*** MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition - How To Unlock The Power ***

Wow you must have some good cooling! How many monitors are you using? Have you got a side fan intake blowing on it?

1 monitor which is why idle temps will be normally lower due to lower clocks.

The cooling is pretty poor atm as I haven't had the time to rearrange the insides of the case yet and most fans are taken out. There's one intake on the front panel, one exhaust at the back and another exhaust on side panel by the graphics card (following Marine's advice).

Which card is this? Brand, model .etc

Obviously the same as the one being discussed :p

Thanks for pointing that out Krugga.
Its running in a cosmos case with the stock cooling at the mo, (1 intake 3 out) soon to be modded though and the stock coolermaster fans are getting replaced with 1 180mm Silverstone Air Penetrator intake fan, 1 120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon intake fan 1 180mm silent fractual design out take fan and 2 120/140mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon out take fans so i hope to see just alittle improvement on the temps i have now.

Oh dear.. :p

Have you been able to sort out your issues with the card? the bad company 2 issues .etc
Those issues sorta put me off getting one =/

No, I haven't sorted any of the issues out, yet. I need to put graphics card testing on hold for now as I've got a few other issues to sort out first, one of them being the cooling in my case, cable management, etc., reseating the HSF of my CPU and finishing the other build.

I will however try and test the card with Power setting set to +20%, 1.2V core voltage, +5mV to memory and AUX voltage. I wish ScottiB had responded to my request regarding safe voltages for this card but it seems he has since disappeared from the thread.

You guys who get it past 880MHz, do you have Win7 64-bit? Do you have SP1 installed?

Yes, I'm on Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I can get the card past 880MHz at stock volts but I experience stability issues in BFBC2.

Thanks for pointing that out Krugga.

You must remember that the card will exhaust majority of the hot air inside the case so try and create an active cooling system that will blow the hot air outside the case before it starts heating up your CPU (unless you're watercooling in which case it wouldn't matter that much).

Okay read from the Unigine thread that there's a version of MSI Afterburner that unlocks voltage control properly on the card, now we're cooking (not literally).

I did however already remove SP1 as well so have no clue if that affected the outcome or not.

Got the card to run now at 900/1325 which is max of what Afterburner will let you. Voltage control from Afterburner 1179 compared to stock 1149 so not much of a lift needed.

Upped my Unigine from 1060, which was achieved at 880/1300, to 1080 so not a massive increase but something at least.

Guess the next step is flashing it with the custom bios then. :p

Oh and as a response to the heat values, still running at 40C idle and 62C full load. Have an old Antec Sonata Proto with an exhaust fan running at 1000rpm at the back.

Here is the latest Afterburner beta in question, make sure to set Low Leakage gpu with this card to control voltages correctly.

I can run the card at stock volts in Unigine Heaven 2.5 for a couple of hours at 900/1375 but it wouldn't be stable in longer sessions of BFBC2.

If anyone has both this card and BFBC2, please test your card in there and post your results.

Flashing with the custom BIOS will remove all overclocking limits so it's highly recommended to do it if you're into getting the most of your card.

Hey Krugga is there any perticular point in the game where it crashes?
Also what drivers are you on?
Is there anything else that causes it to crash? what type of crash are we talking about a crash to desktop or a bsod?

Usually after a round so when clocks go down from full speed to whatever the medium are. It might happen during the game, though. I only play multi so hard to say what causes it really, it doesn't happen due to the engine overload or anything like that. Worked fine on my 5850 at the same settings, as I pointed out before.

I had similar problems with my previous MSI 5850 Twin Frozr II, it would let me clock quite high but would crash in BFBC2 anyhow.

The crash freezes the PC entirely but there were some CTDs too.

I'm on the latest beta drivers, 11.5b with CAP3.

Ok well just finished testing and it plays fine for me.
One difference though i was using 11.4 because i have some unrelated issues with 11.5

Hmm thats interesting, I would have expected it to exhaust most of its heat out the rear and intake cool air from the case, hence why adding a side INTAKE would be better (especially as I'd have to use the lower of the 2 side intakes) but you're saying this isn't the case? I'll have to try it both ways and see what happens to the temps.

Another thing is for some odd reason i cant run this card through hdmi because for some unknown reason it doesn't fit my screen right and there is no option for me to fix it. i tried different resolutions and settings but where the resolution would change the screen size remained the same so idk.

I may be wrong but i had the same problem, all i did was change the name of the HDMI channel to PC through the TVs menus. If you have a monitor then i dont know......

Airflow inside your case + exhausting the warm air = Best profit :)

The air will find its way inside the case if you just have your cables tucked away neatly and have a proper "channel" through which the air can run its course.
Got a cheap Antec case that doesn't even have the option of a front intake fan, but it doesn't need it either because the holes in the front are big enough to just let air in. I only have two fans inside the case, not counting the PSU, one cooling the Noctua block on the i7 and one at the back of the case blowing hot air out.
This simple setup, with no cables and a good airflow, keeps the CPU at 52C, the GPU at 62C, PSU at 58C and mobo at 45C even after 8h of Witcher2 on max settings. Idle/movie watching everything is 40 degrees or less.

tl;dr version: more air into the case doesn't matter if it's not going out. :)

What crashing? In what games? Have no issues in 4 different games after swapping drivers.
Are you running 11.5b Catalyst? If not, give them a go, had lots of issues with previous versions.

freezing so that i have to restart the pc
always 30 mins to an hour in game with all the ones iv played since i had it a week a go
dirt 3
crysis 2
BC2
fallout 3

will try the 11.5b now
