Would twelve months National Service benefit our society and culture?

But it's not a part time job. It's working for your benefits. What'll happen is you go on it for your giro, do more than hours so basicaly £2 an hour, if you complain they threaten, or take breaks that regular workers have, you'll lose your benefits, and because it's not employement you have no worker rights
 
No state benefits once you've left full time education until you've contributed to the system by completing either a year of National Service (not necessarily just military), completing a twenty four month (paid) apprenticeship or twelve months of employment contributing tax & national insurance.

All of which help you become a contributing member of society if full time education didn't equip you to do so.

You live in a dream world. Another reason we haven't had a large conflict since ww2 is that we don't have massive populations that are trained for war. You give your populations basic training it's 1 step closer and easier to mobilisation. You spent money training, you might as well use the investment
 
Let's not call it national service then call it forced apprenticeship. Leave the military way out of it.

I think to some degree that is a consequence as much as it is a reason - the rise of weapons of mass destruction and the other geopolitical type consequences like increased globalised finance have tended to make large scale conflict less likely which has lead to less demand to have a standing military capability. Which by extension has meant countries are less capable of quickly going to war.

Who mentioned Children?

I don't condone sending people to disaster zones untrained...But I see no harm in sending a 18 year old to a Flood in the lake District in his last two months of service to aid the rescue...

As for the elderly....It could be as simple as keeping them company...anything, not medical care...

You seem to have tailored your response with false rhetoric to somehow reinforce your non argument :p

If things like climate change go as "predicted" having more people prepared for disasters and disaster relief would not be a bad thing and might be useful educationally as well - potentially extreme freak weather events and increased flooding are possible and likewise being drilled in how to respond to things like a terrorist attack could be useful. Also for many people the biggest hurdle is taking the first step so it could better prepare people for going into some careers they otherwise didn't think they could or didn't know how to approach.

It needs some kind of order structure...Maybe just not with the guns....But the assault courses , the PE and the structure and discipline would be good.

I joined the Air Cadets as a kid....On a whim...

Had no interest in the Military or getting a career in the military

Loved every minute of it. Flying planes, Camping, team spirit, Exercise, Night time manoeuvres in the local Park (supported by the police)

Good times...
 
Well if that's the sort of scrutiny it takes for your grand scheme to fall apart it probably wasn't going to work anyway.
 
So we shirk all responsibility from parenting now to the state oficialy. We will fix your kids when they reach 18.

I would not want to live in a country like that, less so than one that has military service. At least that is honest.

IMO 12 months isn't long enough, make it 18 or 24.

More cost effective that way when you consider the cost of kitting them out.
