NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

well it has been 4 days here and i still have bad backlight bleed. My backlight bleed was the worst I have seen here at first. Looking at other peoples photos I would be happy with that bleed.

I spoke to an NEC engineer in Germany last night who claimed that the monitors do require a 4-day running in period after which period all bleed should be completely gone. From results all ready this statement is looking very true which certainly puts this monitor back in the position of best 20" on the market. :)

Gibbo the problem with this is that the NEC rep I talked to on the phone said that if you use the monitor for longer than 9 hrs (or thereabouts) then you are not entitled to a new replacement, only a refurb.

Thanks for that m8 as to me that sounds like absolute rubbish and shall be giving them an ear bashing on Monday. I think NEC need to be giving some staff the chop as they clearly aint got a clue what they are on about.

Do you turn your monitor completely off at all? It might be worth leaving it idle for a few hours then leaving it on for a while. I presume the backlights are gas filled and that they need a little cooling off period to bed in properly.

Just a thought.

I'm very impressed with your customer service Gibbo. Someone with their customers best interests at heart. Good business is built on real life refferals, you'll certainly be getting some from me. Spot on.

Set mine up today, all i can say is oh my god :D what a difference to the 2005fpw, it is stunning. I have no dead or stuck pixels and I have a bit of bleed bottom left like Z3R0-CooL and Lunix. Sticking with this baby and hoping it will heal like their ones have done. Question to both of you guys have you been turning it off when u go to bed or have u been running screensaver on it overnight to get it healing?
For all you guys what settings are you using for DVM, brightness and contrast?

Seem to be a lot of tech companies lately that are similar in that respect, you can ask three different reps the same question and get three different answers!

i have got mine today, and.. well frankly its stunning , not darkenuff to see back light , but i dont see any so far. just finished a quick half life 2 . widescreen game, lost my self in it . i could not see the edges of the screen it was 10 times better than the oringal time i played it. and then watched a 1080i video. this thing is very very good, anyone who is arfade of the problems people have braught up, dont be. this is 100% worth your money.

okay , i now see heavy back light bleed. and 1 grey pixel. :( .. hopeing these are just teathing problems due to the heat of 1st couple of hours of Working ,

should i contact nec like you guys have ? ?

edit ( sorry for the poor qualty phone camera problem makes it look 10 times worse. but you get the idea, BLEED :(

This is my backlight bleed with 100% brightness, 50% contrast and ADV on

It is mostly bottom left with a little bit top left, it looks a lot like Z3R0-CooL and Lunix,s screens. Been on for about seven hours. I am hoping that it will clear as NEC say upto four days fingers crossed. What do you think?
I really want this baby to heal as it is cracking in every other way.

That looks perfect to me?

All TFT's have backlight bleed just some models do it more than others I believe, its just part of the technology. Though I'd be more than happy with how yours is m8. :)

Gibbo I can notice the bleed when I play fear, if you look at Z3RO-Cools quake 4 screen that is what mine looks like bottom left. Dont get me wrong the bleed is much better than the 2005,s i had. I just want it to heal up a bit more there and looking at other peoples I reckon it will get better. Did the NEC guy from germany say what was causing the blead, when I press very slightly in that corner the bleed gets worse.

I saw this monitor on this week only with 25 quid off & I've caved in & ordered it!

Was trying to hold off until I got back from viewing the total eclipse in Turkey, but couldn't pass up on the extra saving.

Man I'm looking forward to hooking this up (provided I don't get any of the problems mentioned here ;) )

Good to see you’re pleased with it :)
I’ve been turning mine off when going to sleep each night, just letting it go into standby mode.
Its too much hard work for me to take a decent picture of it as the last shots I posted were a right pain to get right but I just looked at my screen and as far as I can see its improved again, it looks 100% pure black to me now.
The bleed you’ve got is minimal and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it vanishes too over the next few days as mine was a lot worse than that at first and after reading various forums on it etc where other people have had the same thing happen to their screens like mine and Z3R0-CooL’s did, I think that NEC engineer in Germany who Gibbo who spoke to was spot on.

Hi Lunix, thanks for the reply, will have her in standby. Glad to hear that your one is getting better all the time. I have got a good feeling with this one and coming from 3 2005fpw which had horrible bleed which did not get better is saying something. They are absolutely stunning when I first had it on It felt like I was going to scratch the screen with mouse pointer it is so vivid. What other forums are discussing the Nec as this was the only one I found?

I got mine yesterday and I have to say I am pleased with it. It is almost perfect with a tiny bit backlight as the bottom left - got even less today.

Only problem I now have is that I need to scroll from left to right when reading all websites, including this forum. It was fine yesterday @ 1680x1050 but today at the same res I need to scroll? Any ideas how to get rid of them scroll bars?

Notice the BBC news ticker at the top has scroll bars.

How do you register my warrenty ? i want tell them about my greyed out pixel. :( its very noticsable when im useing photoshop. games and movies i can not see it. buti spend 80% of the time on my pc in photoshop.. anyone got any idea of how i can fix this ? think the Evil flashing video mite get rid of it?

I was one of the people who RMA'ed my screen back to NEC for backlight bleed and got a good defect free screen back. I'm currently playing Oblivion and i can't praise this screen highly enough. The real killer feature in my eyes is the Advanced DV mode which really does seem to make the blacks blacker and is very noticable in Oblivions dungeons and cave and this is whilst playing under zero light conditions which really does show up the problems of LCD displays producing good solid blacks.
