Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I want to get a racer. I need to sell my current gear though which is proving tricky. I've hardly touched it over the past year - bored with it.

Where did you sell your stuff?

Sold it on ebay. I do miss the phantom 3 had loads of fun with it.
but when you try racing fpv its just takes it to another level.

General question. Have any of you experienced people's attitudes being different based on the size of a quad? Do people get more suspicious / angry about a larger slower quad, with a plastic body compared to a smaller racing, 'hobby' or more toy-like quad, with no body?

Thanks for that, very useful! Looking at your second video, the camera quality actually looks alright on the x8c. I'm sure it is the same 2mp camera as my (fake) x5c-1 but it looks less jelly.

Maybe I'll upload a video of my flight today, if my battery ever charges up.

Hi, the camera is OK for what it is I suppose, nothing to write home about. It doesn't cope well with changes in light conditions and I'm getting some weird horizontal 'lines' now and again, almost like interference rather than anything jello related. In fact, after balancing the props and carrying out the prop washer mod, any jello which was present before has all but gone. The camera is identical to the one fitted to the X5, they've just shoved it in an orange ball type housing on the X8C.

I got my new Prophet Sports LiPo charger yesterday, it's awesome. A full charge at 2amps on my 2000 mAh batteries takes about 45-50 mins compared to the OEM chargers 220 mins. If I want a fast charge it's capable of charging at 3amps in about half an hour. Well worth £20 I think.

Lesson learned today though - was itching to fly this afternoon on a family day out to a local park. But the wind had picked up considerably. I thought if anything it would be good for practice, having to cope with gusts of wind. But at one point, a really strong gust caught the quad and whisked it upwards and sideways towards a tree. I panicked a wee bit and tried to correct it's direction but the wind was too strong. So rather than have it end up in a tree, I elected to cut the power and see if it dropped in height that way. It did. Straight onto the only concrete in the area, an old paddling pool. Hit the ground with a huge smack and I feared the worst but got away with just breaking a rotor guard. Bit of a brown trouser moment!!

It appears that some idiot has managed to get close enough to actually make contact with a plane landing at Heathrow :(

Unbelievable that anyone would think that getting that close was ever a good idea!

Lesson learned today though -

Good decision, I've lost two up trees! For comparison to your video, I did a bit of low and high rate flying today. It wasn't as bad as I remembered but yeah, the scenes with both bright and dark lighting (basically every quadcopter video with ground and sky in it) the camera does give in. On a quad copter that costs about £35 you can't complain though!

Also I see some absolute cretin managed to crash into a plane at heathrow today. The first time I believe? Are they trying to get r/c 'drones' made illegal!?

It was only a matter of time. With daily reports of wreckless flying my only surprise is that it has taken this long.

If the police can find the wreckage they stand a chance of tracking the operator.

How would they do that? Nearly every RC craft is unregistered in this country, nothing to tie it to the person who flew it, apart from possible DNA/Fingerprints and then that would rely on them being on the database. Or operator stupidity (video on youtube, return to if lost label ect)

I have a Phantom 4 arriving tomorrow.

Look to do my licence in the coming months.

Regulation is needed, that's for sure.

It's massively regulated already, just not enforced. Apparently there isn't even enough money in the public coffer to provide welfare to disabled people, let alone trying to police something like rpas.

Having to do a lot of research etc into flying overseas and one country that's got it spot on is Ireland. You have to register your drone with the IAA which is a simple and actually quite well designed online login/form. You can have multiple UASs registered, including their serial numbers etc, and when applying for flight permission you select which UAS it's with, use the embedded map to find long/lat (which also shows restricted areas), and provide details of what you'll be doing and when.

Was super easy to use and also quite useful. Can't imagine it would cost any more than 100k with a big web agency to provide a similar service.

What happens if you don't register?

Absolutely nothing I would imagine.

That looks like exactly what we need Russ. It's >1kg so means that all the toy drones and racers would be exempt but it would capture Phantoms, Inspires, Solos etc.
