NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

I have phoned back and they seemed to know who I was and wanted my number as I am going to speak with the manager.

How crazy is it to admit that 99.9% of the product has this fault!!!!!

Spoke with the customer services manager - seemed a very nice woman......... but still the same information.........

Basically....... regarding backlight problem

NEC warranty and returns are awaiting response from NEC Japan as to this backlight problem. They are going to see what the problem is, if it can be resolved and even maybe they cant even fix this problem. This problem is occuring with 99.9% of stock and they wont be issuing any returns until the meeting.

Anyone thinking of buying this unit

STEER CLEAR

until we know what is happening about this backlight bleed issue.......

i dont think there is many.......

the manager said they have sent out 3 returns...... 2 of them were fine (hence 2 rma posts here saying they are good now) and 1 of them was bad again.

how much would it cost me to return monitor to overclockers. out of interest, should i bother to ring nec now iknow what they will say?

what a load of ****!

just spoke with NEC returns...... and they have no stock to do a RMA and that they have no idea when they are going to get stock. They also recommend sending unit back to supplier.

The woman recomends me getting my money back as she said she has got an official email from NEC japan stating that there is an issue with the backlight and that it cannot be resolved and that99.9% of the TFTs are affected. So even when they do get stock the unit MOST LIKELY will have the same problem.......

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!

OCuk what do you suggest me doing? I really want this monitor but I am not accepting a screen with such back light bleed that I have got.........

Hi m8

NEC have seen this thread and would like to know who you spoke too or any details you can possibly forward onto them please. Any help would be greatly appreciated - [email protected]

As NEC are saying there is no fault with the monitor and want to investigate this further. I'd be surprised if it was 99.9% too because if thats the case then OcUK must have got lucky as have quite a few members on these forums???

Rest assured if there is a problem OcUK will get it resolved. :)

Dear Mr. Wickham,

thank you very much for your email-message.

IPS panel technology is sensitive for such issues especially with the very bright backlight.
This is actually state of the art of this technology.

You can find the Brightness Control in the OnScreenMenue. There you can set the Advanced DV Mode from OFF to ON.

This can be no reason to change the monitor.

Yours faithfully

i just got this email back from nec, what do you surgest now.look at my screen on this page!

Lol.. the only thing i am guessing though is that the lady on you spoke to either:

1) Doesnt care and just wants to get you off the phone.

2) Is upset with NEC and wants people to stop buying and returning monitors

3) PMS? hehhe :D

Gibbo. The lady i spoke to told me twice in one session that i should return my monitor and get a refund. Dont know if it was the same as spluff's but her name was Joan. I called it in on Wednesday 12:30pm, 1 hour after i received my monitor from OCUK.

Hope that helps

the woman i spoke to was called Joanne and the manager Ulrika.

For a company to admit this and then say the head office in Japan are having a meeting to see if it can be resolved or if its "acceptable" is a complete joke and not very professional.

The monitor is aimed at gamers and backlight bleed is an issue. I have showed many people my monitor and they cannot believe I paid 400quid for it.

The mentioned trying the DV mode, but as my screenshot shows it doesnt resolve the problem and it is totally unacceptable they are trying to now say that this is ok.

If this continues on I think Watchdog and Trading Standards will need to get involved.

Don't worry m8 if this does effect a large percentage of the screens we will be making sure NEC take them all back and we shall offer the full refunds. My advice is give them a few days to let them pick up on the problem/fault and to see if its a widespread issue. Afterall if this all goes pear shaped they will getting a few hundred monitors back from ourselves too....

All I can say is the one I saw in operation had no issues and it was superb, which leads me to believe the 99.9% issue is a load of rubbish.

Any chance you could hand test a few and give them priority sendout? Or do it per order? Possbily for a small fee if you ask for it over the phone. I'm sure £5 - £10 to you for peace of mind would save a lot of time and hassle for both OCUK and the customer.

It's just a thought, as it's difficult for most to find the time and money to repost the item and be available for the redelivery etc etc. It's my worst fear and I'd be happy to live with small issues just becasue of the hassle factor. But it's still not an ideal situation.

Oh great after getting off Dell hell, im probably going to get the same thing with NEC. Going to be well nervous when I turn mine on and probably bury my head in my hands. By the looks of it there does seem to be many people with this problem, where is the QC when they were making these. This is a £400 monitor not some cheap stuff, on NEC's website they are doing all the flash stuff saying that its a state of the art gamers monitor, I didn't see any small print saying you cant play it with games which have dark stuff in it.
Gibbo are you saying that there would be no problems with returning them back to yourselves then if a lot of us are suffering with back light issues? or would this only come under the 7 day rule.

An UPDATE ON MY MONITOR

It seems to be getting better...

1st Day (50% brightness)
black1.jpg

2 Days later (50% Brightness, no other changes)
black3.jpg

2 Days later (50% Brightness, with Advanced DV ON)
black4.jpg

With advanced DV its perfect. with it off just slight bleed lower left corner..

Hopefully it will get completely fixed in a few days

The message I take from the above experiences is what I think Baddass was hinting at in an earlier post in this thread: When it comes to the claims (and the perhaps too-eager user-expectations) of new technological products WAIT - If at all possible - until the product has an authoritative track record.

It seems, that whatever the vendor's prior reputation...Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware!.

The bleeding on mine was nowhere near as bad compared to other people's screen on here but even so mines done the same thing as Z3R0-CooL's so I thought it was worth posting these.
I'm not the best with a camera as you can tell but its virtualy gone now
Just hope it stays like this.

50%contrast, 100%brightness, Dv mode on in both shots.
The extra blue dot on the right is just my razor mouse lit up.

Now

On a more postive note as the last few pages are a bit negative towards the tft I'm well pleased with it, igors review couldn’t be more spot on if he tryed.

Colours are fantastic, brightness and contrast is spot on.
Playing wow, hl2, fear etc on it is too good for words :)

I spoke to an NEC engineer in Germany last night who claimed that the monitors do require a 4-day running in period after which period all bleed should be completely gone. From results all ready this statement is looking very true which certainly puts this monitor back in the position of best 20" on the market. :)

thanks for finding this out Gibbo - have been running it for 2 days now, and like I said it is 50 percent better. Love the screen and will certainly give it a chance - do not want to give up on this one. Have bought a blackout blind for my room to reduce reflection on the screen, as I really want to keep it. Hope saying this doesn't void my warranty !!!!! :D
