New Man Utd Manager Search

Exciting to see what happens here...

You'll all be posting here in a year or two about his replacement and how he'll need time to do a big clearout after another round or two of vanity signings and no actual progression because nothing behind the scenes actually changes :p

I'm really hopeful that he is given the time to develop/clear out/sort the team, before being hung out to dry. There will be people expecting immediate results but it's going to take many years to get anywhere near competitive.

Do any of you think Donny VDB will feature under ETH?

You have to assume he would and like Shami says, we have so many players leaving that ETH will have to choose who he replaces and who he makes do with and VdB is a player he has worked with successfully in the past.

Another utterly baffling signing from the club. Its like they look at players and say "hes good in that team that plays the polar opposite to our style of football, lets buy him". Same for Sancho.

It needs pretty much the entire squad to be gutted. The whole place needs an entire culture reset.

I would keep.

DDG
Lindelof
Varane
Phil Jones
Mctominay
Fernandes
Sancho
Ronaldo (Purely for his work ethic)
Fred
Luke Shaw
Telles

Get rid. Rashford, Martial, Pogba, Lingard, Wan Bisaka, Maguire, Mata, Cavani, Dalot.

Rashford and maybe AWB have a chance to stay but it all depends whether they can be bothered to fight for it.

You also have the Greenwood situation. We really missed him this season it has to be said. I think he will be back however as horrible as it was money talks and football is football. Suarez was a blatant cheat and racist but he still played.

Anyone who would keep Phil Jones is no friend of mine.

And if you go by performances why would you keep Sancho?

What has he shown that other players haven't? Any brilliance or hunger or work ethic? I didn't see any of them in any of the games he featured.

So apart from 'give him game' and the chancer logic I don't see what he added.

People are also omitting mr Henderson from the lists. That's a future GK or £30m right there.

If Jones was playing regularly or even semi-regularly I'd agree but for the wages he's on, his injury proneness and the literally handful of games he's played in the last few years I don't think keeping Jones makes sense. Players on Jones' wages need to be playing regularly and at a decent level to justify being kept on. For years we seem to have given contract extensions to players for no other obvious reason but to maintain our ability to get a fee of some kind for them later on. Hasn't really worked with Lingard though has it? Trying to maintain a possible future fee for players won't work if we pay them such a high salary that no other club will even think about paying a similar wage. We end up earning 0% of a bigger potential fee and pay out 100% of a smaller amount so lose out in the long run.

I can't argue with any of your Get rid list. I don't think Maguire is that bad but the situation he's in now I can't see improving any time soon. At the very least he ought to be stripped of the captaincy and made the backup DC with either DDG or Ronaldo being captain. What do you think about Andreas Pereira and Tuanzebe? I don't think they've done enough either at Utd or on loan to justify their places. Might be better for Pereira to go back to Brazil permanently?

If AWB goes I'm not sure I see Dalot leaving at the same time. I would say for his transfer fee and wages AWB should go first. I'm not saying Dalot is better but I think there's some potential there and he's got lower wages and a smaller transfer fee to have to justify. I think the likes of Hannibal, Fernandez, Garner, Pellestri, Mengi, Elanga and Shortire could become part of the first team more permanently and be backups to the established players.

I've noticed you haven't listed Bailly as either stay or go? I think sell him and put some time and effort into Mengi. I'd keep Rashford for one more season to see if a good pre-season and a new manager can help him get back to some kind of form. I did read somewhere last night that there was a prospect Pogba might sign a new contract with Utd as it was likely no-one would pay his demanded wages. I'm sure the likes of PSG and RM would happily/easily pay this. If we do end up keeping Pogba because no-one else agrees to his wage demands then he's got to sign a much lower wage for us according to his current form.

Matic's departure, although expected to be instigated by the club and not the player, has made a midfield signing 200% essential now if Pogba also leaves. It'd be nice to have Donny back and see if re-uniting with ETH helps. Matic wasn't really worth the £40m we paid and I don't think he's done enough since joining to justify that fee in any way. If a large number of the expected to leave players do actually leave the wage budget will have a lot of room for new signings!

Also no mention of the 30m wunderkind Diallo.

Who is so special he can't get a game in the b league
I knew I forgot someone! Yes if we keep DDG (and I think we should even though he's on a massive salary) I think we should do the decent thing and let Henderson go. I'm not convinced he's Utd 1st team quality and really he's at the age to want/need to be a first team GK somewhere and play week in week out.

