NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

Is gaming seamless for you too? Are you a proper widescreen gaming convert now? :)

Yep - played HL2 lost coast and HL2 started from the beginning yesterday - no stuttering (but it is an X1900XT with all the settings max'ed out) - or smearing that I could see. Playing at full 1680x1050 of course - also did the same for far-cry and civ iv (not that that has as much going on).

An X1900 XT is my next purchase. ;):D

Do you share igors opinion of the blacks too, are they deep and the colours rich? :)

very dark - if you look at hardocp.com - the yellows/reds are bright - and the black background is very black (and shiny too - but that would probably only be annoying if there is bright lights behind you - which there isnt in my setup). In the winter sun coming sideways into the room over the weekend I could see myself, but that was only when the screen was a uniform colour, otherwise its an excellent monitor - and I've used LCD's at home/work for the last 3-4 years and this is the best so far.

Hi,

Am probably going to be getting this screen when i have enough money. Was just wondering if you lot know if the Ergotron Neo Flex Lcd Arm mentioned in another thread would fit this screen??

It has the VESA mounting so I guess so - the more likely problem depends on your desk and how far away from the wall it would make the screen be since the arm bolts to the desk (so the desk can't go fluish) and the leans the screen towards you. The screen in normal use looks a little low - but I have mine on a computer shelf 7-8" above the desk - and whilst its lower than my 19" VX viewsonic was, its only an inch or so - so the top of the screen is at eye height - if I sit up straight.

I was thinking maybe just to wait for the Nvidia refresh ... this month. Who knows what they will bring on the table this time. Anyhow ... I'm not upgrading my current 7800GTX set-up unless I can expect at least 50% increase in the GPU speed :) ... and not just the benchmark speed, but "real life" gaming performance (as I'm not the big fan of the synthetic benchmarks, anyway). Maybe I would just wait for the next gen of the GPU cards ... not sure

Well, it's the same thing as with the movies. I guess that all of you are watching the movies in 16:9 widescreen format now and switch back to the 4:3 box would be rather unpleasant experience, I suppose. Now, even my office 4:3 LCD looks strange to me, and every morning I have to "adapt" myself to the office screen and somehow I miss the desktop widescreen :( Quite bizzare.

Same here - except work laptop is 1920x1200 resolution - so fitting everything in is more my problem - even though its fitted into a physically bigger area. Old viewsonic vx was 4:3 though, so at least those are now the same aspect ratio.

ATI is planning a prce-slash and I am currently running a 6200 TC as I sold my 7800GT for christmas, so I need a card that can power this monitor asap. :D

lol it's just in my nature, when I pay out a large sum like £420 I always seek constant re-assurance and lot of opinions until i have it in my hands. I'll have it tommorrow with any luck... *rubs hands* :)

Hey Richdog, I'll look forward to hearing your opinions of the NEC :) You seem to be as exacting as me when it comes to parting with money ;) Not that that is a bad thing... but it infuriates everyone I live with!

"So, you bought that NEC yet?"
"Nah, I'm thinking again about the Philips."
"So, you bought that Philips yet?"
"No, I'm having another look at the NEC."

:D

Well ive returned mine today, the high gloss and brightness/glare was to much of an issue which was a shame, think my room layout dosnt help, have a light above and behind me and a window behind me.

Just thought id highlight the issue, if it wasnt for the glossy screen it would have been an excellent monitor, gaming etc was great.

Hmm that's a shame. I have a couple of light sources too, we'll just have to see whether it proves an issue or not.

Well...that's shame. You must be at the very "enlightened" position if it's so much annoying to you. Anyhow, I hope that you will eventually find your perfect monitor one day and be happy with it. :)

If you have light source slightly "behind" the monitor or even above (average ambient room light), I think you should be OK. However, you will probably be the best person to judge that ;) I don't like the office or room ambient lights. I always preferred the desk lamps (at office and at home). It's somehow more pleasant to work with.

Well my computer is right next to my window, but I do have blinds as well as curtains so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. As for internal light sources, I was thinking to just place a lamp on my computer desk behind the monitor, so that way there will be nothing casting light on the screen.

Such a shame I still have a 6200TC though, lol, won't be able to do any widescreen gaming for a couple of weeks till I get a new card. :(

you could always LAP it - like cpu's - to roughen the surface a bit - just leave out the final finest couple of wet and dry sessions :D
