My new Samsung 26" LCD

Just a quick update on my quest for an LCD TV. Ive orderd the Sammy LER51BD I think this one looks better than the 41 range. after looking around for the new LM models they are too hard to find at a decent price and they dont come with freeview.

After doing some calculations I think buying this one will be better in the long run i.e when I move house, FreeView etc. Got it at a decent price in a store, paid £940 with a free home cinema kit (cheap'ish one). Had to bring out the best of the haggling skillz mind :D

Samsung haven't rang me yet for delivery but a fresh batch came in yesterday so shouldn't be too long before I get it :) i'll post some pics when it arrives.

What surround sound do you guys use with your samsungs?

Denon AVR1906 receiver (£250-£300 online)
Mordaunt-Short Genie AV speaker package (£600 in black, £700 in silver online)
QED Silver Anniversary speaker cable (£4.50/m online)
Alphason Aragon AG54/2 hifi stand

Everything wall-mounted. :p

Thats what I thought about the xbox. I havn't got anything special as of yet for my sound system for things like dvd's and xbox, but will be getting a 5.1 system with optical so i can.

thats the problem i have, i have an excellent sony dvd home theatre setup, model slips my mind with active sub and such, i am thinking of putting it on the bay, are there any hi-def home theatre kits out yet??

I would prefer sony.

Why?
Sticking to one make due to 'Customer Loyalty' or 'Good Experiances with them', will only limit you to what you can have.
Often, mixing makes for a Home Cinema setup can provide you with better features/performance, for less cost than sticking with one manufacturer only.

hey up boomam,

ok i need to find a amp, that is dts compat, with at least 3 optical in, and 3 analogue in.
The reason i sitck with sony is i like the look of their all in 1 kits so to speak. not inc dvd player lol. I am looking at a couple of the samsung upscaling dvd players

Datamonkey

I have aSony STR-DB940, which I think has at least what yur looking for, real quality DD/DTS 5.1 amp , a few years old now but look for the same kind of range and you will get a quality product.

I had this along with 4*AE bookshelf speakers , 1 AE centre channel and REL sub to go with my Sony HDD/DVD recorder (with freeview) and Sammy HD850 DVD player ( both which upscale and Sammy has HDMI also which looks a real treat

pats

Which size of screen did you go for, was it 26 or 32", as even though you bought from highstreet still think you got ripped off slightly, am sure huge highstreet electrical chain are listing LE26R51BD at £799, if you got 32" then you got around £160 off lol - and how the h**l did you haggle that much lol

Ok right, now I am thinking of getting a upscaling DVD player and the Samsung DVD HD850 look quite good and recieved a good review, what do you guys think to this? Now what I am a little confused on is I read somewhere HD tv's upscale automatically to its native resolution, is this right, so would say a dvd put through a standard dvd player be upscaled anyway by the TV? I understand the reason to buy a upscaling DVD player is that it may upscale better than the TV, but in the Samsungs case is it worth it, or am I totally wrong? Also is it possible for PC's to do the upscaling?

Right I am sure its possible for a pc to do it but you would need your dvd software player to be programmed to do it - this is my best guess anyway.

I am not entirely sure a sd DVD player would be upsclaed when plugged into a HDTV, but if this is true, you are still using an analogue feed to the HDTV, ie a scart lead, with the Sammy HD850 / 950 and many newer dvd players / recorders they use pure digital signal - ie HDMI / DVI , ie no need to change from dvd digital signal to analogue to go down scart cable only to be turned into digital again to be displayed on *** TV - its digital all the way so no loss of quality . I would also guess that 90 notes for a decent alll digital player like the 850 is worth it when yur paying 600 + for the tv - also leaving your RGB scart connector for your Sky box or whatever.

You may have noticed I havent actually answered your qestion lol, to my mind I really dont think that an SD player with the same dvd in it would look anywhere as good as an upscaling one, however as I havent actually tried i cant really comment.

The other difficulty is that you would also have to some how adjust the results to take into account the quality of each type of connector you use - ie hdmi socket for the upscaling dvd player and scart for sd dvd player, if you get me. Real world results only, ie you wouldnt ever connect the upscaling one to the scart as it would be pointless in my opinion

Hey Hugo,

I got the 26" paid £700 for it off the high street, but it was a case of i wanted it now. Plus no one is in during the day time to take del.

Also i prefer to have face to face contact when it goes wrong ;) lol

Will look into the sony kit you have suggested,

I was looking at the Sony HTSS600 looks good and for that price i cannot really argue. What do you guys think of it?

BooMAM i dont have much to spend really, have spent well over a grand in the last month n a bit lol.

Frank, cheers for that, samsung have some upscaling dvd players with hdmi for around the £160 mark, going to look into those.
