New Gaming Rig Advice..

Haven't changed anything in Nvidia control panel but like you said, it happened with an AMD graphics card as well but may be worth a go?
There are settings you can play with - most of them disabling power saving features and optimising settings.

I'll be around later and and list settings which you can apply anytime...

How so? To me it suggests his RAM is running at 800Mhz, and not 1600Mhz. His screenshot in post #57 has a command rate of 1T, not 2T as I was suggesting.
?

DDR = Double Data Rate - so 800Mhz x 2 = 1600Mhz.

And the 2t is the xmp setting for that memory - it can run at 1t at 1.65v with manual setings - but it's not the XMP setting.

Not sure what you mean?

Just played Ghost Recon: Wildlands for an hour (had a free code due to the offer with the 1070) and it ran buttery smooth at everything Ultra, weird how some games are absolutely fine.

Wildlands will love the GTX 1070 - as it's heavily optimised towards nVidia.

My gut still feels your problem could be solved with the right combination of BIOS/software tweaks and drivers. No promises we'll get there though...

Additional: Just in case you're confused - your memory is running fine at 1600MHz and the timings are the default settings using XMP. Your 16Gb should drop in with relative ease now that you know what you're doing.

It's completely fine on GTA as well which is meant to have problems with stuttering, mine runs fine though. Will be ordering the RAM today as well as the cooler. Will an overclock on my CPU get me any more frames or just improve performance slightly?

What games specifically are you having issues with now - has the GTX 1070 cured some of them as this would be crucial to know?

All things being equal you would be looking at a clock of approx 4.2-4.6GHz - which would be a significant bump the closer you get to 4.6GHZ - and would help games such as GTA V and ARMA 3 in particular (games you've mentioned you play).

It's not essential - but your CPU has now become a slight bottleneck to your GPU (**do not be concerned it's nothing you will notice**) - but/so any boost to the CPU will benefit the performance of the GTX 1070 too - win win.

If we can pull off this upgrade and overcome your stuttering problem along the way - you will have spent approx £400+? - and reinvigorated your system for at least another year or two...

The main culprits are Rust and Arma 3 to be honest, Rust and Arma it happens like every 20 seconds. I know they both have issues but I see loads of streamers and gameplay that is stutter free so surely something can be fixed.

Sounds great, looking forward to overclocking it (never done it before so you may have to talk me through it). It would be brilliant mate, would be really chuffed. Thanks for your help so far.

That's may hope - as the problem is very game specific. The hardware updates will help a bit (in all games) but I suspect the main issues you're experiencing are due to an erroneous setting/s. I play ARMA 3 and have seen the issue raised a number of times with people asking for solutions/config settings. I advise researching this as there are many fixes but unfortunately not one that fixes all...

I had to look up Rust - and the Early Access obviously struck me straight away. It also can't be played single player - so guessing you're connected to a server all the time? If we can get all other games sorted but Rust is still an issue - i would call that a success as Early Access games are a PITA (i know i've suffered Ark and space engineers :)).

I understand the idea/concept of early access but i do feel some developers are taking the pee in development time - regardless of them requiring funds to help finance their projects...

Not a problem.

Not a problem.

I have tried things with ARMA such as launch options and the kind with no luck, don't know if there's anything else worth trying? I have over 800 hours in DayZ so know a lot about Early Access haha. DayZ used to stutter for me until I moved it to a SSD which completely fixed the problem, didn't work for ARMA or Rust though.

Just ordered my RAM, will be with me tomorrow.

I used to play dayz - one of the best online experiences i've had, despite the bugs. Unfortunately, spawn snipers and hackers eventually wore me down. Suddenly being raised into the air every 5 minutes, transported into the middle of nowhere or magically teleporting players just became too annoying. Is it any better?

That's what got me into the ARMA serires...

Yeah there's nothing quite like it, can result in some of the most tense gameplay ever. It is a lot better, very very few hackers now, still very slow with the progress but it's getting there. It's what got me in to the ARMA series as well!

Unplug your PC, deplete rest of power by pressing the power button (old habit).

Touch your nearest radiotor pipe (exposed metal) and then pull out your old memory. Clear away any dust, in fact take the time to clean the inside of your PC, then insert new memory.
Check you haven't pulled any connections loose/out and then plug PC back in and power on.

Don't panic if it restarts a few times. Once it's settled down and booted up - restart and enter BIOS and set the XMP as before.

Ok, great, thanks! Wouldn't it be lovely if all this stuttering went away just by adding another 8gb of RAM, wishful thinking.

You can't just change to ACHI mode - you would need to do a fresh install of windows.

EDIT: Will read article later (lunch :))- but can guess what it's alluding to. But a fresh install is what it entails i'm afraid.

ACHI is the accepted norm now (even back when your system was built) - surprised yours wasn't setup like that originally.

Would be appreciated if you have a read mate thanks! I have downloaded a REG file to set the AHCI to active on power options.

Will do a clean install if I need to.
