My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

Got mine this morning - absolutely love it! Great picture - played NFSMW on it and it looks great - takes a bit of getting used to having such a huge screen. Also tried a DVD on it without any problems. I've also got Sky fed into it via the S-Video input and it's certainly watchable provided I'm not 2 inches away from the screen. Really happy with it - and a great price from OC too!

Have not noticed any ghosting but have now noticed that some DVD's display visible compression artifacts (usually in the background to a scene where the background looks out of focus).

This is more a limitation of the DVD's resolution (720x576) as the 2405 is such a high quality display it is making them apparent. Does not seem to be anyway to get rid of them either unless you sit a long way back from the screen or turn down the brightness to a very dark level within the DVD software player.

WinDVD7 gives a stunning picture on this TFT but the compression artifacts are still slightly visible. Putting the TFT into 800x600 gets rid of them totally but the picture then looks a little blocky due to the scaling.

peeps whould either use that scaling guide for pcs posted in the first pages of this thread or xbmc if they have an xbox and are in the know to scale dvds either way makes things much more better

After using this screen for a few days, i have not had any problems at all. FEAR looks beautiful, even though its scaled up from 1024x768 and runs at 90fps with no apparent lag or ghosting. B+W2 looks stunning aswell, with neither of the above problems either, although its not exactly a high paced game.

The stuck sub-pixel in the bottom right is still there, i've tried flicking it, massaging it, but its still there. Fortuntely, its dead small so in normal use, i don't see it.

I ordered mine this morning from OcUK, hopefully be here on Monday? praying it doesn't have any dead pixels or any other problems ;)

Anything to look out for when installing? Using an AGP X800XT just now and plan to use my current Sony 21" CRT as a second monitor, the card has a normal VGA and DVI? output, what output would be best for the Dell?

I'm also thinking it would be prudent to uninstall my graphic card driver before plugging in the monitor and I'll install the new Cat 5.12's after that, good idea yes/no?

Stick the Dell on the DVI, Thats what I did and I upgrade my graphics drivers to the omega version based on the cat 5.12.

Im using a sapphire x800 GTO2 flashed to X850pe spec. Everythings great!!

doubt it

 :p

my 6800nu can play farcry 1920*1200 i dont think your setup will strugle much

ted34 - yes, i get black lines as well.

ic1mate - x2 @ 2.8ghz, 2gbram, 7800gtx 512mb, dx9, fsaa2x, r_anisotropic 16. worst map in terms of fps is carentan american spawn, wher eit drops about 35-40ish. other than that its the usual, 60fps-70fps. even 100+ in close quarters in carentan. nvidia control panel is set at quality, no optimizations on, fsaa & af set to ''application preference''

Does everyone else get black lines at the top and bottom of this monitor when watching dvd widescreen films

Yup, you will do. The monitor's aspect ratio is 16:10 whereas DVDs aren't. Worst case is 2.35:1 films. You would need two of these monitors stuck side-by-side to minimise the black bars on those films.
