I had a quick bash on this over a mates house yesterday and I thought it was pants. Not purely arcade and the driving model is not serious enough to be called a sim either, so for me it's kind of an uncomfortable middle ground. Before I played this game a lot of the reviews I read were bigging up the cockpit view, saying it was the best way to enjoy this game. The cockpit view in this game is no better than GRID, Dirt 2 or PGR4. They were making a big deal about the dials all working correctly, well that's great, if you're Codemasters and the year is 2006, because the later Colin Mcrae games had working cockpits so this is hardly a big deal. I thought this game was a bit gimmicky before I played it, I didn't want it to be, and I wanted to enjoy it, but I just didn't. I thought the controls were overly sensitive and not enjoyable at all. It wasn't purely PGR4 sliding everywhere with ease, and it wasn't like playing Forza 2 with all the assists off either. It was just a confused game in my opinion and EA should probably put the Need for Speed series to bed after this one. Start a new franchise, something new and fresh because this franchise is just getting a bit stale for me now.
For some time now they've been treating the majority of their games like the EA sports series, IE. an updated version every year. This works for sports games because fans like to have the new kits, new squads, new leagues, new game features, and they can get away with releasing yearly updates, it's something that needs to be done. With their other games however, Need for Speed and Skate for example shouldn't have yearly updates. Take some time to develop properly, listen to the majority of fans and give them what they really want. They should have either committed this into sim territory, or put it in the arcade bracket like NFS of old. Not just some stupid cross between the two that in my opinion fails.
