New essential Android apps thread

I saw Talon mentioned above but that doesn't look all that great.

Talon is pretty decent as it is but it's also quite new so might be missing a few features. On the plus side it is getting updated on a regular basis - sometimes 2 or 3 times a week - so it should be feature packed pretty soon.

This is quite a good site, lists apps/games that arent infested with IAP

Quote enjoying MoWo, Compulsive and Magic 2014 at the moment (all free).

Excellent, I've all but given up on mobile gaming as it's so hard to find decent games without IAP, not had a good look at this yet but it sounds like just what I need. I'm happy to pay for games, I just want to know that once I have then thats it.

can anyone recommend any good two player turn based games (ideally free or very cheap)? Been playing a lot of words with friends through Kik which is great but would like some more games to play.

cheers

How do people handle podcasts on Android?

On iOS they're all available on iTunes and it syncs up to my phone effortlessly. Is there a similar solution for Android?

It doesn't have to sync but I want them available to download via an app of some sort, it appears BeyondPod (or similar) can do the job?

installed that power sleep.

I think its very restrictive tbh, I dont want to be woken everyday at a set time, there is no option to turn off alarms at weekends. Rather it just let me tell it when to use my phone, or when the phone is 100% battery and on charge connected to wifi. makes much more sense.

Update: Wrote a review on Google play for it detailing what options should be added, things like setting days for the alarm to be set on or having the option to have the app run at times specified by the user or when the user feels like it.

the dev (Samsung austria) replied to the comment saying thanks for the input, so hopefully they will add these options soon.

Installed Comodo from AVAST on a friend (who I trust) saying it's a good product. Sadly since then my phone (Samsung S4) has kept locking up and and freezing all over the place. Went to remove it and cant uninstall it! what a crock, so think twice before installing it people!

Common sense is the better "Antivirus" when it comes to smartphones anyway. Don't bother with them, they just mess around with the phone and performance.

No need for an antivirus, just make sure you properly check the permissions during app installation.

Cannot believe Spotify STILL have not added official support for AVRCP yet to allow song info to be displayed via Bluetooth on a car stereo and to control music from the car or Bluetooth paired controller. Glad that I’m rooted, Xposed has had the AVRCP module for Spotify for ages now.

When the official devs won’t do something and generally be lazy about it, turn to the fan community who do a better job 99% of the time.

This is amazing news. Exactly what I've been waiting for.

I had to some quick research of what is ACRCP but (correct me if I'm wrong) but my Spotify on my Nexus 5 is all controllable from my Audi A3. Given I don't have full control, I can skip and go back tracks using my sterring wheel controls. Are you expecting to be able to scroll through whole playlist and choose tracks using the buttons of the car only?

It does sadden me to see how many installs AV apps like AVG for Android have had on the Play Store. Rather baffling really.

The room two is now available. Was out on the 13th. Loved the first one. Was jealous of iPhone users getting it in December. Cheeky monkeys. Its £1.99.
