My MR2 Turbo MPG Record!

For information

When the orange fuel light comes on you can get from York to Newcastle as long as you do 56mph with all the electrics turned off.

(guess who was driving home at 1am with no petrol stations open!)

Could it be you by anychance ;)

My Getz will do 350-400 on a 9 Gallon tank... though I have been able to get from Loughborough to Stoke with it on empty before... and the warning light only came on as I pulled into the Tesco's :D

My trip computer is accurate to within +/- 0.5mpg. I've checked it several times.

Except it doesn't, proof of which can be found if you reset the average speed recorder whilst travelling at an indicated 70mph - it doesn't show 70mph, it shows about 65, which is on-par with what my GPS reckons.

Thats because GPS only measures your speed accurately across the surface of the planet, not up or down hills.

On a level surface, the GPS speed reading will be 100 per cent accurate - but that's not the case on hills because it measures your speed across the planet and cannot compensate for changing altitude. ;)

I win, 43.2 mpg Plymouth - Cheltenham for the 2nd RR day \o/

Driving to work on cornish roads - 680 miles to a tank full (well less than, the reserve light flickered and I filled it up ;) Beat that!)

I once, as a test, cruised at 55/60 on the motorways (when it was quiet, anyway).

It was actually really nice to go slow for a change, just sat there with the music on, the big 'ol four pounding away and the whole car thrumming gently. Very relaxing :)

i agree with that :) , nowadays i stick to 70 on the motorway. It's so relaxing just driving along enjoying the drive, listening to the radio, not needing to worry about traffic as much and making the most of my fuel. Unless you are driving for 100's of miles and there's no traffic jams at all. The time you save driving at 70 and 80 etc etc isn't that much.

Enjoying driving isn't always about foot flat on the gas all the time, i enjoy just relaxed crusing as much as some late night stints on quiet b roads at night when i go home from work.

I'm well aware of that, thanks very much.

The time you save by travelling 80mph instead of 70mph is really nothing and therefore not worth the risk.

Speeding on the motorway is boring anyway, speeding around country lanes is much more fun. Not that I have tried either, the speed of my vehicle is measured in knots anyway.

By the same token, the petrol you save by travelling at 70 instead of 80 in nothing and not really worth it.

Believe me, wanging a mobile tanker around country lanes is fun. :D

But my mondeo doesn't get about 25mpg anyway, I live in the country so its basically town driving but with tractors and sheep instead of vespas and trafficlights. :(

I have said this before but I am pretty sure accelerating is what gives me a buzz.

Constant 100mph is dead boring, doing 0-100mph as quickly as possible maybe with a corner or two on the way is fun.

Exactly, I tend to like getting boring things out of the way so driving faster does that as motorway driving is boring :p

Id be suprised if it wasnt a significant difference, the aerodynamics at pretty big jump from 70 to 80mph Certainly cant be discredited it as 'nothing' with no effect to MPG

Although this is why i like the current speed limit on motorways, means joe bloggs etc uses less fuel so theres more available for enthusiasts and doesnt dry the planet out quite as quick.

Has anyone with a MPG gauge got data for 70 speed rather than 80.

Neither the MR2 or CTR returned any real noticable MPG improvement when driven at 70 as opposed to 90mph.
I think the CTR gets about 20, maybe 30 miles more from a tank, it's certainly not a lot of difference (especially as it sits at high revs on a motorway anyway)
