N95 Release

Just got mine now... If anyone else in Coventry is expecting one then sorry, I didnt know where the address was he was looking for!!! :)

I cant find any instructions on the initial charge time thou?!

Hmmm well after much umm'ing and ahh'ing, i decided to buy the phone...after playing around with my uncles last week...i was quite impressed with it. Should have mine with me by tommorrow, bought it from ebay as a sim free model and got a good deal on it compared to other online places.

Just hope im not too disappointed by it but it looks like a pretty nice phone..now just trying to figure out what to do with my P990i :p. Although if i really like the n95 i might sell the p990i. Thankfully i wont have to deal with the silly operator rubbish plus tmobile wont let me upgrade till dec...

whats the easiest way to watch divx/xvid videos on my n95??

Hey all my N95 is arriving tomorrow (T-MOBILE) and i was hoping to copy some divx/xvid videos onto the 2gb micro sd card to watch on the train. Is there a good free media player or conversation software that does the job reliably?

Its has sorted out a lot of the usualy N series problems, its quick, doesnt have memory problems and is generally a solid phone. Of course the battery isnt amazing (but definitely better than the N80). I would definitely go for the N95, the camera is really great, in particular the video quality, and personally I prefer the look of the N95.

From what I have seen on youtube, the video quality seems to be quite shoddy, with video lag distortin the image if you move the camera quickly. Since it#s youtube I can't really comment on the actual quality, but the bendyness is quite disappointing.

Yep if you move the camera quickly there is some lag, but the quality of the image and sound is really excellent bar that and as you said youtube images dont do it justice.

I have had problems with this, I havent tried too hard to find a solution but smartmovie mobile(3.25) doesnt work on the N95 and DivX mobile is impossible to get hold of - the official mobile site never seems to allow you to get in.

Other than that my already itunes formatted mp4 files work fine without a seperate player. And if you convert the divx movies they will work.

I am still holding out for smartmovie mobile/divx mobile to get it sorted for the new symbian OS then it should be able to play files off the bad without conversion (I think, I hope!)

Some thoughts after a week and a half of use.:

For me its one of the best 'phones' I have ever had, it does so much and as long as you keep it charged then this phone with use has few limitations. I was initially excited by the phone and loved it the first few days then got really annoyed with a few issues (I will explain in a bit) but I have accepted them now and am v happy with it. Its more than a phone anyway its a personal communicator or even as Nokia say a 'mobile computer'. Now during my average day I get all my emails instantly, I can go on MSN, make international calls for free, and sometimes use google maps to find my way - all in all its well worth the extra cost.

Gimmick/Negatives

Double slider - the 2nd sliding music functions are a complete waste of time and a total gimmick in my eyes. Each time you slide it out you have to wait for the 3d menu to load up, then you can use the buttons, why not just use the existing buttons on the side of the phone like SE? I use the built in remote control to change tracks anyway so never touch the double slide.

3d Menu - What is the point of this!? Yes it looks cool, but you have to wait a couple of seconds for it to load up which makes it pointless. When you use the phone you want it to work instantly. This feature is merely to show off the phoen to friends or for Nokia to sell the phone.

Battery life - Its weakest point if only it wasnt for this! With a better battery this phone would almost be perfect. I am guessing that Nokia felt some pressure from the 'RAZR effect' and wanted to keep the phone thinner hence, a smaller battery and not impressive battery time. In some defence of Nokia, if you use this just as a 'phone' and not all the extra functions the battery life isnt too bad conversly you dont buy this phone just to use as a phone!

Positives

GPS - Last week this would have gone in the Gimmick category but I have come to work with it and understand that it doesnt work instantaneously (even though that would be nice) When its working it is fantastic - especially when you combine it with google maps - its amazing to see your location moving along on a satellite photo!

Camera - Not totally blown away by this as I was expecting incredible quality for 5mps, nevertheless it does take rather good pictures. The video is excellent (apart from some screen 'tearing' if you pan around quickly).

Email - Really great, now I get emails from all of my email accounts and an indication when a new email comes in, this is a strong positive of the phone for me.

VOIP - Really impressed with this - now I have fee international calls another killer app for this phone. (PS I used Truphone - free International calls and landline calls in the UK until the end of June)

3.5mm jack - At last!

There are more things but i am feeling a little lazy now so that will do! An unlimited data plan is almost essential for this phone, only then you can use all its features to the max.

DOH ! :)

great phone though.

awsome phone, really enjoying mine! loving the maps and screen size and the style is just gorgeous! id love some good apps for it! some already mentioned in our threads seem to be to complex for little return or just far to bland.

Got a good tip I found off another forum:

How do you close programs running in the background?

Hold down the menu key until the task manager appears. Select the application you want to close and press 'c'.

Can also be used for task switching.

Closing programs when not in use is good for your phones memory. (note, that the music player seems to not want to close using the method described above.

yeh n1 thanks.

Has anyone tried and succeeded in setting up WLAN ? I get "no gateway reply" error when trying to browse web via WLAN. I googled it and theres a lot of forum posts of people with the same problem but i dont see a solution. Also, connecting to hidden wlan's, i have no idea how to do that, i had to turn SSID broadcast on to try this out (something i dont want to leave on).

bleh, will try again tommorow :(

my n95 from O2 came with a 1GB card included. But I had brought a couple of 2GB card's just incase prior to getting the unit.

Also for the wireless lan problem do you have mac filtering enabled. I completely forgot I had this enable when I tried to connect my phone to my router so turned it off and away we went.

Now just to find a decent exchange program so I can keep in touch with emails from work. Now that I have everything for the phone I am well impressed with it. So much nicer than the old K750i I had. Menu System although intutive is a little frustrating simply because of the vast amount of options it has. I think this will be a phone I will be happy with for a couple of years until something better comes along.

Just need another battery as It seems to run down fairly quickly. :(
