New Gaming Rig Advice..

Makes sense - that's the reason my gameplay appeared smooth. Although my FPS was relatively low it was pretty constant which may explain why it was smoother than i expected it to be - even though no V-SYNC.

So you didn't have V-SYNC on yet got smooth frames? Not quite I fully understand this sentence :D

Is yours installed on an SSD?
Not this game - as only loaded on originally to have a look. May play it now so will move to game SSD.

I wonder why mine spikes without VSYNC on then?

Without VSYNC:

Built in bench test.

The built in bench test FPS:
  • Average - 45.06 FPS
  • Min - 38.07 FPS
  • Max - 51.35 FPS
Bench CPU usage:
  • Average - 62.2%
  • Min - 49.5%
  • Max - 97.0%
Bench GPU usage:
  • Average - 98.6%
  • Min - 93.3%
  • Max - 99%

Because of your superior system your FPS had more room to fluctuate because your CPU cruised it's way through the game - max usage 42%. So without V-Sync enabled your CPU wasn't held back and it's superior strength boosted your FPS at sudden less intense moments within the game.

Where as mine maxed out at times (probably a lot) - resulting, coincidentally, with a steady 40'ish FPS. My surprise was i didn't get a really low slump - but then as mentioned it's a GPU driven game so my CPU, even when maxed, was still strong enough to keep it from dropping dramatically. So, gameplay remained relatively smooth - as mentioned almost acting like a 'virtual' V-Sync.

I THINK I understand. Is that where GSYNC would really shine? Moments like that?
That's a difficult one to answer - depends on the FPS output of the given game (fluctuations), refresh of the monitor in use and how V-Sync actually performs for that game.

Best thing to do is experiment. I only use V-Sync if i have obvious problems - habit more than anything as it used to be problematic.

G-Sync and Freesync works in a different way which is why it's praised so much - the monitor doesn't have a fixed refresh rate (as such - it obv has a max). The monitor refresh rate is lead by the GPU which dictates it's output and resultant FPS/refresh. Which is why the results are so much better and consistent.

From observation - your wishlists tend to be imminent shopping lists.

Trouble is, you'll get no complaints from me as i only buy Dell monitors - IPS Ultra sharps love them but only 60Hz so not for you. Plus, i know for a fact that the 27" model is fantastic even for a TN panel. It gets a lot of love on the forums too.

As with any monitor you will need to calibrate it - but i find it's even more crucial with TN panels. I'm usually still underwhelmed with the colours, even after fiddling, but this TN panel really looked impressive after calibration. I still wouldn't swap my IPS panels but i would be very happy if i had this as a gaming panel along side my Ultrsharps.

I'm guessing less than 2 weeks before you succumb... :D

Haha I'm trying to be good! But this GSYNC thing just seems right up my street. Making FPS drops (within reason) look smooth is all I want and this seems to be part of the answer. That and games should look glorious in 1440p!

At the moment on PUBG (I know, I know early Access) even an FPS drop of 15 - let's say 80-65 is very very noticeable and is a bit annoying. Same on DayZ as well.

Less than 10 days...

In hindsight i probably shouldn't have added the G-sync/Freesync advantages as a comparison in post #1567.

By the end of the weekend? :D
Well, from initial question, to mulling and then buying - you showed a massive amount of self-restraint by taking the very admirable time of 12 hrs 15 minutes to buy the Ryzen 1700. :D

If you haven't got the DELL S2417DG in front of you by Tuesday Evening i'll be impressed.

Haha. I'll try my best but I can't promise anything.
It's so spangly and new...

Playing Wildlands now.. noticed that the first 10 minutes I get lag spikes but after that they seem to disappear...

Interestingly, i'm on another thread trying to help troubleshoot a similar'ish problem (core setup same as yours) - but trying to decide if it's hardware related or software before i respond as he's responding to other replies.

So your lag spikes never come back after suffering the initial lag spike?

And have you noticed it in any other games?

I don't need tempting Plec...

I get my most in the opening 5 minutes of loading the game up. I haven't had one now in the last half an hour. Noticed a similar trend every time I've played it.

Haven't really experienced it in any other game, it doesn't stutter so to speak like Wildlands, the FPS drops are noticeable, kind of goes in slow motion for a second then catches up.

Was thinking a SSD may help as it could be to do with loading stuff in as it's a big map but you said you didn't have any so I don't know.

EDIT - Haven't played GTA as I'm focusing on completing Wildlands first (like to do one game at a time). Don't have BF1 on PC, will wait until it comes down in price.

It's everywhere you look...

Thanks for that - doesn't seem related.

Seems game specific - so has every chance of being fixed with a patch.

Are your conventional drives on a defrag schedule?

I did read that review, hasn't done itself any harm!

So yeah, was on Wildlands then for roughly 2 hours, had some stutters in opening 5 minutes, after that it was completely smooth, that was with V-SYNC turned off as well. Have noticed that even on Ultra a few of the lines round objects seem to have a faint white line around them, sometimes flashing which is annoying. Some parts look grainy as well.

Hmm I don't know? I didn't think I'd have to worry about that as we only just recently wiped them.
