Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Can I ask where you lot fly? I mean do you have somewhere that's drone friendly (Club etc) or do you fly in the a local park or even a farmers field?

I really want to start fly but I'm worried about hitting someone of something while learning.

J.

I wanted to "do it properly" and join a club but the three RC flying clubs near me were a bust. 2 didn't reply to several emails and the third were very anti multirotor (I hate the D word). So I just park fly, but only micros these days. Don't want to risk it with 250 sized race quads, nearly all London parks are too busy on nice days

I would only fly in a park either with a spotter or if its really deserted (even then, people can appear out of nowhere)
It's difficult avoiding dog walkers and you need to watch for dogs chasing the quad. Kids do that as well...
If you are learning try and find a football pitch or similar and get there when no-one is about. You want to be somewhere with short grass to easily find a ditched quad

EDIT: watch you also don't infringe any local airport space
Useful site and there is an app also

Shouldn't really be flying near people anyway.

Farmers fields occasionally, big parks (either just a big woodland type park or something else) football fields work also, or cricket pitches for that matter.

Yeah I would be flying a 250, although I do have a smaller quad to.

I've asked my local school (My old one in fact, just down the road) but was faced with the "insurance cover" issue, I looked into it and found that I could join the BMFA which would cover me, but my reply was never answered. I do have a large area not far from me I could use, in fact @The_Abyss has posted pictures of it, lol.

Yeah, should be clear I wouldn't fly near people, it's the people walking into my flying zone which I haven't noticed I was talking about.

On the rare occasion I fly on my own, I'll make sure I'm either sat in a spot that only has minimal areas where people can miraculously appear, or I'd fly with a screen as opposed to goggles. Generally I'll fly with a mate and we'll take turns so at least he can spot.

Now started a role that's going to be about 50% of my job doing purely drone surveying work - aiming for getting my PfCO within the next 12 months!

Had a Phantom (hoping it's a 4) shipped to me (arrived in the office today but I was working at home doh!) and am getting an iPad mini to go with it next week hopefully - looking forward to getting out there and seeing what's possible!

Finally managed to catch a nice sunset from my backyard earlier today.

Didn't come out too bad I have to say, think I've finally got the hang of the exposure setting. Used the lens hood which helped ease the glare. Didn't use any processing either and pretty pleased with the pic.

Yeh I was just outside in my backyard having a vape and thought oooh nice colours in the sky so grabbed my mavic and took her up. Took quite a few pics panning around and this was the best one I took. Played with exposure settings so some came out too bright/washed out etc.

Ah look, another drone user who the law doesn't apply to!

Indeed. Had someone flying one down our estate over the houses the other day....

Hell, a local micro flight business flies over the houses sometimes, I assume they have different rules despite them and it weighing probably weighing 100kilo

I'm well aware of when I'm breaking the law :p 95% (tru faks) of people break laws they don't see as important.

Use your noggin, have a spotter and fly safe

Oh look it's dis86 with nothing to add.

For your info I only took it up that high to take a pic and that was it. I didn't go whizzing around and my neighbours are absolutely obsessed with it. They love seeing it in the air and no i don't take pics or videos of them in it unless they want me to.

Well I clearly have added something. That your actions are illegal whether you're taking a crap picture or not.

Took the Mavic out with me on the motorbike this morning for a ride around Suffolk. I prefer the early morning / evening when the light's softer, but it was still beautiful out there today.

Very nice shots there Abyss :). Did you use filters?? Or just some post processing??

I'm hoping that soon I'll be able to get better looking shots than what I'm getting at the moment.

I rarely use filters for stills. I did try using a polarising filter for a while but gave up. I just do a bit of post processing, mostly to make up for the shortcomings of the Mavic's camera. Just a bit of clarity in the sky and raising shadow on the land is normally all it takes. Plus a slight boost to the saturation, because it is the internet and everyone seems to expect unrealistically vibrant colour!
