NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

Spoke with Sarah this morning - what a wonderful lassie! - I wish all customer service representatives were so helpful :)

Same as whats been stated previously - NEC Japan are investigating and they will get back to us once a resolve is sorted.

However - bear in mind that this problem MUST be reported to NEC within the first two weeks of purchase - otherwise if the monitor is later decided to be replaced you will end up with a refurbished one - Just a point to bear in mind.

I'd bettter hurry up and give her a call then, I'm very lazy and haven't bothered ringing up NEC or even written the serial number down !

Any one got any idea what info they need when you ring them up ? i.e. order numbers and where you purchased it from.

Or is it just a case of leave your name and number/address and thats that ?

Also forgot to mention that mines developed a habbit of just randomly turning its self off ! very odd indeed.

Just need to press the front power button and it'll come back to life, this got quite annoying in Doom 3 last night !

It'll be like walk through a door "zapp monitor off", hit the power button and then some zombies like chewing on my face !

lol! funnily enough yorkshirepadd Sarah was asking me if i was you - lol

i believe you havn't got in touch with her yet ;) - give her a buzz on 08701 201169 with your serial number to hand - she will take your details then ask you to send a copy of your original invoice for her attention.

Just rang up now, and gave them my details.

I just need to pass through the whole serial number later on this afternoon, I know it starts with 621.

Got a ref number and all that, so thats cool.

Spoke with Sarah this morning... she has advised that they are still waiting to here from Japan... but you need to get your faults reported to them, and receive an RMA number.

Im led to believe that they will contact us when a decision has been made...

I’m hoping this will turn out well for you lot. I sold my Philips 20” so I could get the NEC, but I’ll wait to see how this issue with the backlight bleed pans out.

One important question, does the glossy coating in anyway hamper reading text?

This is important as I’ve just sold my Philips, which has a matte screen, so I could possibly get the NEC next. In the meantime I’m back to my old trusty LG CRT, but god damn what a downgrade, after a few hours my eyes are starting to hurt. Reading text on the Philips was a joy, I have to say.

What I’m wondering is since the NEC has a glossy reflective screen does it in anyway make reading a pain after a while like CRTs?

(Maybe someone more knowledgeable could explain to me why CRTs have such an effect)

The glossy screen is not even an issue for me... I dont have a lite source directly in fromt of the screen (or behind me).. so no reflection... I prefer using the monitor in dimmer lighting anyway... so it really does not affect me...

Maybe what I’m trying to get at is what makes a CRT not so great for the eyes compared to a TFT? Could the reflections have something to do with it or is it the way they work or something else?

Btw I usually work in a somewhat dimmed room, IMO, but with dark screen backgrounds I usually find the reflections of my CRT a bit annoying and I guess I’m going to find the NEC a bit annoying too, but I could live with the NECs glossy screen so long as it doesn’t make reading text less pleasing than matte screen TFTs. I hope this is making some sense lol

What you guys have to say? Any of you owned any matte TFTs and want to give your opinion on this?

being at a recent lan I can honestly say the picture on this screen is amazing - it literally jumps out and kicks you in the face - even my wifey likes it! I saw other widescreens at the lan - bilenia or somat? and a load of 24"dells - all suffering bleed and crappy colours compared to this.

But seriously - compared to a matt finish what my last Iiyama 17" TFT had - this screen is a beuaty in itself - I've seen the sony style X-Screens and they do glive glare but this one dont (unless your sat right behind the sun or something) ;)

I really think the glossy screen is a non-issue, I've not once noticed it when the monitor is switched on. My loan monitor is coming along nicely, still got the bleed but it's good of NEC to provide one, it's given me a chance to have a play with all the settings and set up games etc.

It's funny, people say that LCD's aren't up to the job with fast paced shooters but I appear to have improved in Quake 4 multi :D, I'm also suprised how well the 7900gtx is handling it at 1680x1050, 4xaa, ultra quality. The fps counter seems to stay on or around the 60fps mark, I can't tell the difference in real terms to the old 7800gtx SLI setup I had before...probably Quake just works well anyway with the new video card.

Still waiting for a list of peoples gaming settings :) come on guys, surely that's more interesting than bleed?