Diallo seems to have gone missing somehow. He's barely starting for Rangers so if he can't get a start for one of the title chasing teams in the Scottish PL I can't see why he'd have a chance at Utd.

And isn't Grant leaving too? Contract expiring and not being renewed rather than being transferred?

The reason I picked Phil Jones is the same reason that players like John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher etc all played for Manchester United. He has the right work ethic and passion of a United player. He is also one of the remaining few who has actually won a league title. Looking back at his blunders as a defender over the past ten years pales in comparison to what Maguire has achieved in the past 18 months.

Sancho is a system player and the perfect kind of player for ETH.

If we keep DDG we really really need to look at reducing his wages to a more sensible level. He shouldn't be on more than £200k/week. Very good shot stopper and under previous United teams he was vital because we needed to stop so many shots but for any top teams now, a sweeper keeper and one that plays as part of the back line is vital.

He is one of the only players that has come out of the last few years with any good will from me. When we lose badly, hes the guy that takes the interviews and answers the hard questions. Feel sorry for the guy. £375k/week is nuts though.

Might as well play Henderson till the end of the season now

We know what ddg can do. Give the boy a chance and make a decision at the end of the season.

Henderson has had a few chances and every time he's looked a bit dodgy I thought.

Sancho will be a great player, he's walked into a woefully underperforming squad and has struggled like everyone else. Ronaldo has done OK goals-wise but he's Ronaldo.

18 months ago Bruno looked on KDB's level and has suddenly turned to garbage.

I think there will be 6-8 new players in, and hopefully 10~ outgoings. Rangnick will know who the lazy useless players are and Ten Hag won't want to work with them.

Reminds me massively of Pickford. Compensates for a lack of talent with shouting at everyone when the ball comes within 30 yards of his goal. Decent keeper but not on the same level as DDG as a shot stopper and the rest of his game isn't much better. Honestly, if we could get a decent fee for DDG I would sell him in a second because I don't think he is ultimately what modern football teams prioritise in a keeper and his wages are crazy. No one will pay for him or match his current salary though so we are stuck with him.

Agreed. Sancho will come good if ETH can get a tune out of this team. Both Sancho and VdB are system players and were brought into a chaotic mess and told to crack on.

Think you might be getting a bit carried away there but he has fallen off a bit of a cliff. I'm still not 100% sure how good he will be in a more prescriptive style of play as the reason he excelled so much for us was that he was making high risk, high reward plays a lot which was great in a team that was full of energy and running in players like Rashford but obviously isn't great for a team that wants more possession and control. He will certainly work hard enough for ETH however so I have hope he will adapt. Perhaps he won't feel the need to create so much from nothing if the team is functioning properly as a whole.

I would be surprised to see more than 4-5 coming in this summer unless we actually make some money from outgoings. 9-10 will be leaving for sure but most of them for nothing.

Agreed. £375k a week is crazy but as you say he's been a stand out performer for us over the last few years which, considering he's a GK, is crazy. Isn't he meant to be quite a shy person who doesn't want to do interviews but accepts he has to as he's now a senior member of the team having been at Utd for 11 years now? That makes me respect his doing interviews more, especially when it's after a big defeat or bad performance. The captain ought to be doing those kind of interviews. Wear the armband, fulfil the duties and roles that come with it!

I know we're miles away from getting 4th but surely it's worth playing our best keeper to give us the best chance of getting 4th?

If Henderson had the ability to be our 1st choice keeper surely he'd have ousted DDG by now? 2 or 3 years ago people could say he wasn't at the right age yet but surely he is now.

Thats the silly thing though, outside of the top 2 the rest of the pack is erratic and even now United could easily have got top 4 if they had strung together a few more wins over the past couple of months. Next season I don't think top 4 should be unachievable with a bit of luck.

He wasn't able to oust DDG even when DDG was having a bit of a rough patch so I think Henderson is destined to be number 2 unless he can really outshine DDG in the other aspects of keeping. He hasn't shown fantastic distribution, ability to aid the defence or command the box to an elite level yet...

That Arsenal win against Chelsea didn't help our cause. 3 points and a game clear of us.

Exactly. DDG is a proven known quantity. Henderson hasn't shown he's got what it takes to be Utd's first choice GK. I'm sure he's good enough to be No1 at a mid table club but doubt he's got what it takes to be Utd's. We really shouldn't have let Sergio Romero go.
