Speed of the card and RAM are more important than arbitrary amounts of RAM. The X1600 is 2 year old technology, the 8600M is today's - it should knock the heck out of the x1600..

Apple are quoting over 50% faster in Doom 3 and Quake 4 with the 8600.

OK, I'm convinced. For £200 or so more than the black 2GB Macbook I was previously thinking of getting, the entry-level MBP with its larger screen and 3D support is somewhat more competitive. I've just ordered one :)

really would love an upgrade myself but not sure that i can justify it! I bought 15" model around 5 months ago. Is it just me or are these models quite a bit cheaper than the previous revisions?

Does anyone actually play games on their Mac here? I think the only thing I have ever done on this Macbook Pro that touched the GFX 3D support was that Second Life game for about 5minutes.

I paid £1800 for mine in April 2006 - was the top spec 15" at the time - 2.0Ghz Core Duo, 1GB Mem, 100gb HDD, 256mb x1600

I feel conned :) - such is life in electronics though.

As I recall, the previous entry-level MBP was £1350 with a slightly slower CPU (2.16GHz?), 1GB RAM, X1600 graphics and an 80GB HDD (I think?). Considering I was wanting 2GB anyway the new one at £1300 is relatively good, I thought. Not sure about the other models, sorry.

I'm happy to keep mine as it does all I want it to do but i always like having the latest! I wonder are more updates planned to coincide with the release of Leopard??

Same here - mine is perfectly adequate for what I use it for at the moment. Naturally the new bits and bobs the new ones have are so tempting.

The FW800 port built in is nice - but I have gotten round that with an ExpressCard34 FW800 card - and the ability to slap 4GB of memory in them is nice.

how much will a second hand 2.33ghz 15" 2gb ram gget on auction you reckon? tempted by these new ones now :(

£400+ for 4GB RIP !
Can get 2GB single sticks for £100 !

Just had an email.. apparently the 160GB 7200rpm hard drive is in short supply.. they've updated my order as "4-6 weeks!"

Just ordering a base 15" (2.4Ghz) :) want to up the HDD but I'm not waiting 4-6 weeks :O

Edit: and a griffin elevator, apple wired mighty mouse and keyboard and a neoprene case.

Yeah I will, although doesn't it void the warranty?
Don't think it does.. although if you break something while doing it then it will.

You could always order one, buy the drive seperate and have an apple store shove the drive in for you (while you wait)
