Need For Speed Shift

I quite like this, decent for a stopgap till Forza 3.

I like it much better than Dirt 2, they ruined that with a severe lack of actual rally stages, instead putting the emphasis on 'extreme' racing, very americanised and naff. Pleased i swapped it for Shift.

I had a quick bash on this over a mates house yesterday and I thought it was pants. Not purely arcade and the driving model is not serious enough to be called a sim either, so for me it's kind of an uncomfortable middle ground. Before I played this game a lot of the reviews I read were bigging up the cockpit view, saying it was the best way to enjoy this game. The cockpit view in this game is no better than GRID, Dirt 2 or PGR4. They were making a big deal about the dials all working correctly, well that's great, if you're Codemasters and the year is 2006, because the later Colin Mcrae games had working cockpits so this is hardly a big deal. I thought this game was a bit gimmicky before I played it, I didn't want it to be, and I wanted to enjoy it, but I just didn't. I thought the controls were overly sensitive and not enjoyable at all. It wasn't purely PGR4 sliding everywhere with ease, and it wasn't like playing Forza 2 with all the assists off either. It was just a confused game in my opinion and EA should probably put the Need for Speed series to bed after this one. Start a new franchise, something new and fresh because this franchise is just getting a bit stale for me now.

For some time now they've been treating the majority of their games like the EA sports series, IE. an updated version every year. This works for sports games because fans like to have the new kits, new squads, new leagues, new game features, and they can get away with releasing yearly updates, it's something that needs to be done. With their other games however, Need for Speed and Skate for example shouldn't have yearly updates. Take some time to develop properly, listen to the majority of fans and give them what they really want. They should have either committed this into sim territory, or put it in the arcade bracket like NFS of old. Not just some stupid cross between the two that in my opinion fails.

a lot on here seem to be not very impressed but i think it is fairly good but i will say i havent played it that much yet and compared to the last few need for speed games this is loads better but that isnt hard is it :o .

Basically the damage system is borked on PS3, it looks like they turned off the bodywork deformation so that your left with just scratches and paintwork damage. In the other versions the bodywork will be twisted and dented by the same crash.

I wasn't aware of this either.
I too picked up DiRT2 and am loving it (loved the first one too mind) and was going to pick up Shift as well.... maybe after waiting for it to drop in price a bit, or if I get bored of DiRT 2, to keep me going unti GT5 comes out.

Anyway, I wasn't aware of any gimping, so I think I'll pass... or maybe download the PC demo and consider that instead.

Anybody think this damage system could be fixed in a patch, or is that just the way it is?

Vin.

disapointed with this game, the controls is what killed it for me.
i have adjusted the controls many times and still the cars dont handle correctly.

i can trade in this game for the new halo next week.

bring on forza 3

Handling is suspect but you can get used to it, atleast on a wheel, God help you guys on controllers :P As said, the loading times are hellish, and there is quite a bit of slow down, atleast on the PS3.

This is a great need for speed game, the best in years. When compared to the juvinile behaviour of Dirt 2 or the stoic greyishness of racepro. Its not as good as PGR or Forza but its a great semi-arcade racer that entertains without the usual brash, loud, annoying brand-filled gloss that usually veneer's the mediocrity of recent titles.

Its fun to play, it looks great, its challenging unless you set everything to low/easy, progression is steady and constantly rewarding. The game is VERY solid on all fronts, i agree it excels at none, but this should not be thought of as a typical NFS game - because its in a different league altogether.

gave the game another shot and tryed a diffrent car, enjoying it a bit now but the controls still arnt perfect.

can any one show me their control sensativity settings so that i dont go round corners so dramaticly?

Just bought this for me and a mate. Played it at his house first with the controller and could not get the hang of it. I gave it a chance but i think its unplayable with the controller.

Got home and played it with the wheel and its like a different game.

Sooooooooooooo much better.:D

Anyone playing this on a wheel? reading around a lot of people that are enjoying it say the wheel is a must and the pad controls don't really work.

I have the wheel and it is essential to fully get the feel of the cars etc, but as said above, not worth the 40 squids for sure!

It'll be interesting to try this with the wheel judging by the comments here. Normally if a game is poor with the pad, it's even worse with a wheel.

Will give it a go tomorrow.

Just found these setting posted on another forum for the pad.

I've tried them and they do seem better.

Steering Dead Zone-15%
Accel Dead Zone-10%
Brake Dead Zone-10%
Steering sensitivity-5%
Acell Sensitivity -5%
Brake sensitivity-5%
Speed steering Sensitivity 100%

On to the 2nd fix:

At the main menu enter CAR GARAGE----> TUNING, press 'Y' to enter quick tuning mode.
Under the heading 'balance' move the slider all the way to OVERSTEER. That's right oversteer. Apparently the developer labeled this slider wrong or its a glitch. Turning the slider to oversteer will actually add understeer.

Now go drive. as you can see the cars are now more comparible to the feeling of Forza2 and RacePro. It may not be as good but it is now close! There was a sim hidden somewhere in all this mess and I may have to take back some to the nasty things I said beforehand

Tried those settings and it's still a long way from the likes of Forza. It just makes a bit easier to control, it doesn't help the feel of the physics model, which to me feels terminally broken.

Horrible game, roll on Forza 3.
