I have the CPU seated, do I need to take the brackets off by the side of CPU to fit the cooler?

The cooler suppliedf will screw into the holes that are left,.

tighten the screws a bit at the time - diagonally across.

Off phone (for now) - yes, tighten the screws, bit by bit all the way around across the diagonal of the cooler.

Sod it, seat the motherboard into the case.

I'm concerned that my build technique, of testing a new rig outside the case first, adds to the chances of something getting damaged for a first time builder. I think i'd be happier if you installed the GFX card in the case and had it secured.

Do you mean it doesn't have a thread? it may be a support.
