximum pedal stroke i have to have it around 2 inch out the frame for the ofd trail ride.

You mean too slow? She didnt quite make the landing she was aiming for there ;)

On a side note, being as I ****ged BPW off I got off me bum and rode there from my house, up over Mountain Ash, went down Dai Hard, decided to send the road gap with no pedalling just momentum.. Came up a ever so slightly short.. That was the problem, the problem was the stupid jagged rock which caught my wheel and made it go bang and buckled it lol! :D

Although I did have more fun ont he way home riding down the old Mountain Ash dragon downhill track :D

Reverb snip

How tal are you and what bike do you ride (and what size?)

Don't take Team Robot's articles too seriously. He often makes valid points, but he's purposefully outspoken and often satirical / confrontational (a breath of fresh air in the MTB industry in other words).

I just linked it to take a pop at thewanted, because he's on an incredibly large bike for his height + coupled it with a 150mm reverb + got it slammed (all the ppoints team robot was making in other words :D )

Haha, the Medium Aeris has an effective TT of 620mm, reach of 444 and a wheelbase of 1189.

That's a fair bit bigger than the Large Santa Cruz Nomad :p

(it's not a criticism, if it works for you, that's all that matters)

Naw i did mean too fast, i didnt think a woman would clear that so they would be looking for the middle bit to land on rather than the back end of the whole jump.

If it were a bloke then yeah, too slow.

she hooked up on the first jump - which made her either think a) she wasnt going to make even the short double so put a bunch of cranks or b) i need to put a bunch of cranks in to clear the tripple

either way she took off all unpumped on the takeoff (from the extra cranking) and was in no mans (or womans :) ) land(ing) - looks like she actually got away with the landing pretty well but the suspension rebound bounced her OTB

5'10, but only have a 29" leg. Have a Boardman Pro-fs 650B in medium/18"
With saddle raised it's 200mm from collar to rails, so I think the 125mm dropper should be fine. Just nervous of spending so much and getting it wrong!

Was already taking the Team Robot articles with a big pinch of salt. But the points were definitely spot on in that article, I certainly don't want to be in a position where I've got a dropper post that is too tall!
