MR2 or MX5

Right, I should be able to give you some proper opinions as I've had 2 MR2's and an MX-5.

MX5. Don't buya 1600 (post H plate at any rate) as it's got a pathetic 88bhp and is properly for the gayers, grannies and assorted transsexuals. G/H plate 1600's (uk cars) don't have a cat and aren't strangled down bystupid emissions laws and are nearly as rapid as the 1800. The 1800 is the one to have really. Spec doesn't really matter and it won't particularly depreciate at the money you're looking at. Not the best time of year to buy mind. If you can find one, a 1600BBR turbo would be nice, but I suspect more £2500+

Mr2 Mk1. FOr £1500 you'll get a MINT mk1 with NO rust unlike what Mr Fox thinks - mine is 21 and has no rust as that has all been choped out and nice metal replaced. Rattles and squeaks are absolute minimum and I will iron those out one saturday what I can be arsed. Probably even get a super-charged T-Bar for your 2k - mental.

MR2 Mk2. Ignore the phase 1's, tiny brakes and other foibles that upset the car, plus mostly thrashed to death by now. If you aren't an experienced driver in fast, turbo cars, avoid the tubby until you've gotten properly used to a nice rev 3.

My money would go on the Mk1 S/C T-bar but I'ma Mk1 geek. The sensible money is on the MX5. Get an 1800, look for the iS spec and be fussy, don't buy a Eunos, don't get it in white and don't buy without service history, there are loads of them out there so take your time and get a nice one.

Not only that, it's generally not a nice car.

Ready for the flames ;)

I'll hazard a guess and say you've never driven an MX-5 or any other proper car. They handle like they are on rails, look very very good, the world's best selling roadster AND all for £2k.

Just so we can guage where your opinion is formed, what do you drive? And I mean own and drive, not what daddy lets you drive...

Am I not allowed to have an opinion on the way a car looks? It's horrible.

You make it sound like I'm some spoilt rich boy for some reason

I like the way you assume I've never driven a proper car, you don't know me.

For looks they are equal, the newer mr2 I prefer though

Err...looks horrible...riiiiiiiight. The OP wants a 2-seater sports car, and has narrowed the choice to the MR2 and MX5 so he must appreciate the aesthetics of both - either that or he doesn't care. The 5 offers drop-top motoring and excellent handling whilst the 2 n/a offers mid-engined fun and excellent handling and the 2 turbo offers the opportunity to view the delights of rural England's hedges and ploughed fields whilst spinning in a centrafugal manner.

If the OP was asking about colour matching it to his manbag and whether the drop-top would mess his hair, maybe how it looks to everyone would matter. As it it, the OP isn't worried about his manicure (I hope...) and is more concerned about how they compare driving-wise. Therefore I wondered where you ahd formed your opinion and simply pre-empted (possibly harshly) any retort saying how you drive an S2000 or such-like.

Mk1 MR2 is a great fun car to drive, I always have a look to see whats for sale. Nearly bought one a few months ago, was outbid by £10.

They are dangerously addictive. They have a geek following and you soon become obsessive. I am about to spend a good chunk of cash getting a pro respray. That said, I laid the '2 up in August, straight after the ring trip. Since then it's maybe done 20 miles and it simply walked it's MOT! 21 years young.

/edit: The band seems to be growing:p

I used to have a Helious Blue Tbar. :)

Wow, I have learnt the ways of the car pros then. I'm not allowed to dislike it because of the looks.

You said it was generally not a nice car - not that you didn't like the looks.

This goes against almost universal opinion that the MX-5 is not just a good car, but an excellent one.

a 2k S/C would probably be a bit scabby.

Oh and the mk1 pictured has had the front bumper resprayed (and not terribly well if the finish in the picture is anything to go by) Obviously don't know whether that was to cover up stone chips or whether it's been pranged but the lack of stickers is always a giveaway.

Blue, white or red are a bad colour for MK1s. Gun metal Silver or Black is what to look for:cool:

Its get an NA Mk1 Hard top(No sunroof) due to being lighter then the Targer tops and a hell of a lot lighter then the Supercharged ones.

Ive heard people say the S/C understeers a fair bit more aswell

Bah what do you know. (Says someone with 2 red, a blue and a white one in the household :p)

Mica blue is a lovely colour on them, was my favorite of all the ones I've had. Red look good when they're actually red rather than pink and white ones look proper 80s. Vix's is going to look awesone when it's finished (Currently white with black wheels, plan is to do the roof black at some point as well as maybe a few other little details)

Guess it's more that red/white and mica blue are by far the most common colours so you get more scabby looking ones in those colours whereas anything else is more unusual and more likely to have been cared for.
