New Star Trek series - 2017

Michael Burnham is a classic Mary Sue.

Literally can do no wrong, all the other characters are always wrong until Mary Sue Burnham sets them right. Even when she is punished she gets forgiven in the very next episode.

Terrible writing, terrible cast, way too much politics in the show. I would be surprised if it makes it past the first season
A second season is all but confirmed.

She started an Intergalatic war, how is she a Mary Sue??

Someone else said the same thing about Rey in Star Wars. Load of rubbish. Lots of people seem obsessed by this now.

May well have been me, and I stick by it but it's just my opinion.

Considering the Term "Mary Sue" has it's origins in a Star Trek Fan fiction story, in my opinion it's a pretty spot on comparison which I tend to agree with.

But take heart... just in case you were thinking this is just an Anti-Female thing, there are plenty of "Gary Stu's" (male counterpart to Mary Sue) out there as well which I would gladly call out, Batman for example in my opinion is the biggest Gary Stu ever.

I don't know how you can ignore that it is in the prime timeline and is set in the same universe as Tos when it keeps getting brought up by the production that it is. See this

If (and frankly I think it's a massive IF) they explain everything and align with the Prime timelines (and I rate it as being as likely as explaining the polar bear and Walt in LOST) then I will re-think it. At the moment, there is just too much that doesn't align to make any sort of sense. I mean:
  • The Klingons somehow get physically altered on a species-wide basis (once was funny (Worf's little joke) but twice just makes the seem like the most DNA-malleable race ever to exist),
  • Starfleet forgets it's little play with Discovery class vehicles, spore drives and the entire fact of the fungal layers to the universe
  • The sudden, glaring regression of technology to TOS levels
  • etc.
As such, I'm exercising my own rights to view this as a completely different entity from Prime timeline ST. Although, I will admit that at least they haven't screwed it all up like the Kelvin-verse, where nobody needs to die anymore due to Khan's miracle blood and the entirety of Starfleet is redundant due to transwarp beaming.

Someone disagreeing on OCUK, check user name. Figures!!

LOL what? I don't have a rep for disagreeing with people... do I? I hardly ever post! lol

And even if I do disagree I always respect others opinions on maters and don't go on a rant, what's wrong with that?

Started an intergalactic war, got punished for it. NEXT EPISODE got rescued, all is forgiven. Don't think you understand what a Mary Sue is

All is forgiven? She's been illegally hired with no rank by a dodgy Ships Captain, all the crew are very wary of her, other than ginger lady.

I think you are seeing things that aren't there.

biggest thing that disappoints me about this series is its clearly built around 1 character instead of developing an ensemble cast. For that to work your 1 character has to be pretty epic... Michael....is not...

I do hope by season 2 they start building other characters up. I also would not like whole show to be based on/around her.

Excellent. It may not be as good as expected, but more is always welcomed by me :)

I really like it.
Yeah is a bit of a shame about one character focusing at the moment but I'm still very happy with it compared to what might have been produced.
Lots of bad points but for me doesn't stop it being awesome to watch.
Wondering what happens to this drive, guess something will go wrong as obviously it would make federation overpowered etc

Im not to bothered about if it fits in etc. If rather it be entertaining. Which it is.

Tried the expanse. Didn't like it. Find this is much better.

Enjoyed the fourth episode but the subtitle reading is starting to get to me. Pretty cool concept so far, I didn't watch much previous Star Trek so don't really have a gauge of how it stacks up overall. Cool nonetheless!

I can't get over this spore drive thing. Their shiny new starship propulsion system is a giant water bear communing with some magic space mushrooms. I mean, I kind of love the absurdity of it, and if it were in a Rick and Morty episode, I'd probably applaud the creativity of it. But it seems out of place in a show that has "Star Trek" in the title.

I suppose spore drive won't last long as it's not in the other series which take place (chronologically) after STD.

I’m actually really enjoying it, think it’s a very good show.

As for the Spore drive, perhaps they developed it but later down the line there were problems or accidents and it cost many lives, so it was discontinued in favour of regular warp drive. A bit like the way we developed supersonic Concorde but have consigned it to history in favour of slower regular aircraft.

Watched 3 last night, fell asleep on ep4, will try again tonight..

Given that the Discovery is captained by someone who has been given pretty much free-range by Star Fleet to do what he needs to do to win the war, his crew is pretty weak given....

I cant see this lasting more than 3 seasons unless theres some decent change in the team behind it..
