New Canon full frame?

Photokina starts on Sept 18th. In general are we expecting the announcement then.... or before?

I would say then at the earliest but these things are hard to predict. Canon will want good stock and reviews well before Christmas (typically week after thanks giving). There might be a ct and mouse game with Nikon to see about prices and or finalize features (they probably have 2-3 variations with slightly different sensor + AF systems combos, and may make firmware restrictions to limit frame rate or not etc.)

Canon (and to a much lesser extent Nikon) may wan to wait for the 5DMKIII/D800 sales to start dropping and production to outstrip supply. The Canon entry level fill frame is quite likely not too distant from the 5DMKIII (I will guess same sensor, even if it is the 5dMKII sensor that is not much different)) so they will want to protect sales. Nikon will be able to distance the 2 camera bodies a bit more due to a lower res sensor (still likely 24MP, perhaps tweaked D3x).

Release dates may also be pushed back late enough to ensure all 5DMKII (and on Nikon's side D700) bodies are sold out.

Canon seem to be slow on releasing things lately, for some reason. Even if announced in September, I really think you'll be waiting a good year before seeing the camera.

I've long since given up trying to understand why Canon do the things they do :D

The discussion on the 24-70 is interesting as I haven't strapped my Mk I on my 5D2 for getting on for 12 months. I'm seriously considering binning both and using the accumulated cash for a 5D3 with prices like these!

I keep my 24-70 for a few reasons.

1 - It is still a hell of a zoom lens no matter what way you look at it, in versatility, built quality and image quality.
2 - It covers a good range, it acts as a back up to my primes.
3 - It's not losing any money by keeping it, if anything, it went up !

Selling it weakens my position in terms of cover for my lenses. Plus I do use it.

A tiny bit of another rumour called the 6D. If it is the same size and build quality as the 7D, then sod it for £1500 I will go FF, bite the considerable bullet and get rid of my 17-55 to fund a 24-70 either second hand or mk2.

Thinking it over for the last few days and doing figures even if they do bring out a top crop again the body wouldn't be far off the rumoured price for a entry FF anyway. It would atleast get me on the FF ladder and I have a 1.4 tc to give me more reach on my 70-200 anyway.

Would make sense, a 7D with the 5DMKIII sensor, would hope it is less than $2000 though. Another baseless rumour but the Nikon D600 entry level FF was rumored to be $1500, I think that could be too low.

The Nikon 24-70 compares very well with the canon and Nikon primes in the same focal range, the choice of primes vs pro zoom here comes down to aperture vs AF speed + versatility, and personal style of prime vs zoom. Even the Bokeh quality of my 24-70 is wonderful, actually better than the cheap primes I own.

$2000 is currently about £1290 ish. I just cannot see it being under £1500 at launch and then coming down to £1100-1200. When you consider what the 7D body sold for I just cannot see canon selling at $1500 even if it's the 7D with the 5D3 sensor.

I'd be more than happy with that.

You use a 70-200 mkII with a 450D...

The MTF charts etc. look good, people are excited about it. We'll see once the reviews start coming out.

There are plenty of other options, Sigma 24-70 HSM is decent as is the Tamron 24-70 VC. There's the older Tamron 28-75 that people like as well.

im due an upgrade

Aye looks that way! Can't believe you have the 70-200 F2.8 mk ii with that body. Craziest combination I've seen in a very long time :D If you are going to a 5D mk iii that lens will absolutely shine! Want one myself as I've got the F4 version but its one hell of a lump of cash to try and stump up :(

And it is not hat great really, distortion at 24mm is very pronounced, and you don't need to be pixel peeping to see that.

And as I have said before, if you are using an f4.0 lens on FF you may as well go for a 17-55mm f2.8 on crop.

Kaii's opinion, while entertaining, is generally hardly reliable. The 24-105 is generally about as sharp as the 24-70, with more pronounced distortion and f/4 in trade off for range and IS. They are two different lenses and often fill very different needs. The Tammy 24-70 VC is worth a look as well, of course.

OK so the new Canon full frame has mostly been about budget full frame speculation. My question is how much is the EOS 3D going to cost? Fron Canon Rumors:

Canon EOS-3D X Specifications

46 MP
3.7 frame per second
Dual DIGIC 5+
ISO: (25) 50-6400 (12800)
AF: Same as 1DX
USB 3
CF+SD

Another feature mentioned about the camera is better heat dissipation of the sensor compared to other EOS cameras. Apparently, this results in industry leading low ISO performance.

Like most of the other stuff that comes from that website, utter ****. the EOS 3D has been speculated and supposedly coming out for the last decade. Squeezing 46mp out of a FF sensor is verging on impossible without having diffraction showing at even large apertures, making it useless.

If canon make a 46MP sensor, it'll be a medium format one, not FF.

I said this on TP and I'll say it again. The only reason CR and NR get the bad rep they do is because people keep reporting on forums what they say as gospel and then being disappointed when they don't come to fruition.

" take it with a large grain of salt as it is a new contact. I’m still on the fence as to whether or not we’ll see another DSLR for Photokina, lots of conflicting information"
