New Gaming Rig Advice..

I don't think I can get the motherboard out that easily, the person who built it for me at the time didn't exactly put the screws in to the stand offs properly and sure a couple are stuck in the standoffs.

I really don't know what else to do now, I'm gutted.

Could you elaborate - as we're experiencing a shorting like issues - and that sounds odd.

It's been like that for 3-4 years now, everything has worked fine so I've just left it instead of messing with it and making it worse. One of the stand offs and screws is missing and a couple of the screws that are going in to the standoffs are at an angle.

Your call.

Does't have to be now.

I'll have a think but i'm out of ideas apart from the 'out-of-case' test.

I'm pretty sure it's the motherboard - it's not unknown for MBs to die when upgradng - but it's the HDD scenario - not your fault.

HDD scenario?

Any idea why it's gone back to restarting every 2 seconds again? It's as if it can't get enough power to boot? Due to rebooting so many times and it has to recharge or?

The most gutting part about all this is my brother messages me today saying be will buy my PC off me, if he'd of messaged me yesterday i wouldn't of messed about with any of it.

It really does sound a lot like a shorting issue - but removing it from the case will either cure it or just eliminate it as the cause.

Like i said your call.

I've got to sign off for 30/50 minutes as got a conference call (needs my full attention) - but can maybe get back to you after.

If you decide to strip the case - i'll be back to either guide you through it or advise you what to do if you have the confidence to remove it by yourself.

Going to be tomorrow that I try it now mate I think, getting really stressed out. Can't really afford an upgrade now either so I'm left with no PC after spending 350 on a new graphics card.

I'm going to have to give the motherboard out the case a try as I can't do much else can I. Not even sure I'll be able to get the motherboard out though.

Ok mate, again thanks for the patience and trying to help, can't believe this has happened. Thought it was a 5 minute job :(

So I've just took out the motherboard battery and am going to leave it out again until the morning, also took the power cable out and back in again just incase. Most likely it's going to result in the same but just got everything crossed now in hope it will miracally come back to life. If that doesn't work in the morning I will try and take the motherboard out (going to be tough by the looks of it) and do what you said with it out the case.

Is it worth taking it to a local shop for them to look at it, the problem is they will just do what we've tried and charge me for looking at it so I'll be even more peed off.

If that happens I'm looking at a completely new build I guess bar the 1070, SSD, HDD, PSU (presuming it's ok) which will set me back quite a bit (can't really afford it).

Nightmare really.

That's the problem isnt it, getting a fee for something we already kind of know and adding to the money I'll have to pay in the long run which is already enough!

It's a 550W XFX PRO Core Edition 80 Plus Bronze PSU.

I'm looking at your first post - you were very close to buying a Ryzen build. Until I mistakenly advised you otherwise...

For argument sake - lets say your MB is toast. That means you've lost a resale value of approx. £50 - £80.

But if you were to adapt your build to a Ryzen 1600 it would offset the loss - and TBH - that's the CPU I would buy for a gaming build.

You also put memory in that wont run at 3200 - so I'll adapt that and it will save you some more money.

I'm just going to cost up a basket - as you may be able to get a performance wise the same build for games and technically not lose any money...

This is purely to try and lift your spirits a bit...

Thanks Plec really appreciate it.

Thinking of heading in that direction if I can't get it working still tomorrow. Once the new rig would be all set up I'd probably have forgotten about this whole fiasco and very excited that I have a shiny new toy in the Ryzen 1600. We will see anyway.

That's pretty much right there what I was looking at, didn't we decide it would be better getting the GIGABYTE B350 though? Not sure what sort of re sale value I'd get from my 7970 and 8GB of RAM, not very much at all I expect.

I'm serious when I say I, personally, would be buying the 1600 over the 1700.

It would be a waste - and I love doing builds for biggest bang for buck. The 1600 with 6 cores and 12 threads is amazing performance to price ratio - look at reviews - and it will increase in infamy as games become optimised for Ryzen more and more.

The memory you picked would not run at 3200 - very few do - and the one I selected I just hoped you like the look of as well as being compatible and cheap.

Yeah I don't do any editing and stuff so you're right that the 1700 would be a waste. The reviews I've seen for Ryzen as well have reported very smooth gameplay so that is what got me excited! A 1600 coupled with my new 1070 should be quite great. I did forget to say that on one of the Power Supply cables the netting round one of the cables is ever so slightly frayed, noticed that the other day. Dunno if that's something to keep any eye on.
