NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

No dead pixels.

I'm pretty sure it's dust as it flickers in and out of view slightly as i move my head around it. It is on 2 separate parts of the monitor though and is really quite annoying.

I've been using mine for some time now.

Pros
1. exceptional gaming performance, very good desktop performance.
2. Nice appearance.

Cons
1. susceptable to backlight bleed although I don't notice when playing BF2.
2. Kicks off quite abit of heat.
3. No height adjust.

My backlight bleed dissapeared completely after 2 weeks of running it on.

Its best to check it with a full page of black after the panel has been on for a long period.

Iv'e had mine for 3-4 months now, unlike the Dell 2005fpw the Panel stays uniform even when it's at it's warmest.

For minor height adjustments, I switched to a kensington desk mount, very well built, bout £45 clamps on to the desk moves in all directions and rotations, tis a shame OCUK dont do more mounting solutions for the TFTs.
Another one to look at but for more cash would be the ergotron lx arm. (hard to find in black).

I never experienced any backlight bleed with this monitor, or any dead/stuck pixels. From out of the box it was a perfectly uniform screen. So maybe I was lucky, I dunno.

I was expecting some bleed as many tfts do have this prob at first but it usually goes away after a week or so.

Whites are very slightly dimmer at the edges of the monitor (last .5cm) which is unavoidable on these types of monitor but blacks have no bleed at all.

After RMAing my first monitor I've never had any trouble with the replacement. Very nice monitor indeed.

It does however omit a high pitched squeel every now and again, but so do my house mates and I can put up with them so I'll put up with this!
Now if only they'd keep they're grubby fingers off it !

Games are great running at 1680x1050.

I was running it along side the old faulty one for a while, dual screen setup ! was sweet.
But then Nec wanted the old one with funny colours and backlight bleed back !

Not really sure what they do with the faulty ones, on doubt gone into some landfill somewhere or marked as the "Managers Special" in some dodgy highstreet electrical shop !

I had one of these, I could see it wasn't a dead or stuck pixel,I could see it was indeed more distant and slightly out of focus. so I flicked that part of the screen,(proberbly unadvisable!)and it dissapeared and now its gone. It must be dust on the backlight plate. I bet a lot of people think these are dead pixels, just make sure its not the film with the dead pixel.
Works but requires a worrying amount of force. Mind you I did cushion the flick with bubble wrap wrapped in a glasses cloth.

NEC tends to generate maybe more than average heat (compared to other LCD monitors around). This is probably related to the fact that monitor is already drawing more power and DC power converter is integrated in the monitor itself. It's probably more pronounced if your room tends to be on the warm side.

It's nothing to worry about, as long as the heat is properly extracted from the monitor. In other words, monitor cooling points are not obstructed somehow and monitor does have plenty of ambient air around.

Yer but it's gonna be good in the winter :p :D :p

Should I get a replacement???

Hi guys,

I have had my NEC for about 4 - 5 months and I noticed the other day that the silver surround has come away from the face of the actual screen but only on the top and bottom (longest edges) has anyone else seen this happen? Only noticed when I stood over the screen looking down..??

Any advice? Also I suppost I'd have to call Sarah is it?? At NEC?

Thanks ;)

Other than this small isssue I love the monitor still :)

I've had mine about 4 months now and cant see any warping on the silver bezel seems well constructed to me, I'd be suprised if that happened on mine.

If you think you have a dead pixel on your NEC 20WGX2 you should concider this....It could be that all your pixels work perfectly but you have a spec of something "behind" the LCD surface. you move your head and you can see that the spec is within the screen and further away from you than the pixels on the screen.

You can remove these bits of dust and have a completely clean screen of light. :D

When attempting to move dust particles from the inner panel surface be sure that it is infact a bit of dust or dirt that resides behind the LCD surface or you'll be taking an unneccecery risk. Instead of flicking the spec directly, which might damage the panel's glossy surface, and requires a lot of force. You should, instead, just gently slap the side of the panel, (black bit) which is nearest to the spec.
Make sure that this side is facing downards before you slap it so that the dust is naturally going to fall dowards and away from the center of the screen. you may have to rotate the panel for this.

Although well made and discrete, The LCD Stand doesn't allow rotation so it might be a good idea to desk/wall mount the panel before attempting to move the dust.

does it effect the image on the screen ? and in mm how far has it bowed ?

No effect on image but tbh I paid good money for this monitor so I expect it to be perfect, don't think I'm asking too much

it's gradual 2mm in the middle then goes flat at either end toward the corner if you see what I mean :)

Going to call NEC tomoz anyhow

It seems that bezel is loose so that it's slightly detached from the main frame. I'm not sure if you can put it back in place with one gentle "click" as again I'm not sure how the bezel is attached at all (does it have bracket or something else).

Anyhow, yes, calling the NEC for advice is your best bet now. If picture is not affected, I guess that it's nothing serious.

I've had my NEC for about a month and noticed this very problem on the bottom bezel last week. It doesn't effect the picture in anyway though. I will say that when I got my TFT. The back of it, on the top had to be pushed back in. And even now the is a little bit of a gap where the back won't clip in properly.

The screen itself works perfectly and If I wasn't in such a rush to use it I might of sent it back. Let me know what NEC say.

This TFT is HOT, in both ways :]
